Hey, I agree. But this client has poured a lot of money down the SEO consulting plughole (not with us) and is just not keen to throw more money at this site that is seemingly just burned. I suggested second opinion a while back and he did try that and the other consultants (good guys that know their stuff) just hit a brick wall as well. It's a super odd one although we are trying to help and doing some experiments (pro bono) as I am sure there is something to learn and a good case study here somewhere.

Glad you figured it out. I honestly didn't think it would have been the canonicals. I'm a little surprised that the bots didn't just choose not to respect the suggestion as opposed to blanking your site from the index. Didn't think that was even a possibility from incorrect canonicals. Good to know for the future though in case anything like this comes up with anyone else's site.

Hey, I used copyscape to locate all the content and have suggested copyscape sentry going forward. The problem is for this site the scale of the copying, it seems to go back several years and is pretty widespread. Cheers! Marcus

My pleasure. I think it will really benefit the whole Q&A experience. The good guys like EGOL, Ryan and Alan that are answering all the time can focus on creating really strong answers for unique questions and the users looking for answers get visibility of the existing strong answers straight away. EGOL's point above was valid as well. The search for the Q&A itself is a bit weak and it could do with looking at other factors along with some weighting for good answers. The metrics to apply this weighting like the staff endorsements, good answer and thumbs are all there to make this possible, just needs a bit of back end wizadry. Cheers Marcus

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone! We're aware that there are old questions that tend to linger, and we're working on some solutions. Dunamis, why wouldn't an email work for you? I had thought an email might be one of the more effective ways of letting people know there had been answers to their questions, so I'd like to hear why it wouldn't work for some people. Some of the people who asked questions were in a trial membership, and are now basic members, so they can't mark something as answered. I am either marking those as answered, or a discussion question. I'm also leaving notes on questions asking people if this has answered their question, but not everyone is subscribed to their own questions by email, especially on the older questions. When Q&A first launched, it wasn't as active, so my hypothesis is that people didn't get a response right away and didn't sign up for email notifications, then just stopped checking for answers.

Hey, that's exactly my approach and it always forms part of a larger picture but good quality articles can help get traffic to and rank a new site so it factors in still for me. Cheers! Marcus
