I have quite a few legal clients and 90% of my clients top competitors are doing 1:1 link exchanges and they have been doing it for years. Other industries Dont seem as prevalent.

I am just boggled every time someone says link exchanges don't work, will get penalized, or value is not passed. Its been working for my competitors....Legal SEO's seem to focus heavily on link exchanges.

I have yet to do link exchanges, but am about to get started with a resourceful directory of local businesses on my clients site. Some will be linking back, but not all. Fear of penalization is lurking in my mind.

Does anyone have any real data on this? Does anyone have an example of doing this properly and an example of how not to do it?

Thanks for your feedback everyone. The business owner is going to communicate directly with the reporter since they met while the video was taken.

Thanks much, i guess ill take a look at their other articles and see if they link to other businesses.

A customer of mine had a new channel come to their place of business today in regards to valentines day (they are florists). They shot a video and wrote an article. Only problem is they only mentioned the business name and no link to the website. Has anyone had experience with reaching out to reporters and asking for a link in this type of a situation. Is a telephone call or email better?

I am using whitespark and brightlocal to run citation checks for my clients. I was curious if there was a good tool to compare competitor citations + other local metrics easily without paying per report.

We have submitted allot of citations over the last 60 days for a client. A very prominent business in their city. Pretty good SEO rankings considering we just started doing SEO a couple months ago.

Over the last several weeks we have fixed all listings and removed duplicates. Site is optimized properly and etc..

After how many weeks should I see a change in places rankings? Right now they are not moving up at all.

I have a subscription at both SEOMOZ & Raventools.

Read up on raven and you will see why, especially when it comes to managing many many keywords and staying on top of reporting.

Joomla can be a pain in the arssssss if you do not have a good team of developers who understand it and its work around.

If wordpress can do the job id stick with wordpress. If you see functionality which joomla can handle and wordpress cannot, then you know my next suggestion.

In the future if you do not need major functionality and just a basic site for SEO & PPC purposes I would use modx. Its very easy to use and developers love it. SEO functionality is built in.

There is a high possibility that your competition might be ranking higher due to higher quality links which were just picked up by googles algo. I would create a excel spreadsheet and list your top competitors (for your top keyword) and look at the seomoz metrics + number of links from unique domains. I would also review their back links, you might be able to duplicate.

In regards to penalizing websites, I really have not experienced that and over the last several years I have done everything from outsourcing to "thank you sir" team over in India to mass directory submissions. This stuff either did not work or worked temporarily.

From what i had seen this was the only way to automatically put updated news on our website from the .gov website. My thinker went on and i realized I can embed RSS feeds into the site without having to link out but once.
