I find that people fancy these technical terms too much, you just need to follow the right approach to reach out to your target audience and a strategy to engage them. My apologies for the delayed response, google is considering your mobile version as the primary version of the website, since it doesn't project the two version of the website.

I would suggest getting your website URL structure reviewed from a SEO professional, along with a detailed SEO audit as there can be other aspects which might  be impacting SEO of your website.

I recently reviewed and provided a solution to a website with a similar issue on Moz Q&A. They had a DIV element with name description, which was being pulled as meta description.

Or check if there is some HTML tag that is not closed properly.

You have not configured the WordPress website the right way for SEO. Read the problem for SEO first.

Q: What is a canonical url? Do you have to use such a weird word, anyway?
A: Sorry that it’s a strange word; that’s what we call it around Google. Canonicalization is the process of picking the best url when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages. For example, most people would consider these the same urls:

• www.example.com
• example.com/
• www.example.com/index.html
• example.com/home.asp

But technically all of these urls are different. A web server could return completely different content for all the urls above. When Google “canonicalizes” a url, we try to pick the url that seems like the best representative from that set.

The solution

In order to redirect all requests for www.yourdomain.com to yourdomain.com, you should set the appropriate rewrite rule. This can be done by adding the following lines at the beginning of the .htaccess file in your public_html folder:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yourdomain.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://yourdomain.com/$1 [L,R=301]

Hi There ,

We had a similar situation with a client, who had used a separate website name for his company (with a DA 20) http://www.divvymaster.com/  and wanted to his website product separately on another website https://www.fairsplit.com/

We built the new website, 301 redirected all the old website right pages to their equivalent/ parallel pages on the new website.

As for the main domain, we used explanatory links with text to explain the migration to the user. This had following impact.

The old website divvymaster.com DA fell from 20 to 9. The new website authority is around 20 from 1 in 2.5 months.

We are getting traffic for almost all the ranked keywords from earlier website plus more visibility on search engines for new keywords for the new website. So, we consider that we were able to pass the authority of the website.

Having said that, we also did some good organic backlinking work for the new website. But I would recommend passing the authority to right pages with 301 and informing the users about the redirect on the right pages.

Hi There,

• Sub-domains are treated as a  separate entity now, and they don't add to SEO value of the main domain.
• Any links within the subdomain to the main domain are treated as external links.
• Since links are coming from an external domain but the same IP, this may be treated a low-quality backlink for the main domain, though people are divided over this but it can neutral to negative impact instead of being positive. As search engines would consider this as unnatural linking.
• Sub-Folders are treated as part of the domain and pass all the SEO value when connecting internally.

Subfolders are the way to go, but they're hard to do for a lot of organizations. Many CMS' (like Hubspot) make it quite challenging to host a Wordpress installation on a subfolder, but subdomains are pretty easy. Hence, when choosing where to host a blog or a separate content section, many folks go with the easier route rather than the one that requires a lot of technical effort and webdev/engineering time.

However, that doesn't mean that they're not losing out - I'd wager that all of those companies would see a bump if they moved their blogs to a subfolder of the same domain. We see this in example after example when sites invest in it, and you can see plenty of folks discussing their own experiences in the comments of the Moz post you linked to.

Here are some things you can try to get it working:

1. Make sure you are not in incognito mode
2. Un-install your MozBar plugin.
3. Un-install and re-install Chrome.
4. Turn off any additional plugins these could be interfering with MozBar
5. Check to see if the address bar is hiding the extension icons: http://www.screencast.com/t/7cLHKkOP
6. Disable any software firewall or security apps.
7. Clear all cache and cookie data related to moz.com
8. Re-install your MozBar plugin here.
9. Try again to Sign-in into your Moz account here and the MozBar.

Clearing your cache and cookies of all Moz related data is a very important step since we've recently required authentication for the toolbar to function properly.

Sending over the below information to help@moz.com would be a huge help in efforts on diagnosing the issue, so if the above steps don't work for you, can you please perform the following steps and send over this screenshot to moz?

I  check the google search, your robot.txt, XML sitemap(s). I feelThe problem is with the structure of the website and how you are presenting it to search engines.

You are telling search engines that there is multiple version of your website, google is not able to understand the correct structure (or in other words you have not structured URLs well for search engines to understand)

A couple of inputs for you looks like you indexing your checkout pages , I would 'noindex, nofollow' cart pages as they are just going to dilute your authority through those extra pages.

Hi Bill,

You are rightly worried about the change in category structure, the structure earlier looks better than new structure of category page URL (before it was website.com/product-category/product-sub-category will now be website.com/more generic category/product-category/new-subcategory/product-category ).

The idea of right page URL structure should be to keep the length of URL in control and also give show the right directory structure to the search engines. It seems with the new structure you can get lengthy URLs and also repeat lot of keywords within the URL.

Hi Matthew,

Our job as SEOs is to try and get authority for a website on keywords relevant to their niche. We do that by using related topics on blog, on-page SEO with right title, Headers, content on the pages etc.

We analyze the results on SERPs, organic keyword traffics in analytics etc., to understand whether our strategy is becoming successful and google is looking at us the way we are projecting ourselves.

In your situation, it seems accidentally you have got traffic and ranks for not so relevant keywords, google will look at your website as an authority website for keywords related to this off-topic page (since other pages are not ranked).

Hi There,

Yes, pages with less content and only images can hurt your site's SEO. Another problem with portfolio pages is that with the limited content, similar title and description, they might look as duplicate to search engines.

I have a client who had limited content on product pages, we had great success in SEO after adding a unique description to pages. Best to handle the situation is to use a portfolio main page with unique on-page content.

Hi Ana,

Please check this article for Wordpress optimisation guide here on the Moz blog.  It explains in detail problems with tags and the best practices to use them.  Usually, you want to noindex the tags on your WP site - keep them for navigation purposes if you want, but letting them be indexed can lead to duplicate content issues.

If you are already getting some traffic on Tag pages, you can 301 to them right pages.

Yes, Ranking on non-branded keywords would mean that google / search engines look at your website as an authority website, however , whether you would rank better than your competition on branded keywords would also depend on their own domain authority.
