One more question, Is this more question of on-page optimization, or amount and quality of link still can change rank position? Thanks.

It is a function of the volume.  I lost about 20% of my links that were industry specific.

I'd look at the source code to see if a robots noindex got added, or if there's a weird canonical tag in the source. If you can't share your URL publicly, consider using a private question credit -- the private questions are not indexed, and only viewable by staff and associates (and we're all under NDAs).

I can't remember where I saw the data, but the benefits of a link drop dramatically after the first few.  So, spending all that time building links to a secondary blog that will only give you good juice on probably two links seems a waste of time.  You would be better off buying a well established blog, drop a couple links to yourself, and continue to utilize it for its intended purpose. If it were me, I would put that quality content with the products themselves, and work on getting them ranked.  With a well designed page you should be able to convert these people for the phrases they searched.  If additional help is needed, link out to it from this page, and not as a separate blog.  It will benefit from the very relevant link on your own site, and you can continue to build links to it if its a popular search phrase.

Make sure you aren't over-optimizing (I tend in that direction sometimes and am trying to break the habit. ) and be sure to use the keywords naturally on the page near the photos.

One of my early mentors told me that he sees benefit about a month after the initial link is posted, and that the links seem to get stronger roughly 5-6 months in.  This seems to be true in my own analytics, though perhaps I'm reading into it a bit.  Some rough testing on my part seem to show that it takes about a month for a link to directly affect rankings though, certainly.
