Parent pages
Hi Richard, It sounds like the best way to answer your question would be to use an example and think about it from a user point of view. Let's say you own a hotel site with the following URL structure: www.example.com/hotels/london - (in your case this would be your www.example.com/venue/paris page) If I was a user and I now want to see all hotels, it would make sense that the page www.example.com/hotels/ would show me that. If it doesn't and I get redirected to a less important page I would find that strange. Forgetting Google for a minute it's also not good to put users through an internal redirect as it's slower and if users see the URL change it can confuse them. To summarize, I would remove the 301 redirect and create a category page as it's better for your users and can have a chance of ranking for a category keyword. I hope this helps, Craig

Hosting two websites
No Problem Richard - Glad I could help - as you say two sites is twice the work to manage and market so it dilutes your effort. Good luck with your new project

Cannot 301 redirect, alternatives?
Yeah, sorry, would get rid of the 1-to-1s (can't think of a work around just now). See if you can find out why they can't do it. If it is something like MX records then change those and put the 301 in normally. You could also put a meta refresh in to take customers to the new page; no real SEO value though.

Duplicate content issue with trailing / ?
Hi Nigel You only need to 301 one of the pages, 301 is indicating a permanent move, so in the case you outlined above, I would 301, A to B the decisions to use B was based soly off the value of the url you indicated. If for any reason you prefer the url's not use trailing slash then use A. It also would not hurt to add a canonical tag to B To be clear here, whether you use website.com/index.php/dog/walk or website.com/index.php/dog/walk/ Does not matter as far as SEO is concerned, I would make my decision based off of which url has the highest position in Google, and be consistent with this method throughout my site. Hope that helps,

Best way to host new product?
I'm not 100% sure how google treats subdomains these days, but normally i would think it would be best to use a folder within existing site to be able to profit from existing SERP.

Merged websites issue
Hi Ben & Robert Many thanks again. I have now found at least two more websites the big company has done this on ie ditched the original small company web pages and content for a copy of the Big company web pages content. In each case the small company sitemap.xml lists the big company pages BUT many of those are wrong URLS. I think I'll take my time on this.... Cheers Richard
