As we have a major Penguin update looming in the background, I am looking for expert advice on how to deal with professionals buying into link programs whether they are doing it deliberately or not. Our site provides detailed profile information on hundreds of 1000's of professionals and some professionals apparently believed that buying into link program will lift their profile in the SERPS.

About 10 professionals have paid shady link building companies to buy links to their profiles on our site. The biggest offender bought over 1,500 links to his profile. Aside from adding the known toxic links to our disavow file, what else can we do to avoid any link penalties?

I can think of three distinct options and would love to hear feedback especially based on actual experience.

Option 1. 404 the existing profile - "http://www.anysite.com/jones_smith" and create a new URL "http://www.anysite.com/jones_smith_1".

Option 2. Keep the existing URL and fully rely on the disavow file. Contact the professionals and kindly ask them to stop buying links and to contact their link building companies to remove the links.

Any other ideas?

I have used unique identifiers to create unique page title before but only because it's a huge site that required automation - it's not the most elegant way to add dynamic unique content (but it does insure it which is why it's a good technique for huge sites) and could reduce CTR.

the problem i see here more is that both title tags are competing for the same thing. if users are able to generate similar description resulting in duplicate title tags that is probably very rare and you can probably go in and edit the ones that are duplicates by changing one character.

It depends on the PR, age, amount of content, rankings and competition, and value of your domain name etc. Sometimes it's easier to move on and start fresh after a site has been nuked, and if you have on going issues like some automation still pushing out links to your site.

I think a simple site should always have a second version ready to launch under a different domain in case they get hit, so you can begin rebuilding right away.

also add classifications  to the URL parameters section in WMT and add canonical tags to all of your pages and this will help make sure Google doesn't index these duplicate pages

I would definitely not put in the root and would not put on a subdomain, also you need two SSL certs i think, one for each site.

Make sure the pages aren't blocked with meta robots noindex tag

Fetch as Google in WMT to request a full site recrawl.

Run brokenlinkcheck.com and see if their crawler is successfully crawling or if it's blocked.

Use the word FREE with an asterisk because sreaming frog is now limiting the free version to 500 pages. Xenu is better, even brokenlinkcheck.com lets you spider 3000 pages.

500 pages makes the tool practically worthless for any site of decent size.

You were penalized by Google, Bing and Yahoo do not penalize.

Your homepage is your highest PR page so you should 301 redirect it to the new homepage and users will get to your site without having to click.

I would definitely not use a .info - it's a bargain domain extension that was used by spammers.

Help him find a better .com also EMD power is getting devalued by Google so he might want to consider his name or hybrid between brand and keywords

Wow 40 million visitors a month is no joke and nothing to be taken lightly if not done right the loss of traffic could be huge.

The new site should be non indexable and you can redirect a percentage of traffic to the new site (beta.site.com) for server load testing reasons and once you determine it is stable you can move it over to the new site.

Are URLs and site structure etc remaining the same? I wouldn't change too much at once or you won't know what happened if something tanks.

We do this. It depends on the content of the transcript. If it's a person speaking about something it's going to flow naturally unlike a stuffed SEO paragraph. If it's related to the page it will help because of extra content and long tail keyword possibilities even if the main keyword isn't in the content.

Don't be concerned about keyword density as long as you are addressing the keywords on the main page content. It's real content for the user and the engines, also handicap friendly for the hearing impared.

Joomla can be SEO friendly, there are custom made CMS platforms, if your site is small you don't even need a CMS.

thanks, i'm going with a combination of two.

one seems to be decent and also intuition tells me it's good, and other one has no other sites currently well optimized for it, so it actually MIGHT bring more traffic than the better one because it's an easy win with less competition.
