When you think you are doing it right but the results are quite the opposite.
Hi Simon A couple of things I found... You have duplicate content issues: http://hygienefood.co.uk/ Both www. and non www. versions of the site work Both http and https versions of the site work I also found this site - is this yours or someone else? Reason being, this is the exact content that lives on your bee removal page. Your robots.txt is an accident waiting to happen - check out Moz's best practices I would also use Open Site Explorer and Majestic to take a look at your backlink profile It looks like random domains (some irrelevant and others stuffed with keywords) are redirecting to your site This could look potentially spammy I would take care of all duplicate content and technical issues first. Then, I would look at my backlink profile - what can be cleaned up? Removed? Disavowed? So on and so forth. Then I would look at my competitor's backlink profile. What is it about their content that other (RELEVANT) websites like and are linking to? Am I doing that on my site? What do I need to change? Hopefully this helps, if I find anything else I will let you know - this was just a quick skim.

The Fun Side Of The Island - Let me in!
Choose your clients carefully Simon especially the ones that don't pay you a lot of money. They are the ones that expect the most amount of work to be done for them and will be on you everyday demanding proof of work. Manage the client's expectations with results from day one. Good, clean SEO takes time and delivers long lasting results. It's all about the education and transparency with the clients. All the best.

.co.uk/index.html or just .co.uk - my on-page reports are different for both - why?
They are the same url with different addresses, I can tell you on my sites i add code to the htaccess file to redirect the /index to the actual home page url, this removes the fact that you have duplicate content as both pages are the same & stops both types being indexed, recommend you Google this problem to get the right code for your host server as they do differ. Hope this helps but might not be what you where looking for.

How much (%) of the content of a page is considered too much duplication?
I would not use a canonnical for your www v non www, use a 301 there is a tutorial there also to fix the index.html problem also, these tutorials are for micdrosoft iis server, if you have linux, you need to find the htaccess alternatives. I always go for the non www, as www is of no use, so why have it, but for you i would look at what your links point to.

This is a bit of a melon-twister - Anyone have any ideas?
Hello Simon, Can you fill me in on the factors that have led to you wanting to make your main pages free of geo-targeting? I ask this because, if your business serves local clientele and has a physical address and local phone number, Google is going to see you as most relevant to your city of location, making Bristol (or wherever you are located) an integral part of the SEO/Local SEO of your key pages. Secondary cities (for example, cities where you go to serve beyond your city of location) can have their own pages, but these will be secondary keywords and not your core terms which would be your services + your city of location. Am I missing something? It would help to understand why you want your content to be separate from your company's locale.
