I think that another factor that could reduce domain authority is if you add a significant number of additional pages to your site without earning a proportional number of new inbound links. This would dilute the authority across the domain.

Google will allocate a limited amount of resources for crawling your site and your site's "link juice" is a factor in this. Earning more links to your website is one of the best ways to help your site get more pages included in the index. Some of your pages may not have enough "link juice" flowing to them so Google may not consider them important enough to be included in their index. Other things you can do is submit an XML sitemap or improve the internal linking of your site.

Although the ideal path is to make each product page remarkable and worthy of generating links, itdepends on how much resources are available. I like the example of Woot who creates really humorous and entertaining product descriptions. You can also create original content like videos and photos instead of just using the boring manufacturer's descriptions and photos. I like how ThinkGeek encourages customers to post their own photos of them using their remarkable products. Creative ideas like that can make you stand out from the crowd and make your pages worthy of generating links.

Links outside your niche are still very beneficial. For example if you are a home remodeler and the local news site writes an article about you and links to your site, this will be a valuable link even though it is not from a home remodeling site.

There are many factors that determine the value of a link. Relevance is just one of the factors.

In terms of receiving quality backlinks there are a lot of things you can do. You could create a resource for the best restaurants in your local area and have a great badge designed on Elance. People love to put badges on their site that show they were recognized. Another idea is to offer to write a guest article on local blogs where you offer your advice for free. Guest posts almost always include a link back to your site in the bio paragraph. Another idea could be to interview local businesses that might link to you. People who you interview are more likely to link to you because they have a strong incentive to promote their interview. Be creative and think about creating an incentive strong enough to compel people to link to you.

SEOMoz updates their domain authority about every 4 weeks and just did a fresh crawl of the Web on November 2nd. If you improved your site and earned links since the last update, the domain authority should have improved.

It is perfectly fine to use the keyword Chevy on multiple pages because it is creating variations of the keyword phrase. For example if your home page focuses on the keyword phrase "Miami Chevy" and you also have a page that focuses on  "Miami Chevy Learning Center", that would count as different keyword phrases. Google will serve a different set of results if you type in "Miami Chevy" or "Miami Chevy Learning Center" so you will not be cannibalizing your search traffic significantly by using these different variations.

SEOMoz uses "SEO Software" on their homepage and "SEO Tools" on a different page. It is a best practice to focus on different variations of your top keyword phrases on different pages, but it is usually a bad idea to have two pages that both focus on the exact same phrase like "Miami Chevy Learning Center".

Article spinning pollutes the Internet with poor quality content. Google's mission is to organize the world's information. Why would Google reward sites that make their job more difficult? I would focus instead on a tactic like guest posting by creating content that people willingly publish and adds value to readers.

I think Open Site Explorer uses the Linkscape link index which is updated monthly. So it is very possible that the link was taken down or moved to a different page (common with blogs when the link falls off the homepage) since the last time Linkscape was updated.

Another tool I use to check links is SEOHeap which is free and you can quickly check whether a link is active by clicking a button next to the link data.

If your links are absolute and another site scrapes your content, those links are often embedded when they republish it. If you use relative links, those embedded links would not work and you wouldn't get credit for them.

Here is a relevant quote from Rob Ousbey from an SEOMoz post:

"I'd recommend absolute links in post/page/feed content in particular (so that any scraped content maintains the links back to you). For 'navigational' links, there's a variety of reasons why absolute links are still useful, such as making sure link juice flows to the canonical domain (eg: if you have a number of (sub/)domains that resolve to the same content)."

Interviewing bloggers or industry leaders, guest posting on quality sites, infographics, creating great resource pages, building relationships with siteowners, writing great articles, to name a few.

One way you could test if a link is passing juice is to set up a page that targets a long tail phrase (maybe 3-4 words) and check the ranking. Then get a link on the site to point to the page and see if the rank jumps higher. If there is a significant jump in rankings (like from #30 to #3 for example) it would suggest that the link still passes juice.

In the past I have emailed influencers in my industry (top bloggers) and let them know about the content and how it can help people. Since the content was great, several influencers tweeted it and their followers retweeted it. We ended up with over 100 tweets and several hundred visitors.

I like the idea of paid Stumbles because people on Stumbleupon are more likely to be social media users and will be more likely to shrare (via Justin Briggs SEOMoz webinar). I also recently heard on the Marketing Over Coffee podcast that Stumbleupon is now the #1 social media site in terms of referral traffic.

If your competitors are getting a lot of low quality links then you might be closer than you think to beating them in the rankings. A link from a high quality site like the New York Times is worth more than tons of low quality links.

Most blog comments are no-follow and pass zero link value (according to Google). Even the do-follow blog comments pass little value (although Matt Cutts has said that they do pass some PageRank).

One idea that could help you catch up fast is to create some remarkable content that gets a lot of links. An example of this is an infographic that goes viral. Publishing guest posts on high quality blogs is a great way to get relevant links on a regular basis. MyBlogGuest.com is a great resource for getting guest posts published.

There are many good reasons to have navigation links in the footer. For example, there might be lower priority pages on your site that are important enough that you still want to flow some link juice to them. Additionally, a homepage link to your HTML sitemap can be a good way to flatten your site architecture, but you usually don't want to put the sitemap link in the header navigation.
