  • My favorite for yesterday came from Barry Scwartz: https://www.seroundtable.com/google-search-quality-lead-april-fools-20084.html I was crying out loud while reading this.

  • Ryan is correct, if you cannot see the text in the source code of a page, then the robots cannot see them either. There are not many widgets or plugins out there that are actually fully integrated.

  • Hi Daren. It's hard to say without going into the details specific to the site, but in general it shouldn't hurt it. There probably aren't a lot of inbound links to the helpdesk and that area probably doesn't serve as a main landing page from the search engines either. If you NOINDEX / FOLLOW that section you'll be able to keep those pages out of the SE and still allow the on page links to be measured. Be sure to check Analytics to verify what kind of traffic you're getting from organic visitors and run the site through OSE and GWT to see if for some reason the helpdesk is getting a high number of links. In the rare case it is, it'd probably be better to redirect those portions to a public facing FAQ, or a few other pages topically dedicated to the content that you're deciding to remove from the search engines.  Cheers!

  • You have two options, completely rewrite or update. If you completely rewrite the old post, then retire and redirect it. If you update the existing post, include content at the top of the post that explains what you've done, when you did it, and why. Republish. Don't just copy and paste the old blog post, edit it slightly, and publish as a new one. You'll end up competing with yourself for rankings and confusing your audience.

  • Well, now I realise whats going on. Mainly the posts on the soccer blog are news related to recent football matches. Probably the site was appearing in the news section of Google... soon I will start again to work on him and I can post updates if anyone is interested ... So I guess , if I start to add High PA & DA authority links ( instead of weak forum profiles) + fresh content, soon the site is going to have massive traffic. Seems that related links, + fresh content rocks

  • Ah. As outlined above by EGOL the separate subscription model should do well. Plus you'll be keeping inbound links within the blog as a whole so that should help with gains.

  • If the PDF is available in other places, then it could be considered duplicate content. If you want to prevent that then no index the PDF. Unless the PDF is something you want to rank for.

  • The answer is easy, just do it when you think such link will provide profitable information to the users

  • Thanks for the shout out, Ryan! Although, I think Smashing Magazine has already answered this question the best: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2014/07/22/responsive-web-design-should-not-be-your-only-mobile-strategy/ Basically, what you want to do is load high quality images for desktop, but remove those images or serve lower quality images for mobile. You can either do this by loading the images you need with JavaScript rather than CSS, so matchMedia can change the images based on device type, or you can set up your server to deliver differently sized images based on device type. Hope this helps!

  • Hi Kaitlin, Consider this perspective regarding your duplicate content, especially seeing as your content and keywords seem to be geo-targeted to different areas. For this example, let's use a keyword like 'air conditioning repair Houston' Let's say that you've written the best 1000+ word page on the internet about the keyword 'air conditioning repairs Houston' and Google have ranked that article/page in the top 3 results. They ranked it because it was highly informative and well written. Now let's say you just swapped the word 'Houston' to 'California'. Would that article technically still be the best information on the internet about 'air conditioning repairs California'? Well, unless someone has written one better in California, I believe it would be. All Google cares about is showing the best information in relation to the search query. They couldn't care less if it's duplicate. That's a problem for site owners to bicker over if someone else is using someone's content. As far as Google is concerned, that article is still the best article on the internet about 'air conditioning repairs California', which is why they'll allow it to rank first. They don't care that there's another 99.9% similar article about 'air conditioning repairs Houston', as that's a different keyword, and the searcher is searching for different information. Even as an internet user yourself, do you care that the amazing information you're reading is available in another state? As long as your query is answered with the best information possible then who would really care. All of the top high authority news and entertainment sites circulate duplicate content all day long. The duplicate content penalty is for pages on your domain only. If you have multiple pages under a single domain that have duplicate content, that's where the misunderstood duplicate content penalty applies. It doesn't apply if you use the same content on a different domain. You might not rank as well using duplicate content on a different domain, but you definitely won't get penalised for it. I've tried and tested duplicate sites a few times, exact same words, images, themes etc. Although the niches weren't that strong, the complete duplicate site was soon ranking in 1st place for all of the same keywords as the original duplicate site, just in a different area. That's because the content answered the searcher's query the best. All that changed was the location, but Google still considered it to be the best content on the net about that particular keyword. Here's another example, let's say you published a great article 10 days ago about a generic keyword. Let's assume my site is a DA60+ and PR5 and your site is a DA10 and PR-N/A. And now I publish the same article on my site, who do you think will rank better. In the worst case scenario, I would rank second, but more than likely I would rank 1st. My point being, that even though it's copied 100%, I'll still rank with it.

  • I would argue against Fiverr, not just on the grounds that it cheapens the landscape, but mostly due to the quality.  I tried using it multiple times from semi-technical and click bait style articles and every time the quality was poor to the point that editing them took more time and effort then just writing them would have been. I agree with Alberto about Odesk.com, it is a great resource to find freelance writers with.

  • Moz itself has several excellent examples of curated content ranking on the first page for medium and higher level competition keywords such as: On-Page Factors: http://moz.com/learn/seo/on-page-factors Search Engine Ranking Factors: http://moz.com/search-ranking-factors Local Search Ranking Factors: http://moz.com/local-search-ranking-factors and more... Are you wondering about techniques surrounding these rankings or more so looking for people familiar with them?  Cyrus Shepard, goes over how and when the above content was published and maintained in his most recent mozinar: http://moz.com/webinars/seo-basics-the-fundamental-signals-used-to-rank-our-content-higher.  All very insightful if it's just information that you're looking for. Cheers!

  • The only reason why I'd ever disable comments if I'm way to tired of getting them and having to approve them or I decided to stop replying to comments. I'll tell you why. Your page is ranking well for many reasons. One of the reason is likely due to that its a great piece of content. If it still continues to rank well and drive sales, then the 10+ comments per day obviously aren't harming its ability to do that, so why change the process of accepting comments? In addition, if it is a great piece of content, people are more likely to share it and you'll get more visits. I've seen many blogs where they closed comments because it was already a year or two old and it just seems they don't want to bother with the comments anymore and I really want to provide additional insight and yadda yadda; my comments are not going to hurt your post especially if it adds more unique and fresh content to that page only to help it stay fresh in Google's eyes, right? Unless you switch the position of your content and the comments around, the comments will have little effect on your page's rank and conversion rate. If you're happy with the way things are, let the comments keep coming. Use your spam filter, make sure you have "external nofollows" on comment URLs and if you really want to keep the value of your content strong, only approve the really good comments, not just the five word comments like, "wow, what a great post". Good engagement, you are correct. Fresh & unique content, Google likes. More social signals; a good thing.
