Focus on your Google Plus page. There is a weird link on your page that looks like it should go to Googe Plus but it just 404s. That'd be a good place to start. Then when you do get to your G+ page you get some YouTube videos that are shared publicly but aren't viewable because you've set them to private.

Basically I stopped there but you need to work on optimizing your site and your local G+ page. If done correctly you will see positive results.

I don't know what to tell you. There really isn't a way to "outrank them using the same content." Your best bet is to just build more links or see if they can provide a shortened version of the write-ups with a "read more" link pointing to your page. The best thing would be for them to no-crawl those specific pages..

Yes, you probably could. Depending on many variables. DA, link number, frequency, etc.. But more likely you will notice your blog page rank for those terms.

Why not target those blogs for those keywords and try to rank the specific blog's page for your target? In this scenario, it is vital that your blog is housed on your subdomain and not on some other platform. I contend you should be doing this with your primary blog regardless. This way that blog page will rank for said keyword, and it will land on your domain which will then allow users to browse your site as needed.  Your domain picks up keyword ranking and the user finds what they want. Win - win.

Yeah Crusader is right on. I think the answer to your question, in a nutshell, is "no probably not and why would you want to?"

The thing is, the ranking for the unrelated page won't beat out the blog post where your link juice is originating from for multiple reasons, but mainly because it isn't as relevant. The blog post is more relevant. But it accomplishes what you want just the same. In the blog post, you explain why they need this CRM tool for fitness management and that's where your conversion takes place. The fitness management crowd isn't clicking your CRM link no matter where it's ranked, most likely. If they were searching for a CRM tool they would probably google "CRM tool." See?

So I think that you actually WANT your blog post to rank better and be the page the user lands on regardless. In this scenario, Google's functionality exists a certain way because they have figured out the best way to get the end user to their desired content. In this case, it will always view your blog post as more desirable content for that search string.

It's really quite simple:

Create your custom 404 page and put it wherever you'd like in your directory.

Go into your IIS settings and right click the domain in question, select properties.

There should be a tab that says "Custom Errors" or something of the sort. Click that tab.

In there is a error messaging option for 404 and it will allow you to set the path of where your custom 404 page goes.

Essentially, this will all be found in the properties of your site in IIS explorer.

Make sure you redirect your page with a 301 to avoid duplicate content. Right now you have two addresses (www.domain.com and www.domain.com/index.html) displaying the same content. These will both be indexed and should be redirected.

Also from a usability standpoint I feel like the images should be clickable... But there are a ton of these little nit-picky changes I'll leave to you

You might be kind of shooting yourself in the foot with the whole image name thing. You don't have alt tags or image names and that can affect your on-site optimization. However you won't rank for every product on one page anyway so in your case it might not matter terribly. Still I'd raise an eyebrow if it were my page..

Good chance either some or all of these things happened:

a.) your competitors had built links through black-hat seo firms

b.) you are a victim/beneficiary of the Google Honeymoon (keep building links/content and don't be sad if you disappear in a few days back down the SERPs. You can gain it back quickly!)

c.) your content was stronger and your keyword/on-site SEO work was done proper

Well the HTML site is redirecting to the flash site as far as I can tell. And the URLs are all goofed up and silly. Oof. You got your work cut out for you here, especially if the client is unwilling to change as you're describing.

Anyway because there is nothing but a Flash site here, Google is not crawling it and it's not being indexed from what I can tell. I grabbed a couple strings of text and ran a search for them and the site didn't show up. The homepage is indexed, but it will never appear in the desired SERPs as you already well know...

Your client would really hate me because I'd be trying to convince them to change their entire company name. I realize this is a localized business but there are 3 different "sweetlightstudio.com" websites that all look the same to me. Now I know there are cities at the end of each one but I guarantee you a large portion of potential customers get confused and end up on the wrong site and then say "wait I don't live in San Francisco what the heck is this" and leave.

No problem.

While it is good you have the canonical tag present, you should still redirect one to the other. The canonical tag will prevent any duplicate content issues with your site so at least you don't have to worry about that. But not redirecting can still have some unwanted effects on your page.

Basically it can split your PR/PA between two URLs. If somebody links to yourdomain.com and another somebody links to yourdomain.com/index.html these two links are now receiving juice separately. The canonical tag does not carry link juice. That is why you want to 301 the index.html page to your root domain. Your hosting provider should be able to do this easily for you, or go ahead and google it if you have your own server. (the process changes based on whether you're hosting via Apache servers or IIS servers.)

I would still focus on getting that redirected. It'll save you headaches in the future.

So I just 404'd an old page and changed it's URL and re-launched it last Tuesday. Today it has been indexed and is on page 3 for a fairly competitive keyword. That was much quicker than I expected.

Granted, I built a few links for this one last week and didn't let it just go without but I still find this relevant.

Also, I still feel like a few months back this would have happened by Thursday/Friday of last week.

Anyway that's my latest findings.

Yes exactly. Assuming you're on an Apache server, of course.

Just to clarify, I ran both URLs through Open Site Explorer and sure enough two different Page Authorities returned:

www.just-insulation.com has a PA of 32

www.just-insulation.com/index.html has a PA of 15

Showing that in fact your link juice is splitting there when ideally you will want it combined.

I'm confused by what exactly you're looking for here, but to make my answer totally general I'll say this:

I think that a "long-tail keyword" is one that reads more like a sentence than a phrase. For example, if I'm searching for how to change a tire on my ford focus I could type in

"changing tire ford focus"

or

"how to fix a flat tire on a ford focus"

...The first might be short-tail in this scenario whereas the second would be longer. The second won't get as many searches, sure. But I might find that this drives in an extra click or two and all I had to do was sneak this sentence into my article. E.G. "A lot of people ask me how to fix a flat tire on a Ford Focus." or something...

I personally think there are 1 in 100 exceptions to this rule that should have separate mobile sites (Motrin is a good example that Avinash brought up at Mozcon) but I don't think your carport friends need a separate mobile site.

Can't you just rename the image file or whatever is being hotlinked? Or move it to a different directory or something? Basically 404 it on them?

In addition to the anchor text problem stated already, you have clearly been building links in a black-hat manner. Basically, a back link profile like yours is exactly what the Google Web Spam Team is going after. Need an example? Okay.

This webpage houses a review of the hit movie District 9 by Neil Blomkamp. The director is irrelevant except for the fact that I enjoyed his work and am looking forward to his next movie. That previous sentence would have been relevant to the review and worth posting in the comments section. Your site, however, has posted a link about genitalia. This is black hat SEO at it's finest and what you will need to do is track down each and every one of these links and attempt to get them removed.

It will be no easy feat. There are tons of articles on this community documenting other folks' efforts to rid themselves of such penalties. Here's the basics:

1.) Identify poison links and organize all domains via spreadsheets
2.) Contact Webmasters and attempt to remove. BE POLITE and make it seem like you are helping them out as well. 
3.) Document Step 2 - Take Screenshots and Notes.
4.) Consider using Disavow ONLY AFTER you've tried multiple times to remove certain links.
5.) Submit a reconsideration request ONLY IF you've received a manual penalty. Otherwise just wait.

I wouldn't worry about this.

Maybe I misunderstood what is being hotlinked exactly.  Normally I think hotlinking refers to pulling a source file from your server as opposed to housing it on their own.. Typically done with images. So are you saying your primary domain is "hotlinked?" And do you mean just that there's a link to your domain?

Please elaborate and sorry if I'm confused.
