Category: Link Building

Chat through link building best practices and outreach techniques.

  • Actually, one aspect that we forgot to mention was that the real link value is not from the press release. The real value is if any of the online blogs or newspapers picks up the story and runs it, hopefully with a link. http://www.prweb.com/ is said to reach many "real" writers. Have not used it myself though. If you use it, please share your experiences. Fredrik

  • Hi, It's good to place links where the reads can benefit. It is not good to place links to manipulate the search engine. Having EMA (Exact Match Anchor) multiple times on a blog post clearly looks like an over optimization attempt. 1.  Should i stop adding so many blog articles to each site? You can add as much content to your blog as you want. However, it must be good/entertaining/educational content. 2.  How many interlinking anchor texts should I use per blog? There is no real number for that, placing a link to another resource should be done for the user not the spider. 3.  Should I go back and either get rid of all those interlinks on past blogs or just trash the blog articles altogether? I would remove all the links that do not help the readers or change some of the links so that they do help the reader.

  • Hi David, Any update for us? I'm looking to outsource as well since time is just not worth it to most clients, or they are just reluctant.

  • That didn't auto-update, but we're working on getting the date updated. The data is good.

  • OSE sometimes take a while to show links. But at the end of the day it is just a text on a screen. Go to Google and search and see if your listing is found, if it is found, and the link the followed, you are getting juice from them...which is all that matters. Usually takes 1-2 updates for them to show up but I've heard longer. I just don't think people should be too worried if it is not on OSE. It is usually just to gauge where you are.

  • Thanks dohertyf. I do get your point, but this isn’t the site I’m talking about and I have never had any warnings for this site. The site that I am referring to does have a few crappy directory links pointing at it from years back and certainly nowhere near the amount I see pointing back to competing sites. And if these links were a problem why didn’t I get the notice earlier? It seems a big coincidence that I got the warning immediately after I submitted to these new directories.

  • Optimize your STORE. Optimize store category pages. It's tricky but if you experiment you can take control of the title tags. Use your "about me" page to link to your websites.

  • I also agree. I had a boss a few years back that demanded that I do this. I had to keep a spreadsheet of all of the posts, what I said, and the link I used. I fought tooth and nail against it, but I had to. I left a short time later. But on a side note, that is how I found SEOmoz and  other awesome blogs.

  • One thing to remember is that even if you change nothing about your site (on-site or off-site), your competitors are still working and changing things. If keep everything the same, your competitors could still be out there working harder, and there goes your rank.

  • Thanks for the insight guys. I think I am resigned to the fact that doing this white hat is going to be a bit of a slow burner. It will be an interesting one to see grow though as the site is more or less a blank canvass in terms of link profile. Trying to figure out a good strategy to beat the spam sites  (and occasional authentic site) will be a good challenge.

  • This is an example of how google will change their mind without tellin' When nofollow first came out Matt Cutts said that it could be used to "sculpt" pagerank.  Some people started to use it that way.  Then,  years later, Google said that they had changed their mind about this quite a while ago and that they had been evaporating the pagerank flowing into nofollow links. So, just because you hear google say something today.  Don't count on that working tomorrow. Bottom line, do stuff because you think it will be GOOD FOR THE VISITORS ON YOUR WEBSITE. Lots of the links that people have built in the past have negative value today.... lots of the crap content that people created in the past has negative value today...     Those folks should have been building things that are good for their visitors instead of building contraptions to fool google.   You might fool google today but down the road it will hit you in the ass.

  • Sure, Ontolo does this fairly well with data from OpenSiteExplorer. It is also possible to do it with excel &vlookups, this will probably be the only option that won't cost you more $$. The domain comparison is an often overlooked little trick, even SEO Elite included this comparison view back when we were all pulling links from Yahoo's index. If you run the clique hunter in MajesticSEO, you'll even get a pretty little bubble chart though

  • like the 404 idea I will try that one. Not done any work yet trying to get them on as a client.  But I want to be sure we can 100% help, no point taking the project if its not going to improve much for them. Any one else got any experience with this please chip in.  Surely there must be loads of people who cannot get links removed, they can't all lose there online business due to this.

  • Never heard of it. However the best method to find out if it works is to actually implement it and try it. Once you have implemented it you can view your site in a SEO browser like lynx, basically it kind of gives you an idea what the crawler sees when they crawl your site or page... Now keep in mind these SEO browsers are not as advanced as Google's crawlers but it can give you a general idea...

  • Hello, So when building links, I should not worry about backlinks to inner pages, and try to concentrate on building to my category & homepage? Also Is it typical for a homepage to have the majority of links? Or should it be spread as evenly as possible? Thanks!
