Thanks for the tip. However, isn't it a bad idea to have a bunch of sketchy sites linking to you that are scraping content? Aren't those the types of links we should be actively avoiding?

It is common the B2B world to have 3rd parties host your whitepapers for added exposure. Is this a bad practice from an SEO point of view?

Is the expectation that the 3rd parties use rel=canonical tags? I doubt most of them do . . .

A wide variety. We've done some guest blogging, create new profiles on sites etc. HubSpot has been picking up on the new domains but not OSE for some reason.

I have been monitoring our backlink profile on Open Site for over a year now and despite getting a number of new domains linking to us they are not reflected in the tool.

Any thoughts on why this might be the case?

The number of linking domains also seems very low compared with other tools we use (i.e. HubSpot)

I suppose you could use Google's disavow links tool. Be careful with it but I'm not sure what else you can do in this situation.

It is certainly possible though fairly unlikely unless you are in a very competitive industry or have a mortal enemy for some reason.

Have you checked the new links? If they are all sketchy links then you should definitely look into it more.

Hubspot has a tool for keeping track of incoming link quality which is what I use. Presumably Moz has something similar.

Almost every week we have more than a two dozen keywords that will all suddenly increase in rank only to then decrease in rank right back to where they were the previous week. This happens constantly despite the fact that we are doing very little SEO-wise on a week-to-week basis.

But what's the harm in leaving it indexed? Surely Google sees millions and millions of duplicate content issues with Wordpress blogs - it must ignore them. The average blogger does not know about duplicate content issues so Google must be aware of this.

Also, if people are finding you via tags then obviously it is a problem to deindex them - a problem that may outweigh duplicate content issues even if Google does penalize duplicate content on Wordpress blogs.

I just posted a question on this topic but I find it hard to believe that Google would penalize duplicate content created through Wordpress tags considering it is in such widespread use and the average person would never think to fix the issue.

Also, be careful if your tags are generating traffic for you. We have several tags that rank well in Google so we wouldn't want to lose that traffic.

Would Google really discount duplicate content created by Wordpress tags? I find it hard to believe considering tags are on and indexed by default and the vast majority of users would not know to deindex them . . .

Can anyone think of any reasons why it would be a bad idea to use PowerPoint to create documents and then convert them to PDFs? Do you think this could cause any crawling issues for Google?

Is it very important to make sure most of the links pointing at your site are "follow" links? Is it problematic to post legitimate comments on blogs that include a link back to relevant content or posts on your site?

Our average link quality is artificially low because of these garbage sites linking to us. That's why I thought it might be a problem.

That warning message is certainly spooky. The thing is I don't see why you wouldn't want to use it if a bunch of sketchy sites are linking to you. Certainly those sites can't be helping with their abysmal quality scores and they are likely hurting. Anyways, I gave it a shot. Worst case scenario, I think I can just delete the file and Google will recognize the links again. At least, I hope so . . .

Have you looked into SurveyMonkey? I've been using it for the last 7 years - though not for anything extensive.

We frequently get random super-sketchy looking blogs linking to us with no author or contact information. I believe we are being targeted by a competitor setting up garbage links to us. I am hoping to use the Google disavow links tool to deal with this but is it:

• Safe to use or does it flag us as link spammers by using it

• Possible to use on an on-going basis for single links (as them come in, as opposed to a bunch of backlogged links)

Does mobile search differ primarily with things like localized results? Or is Google likely to actually switch up the rankings based on sites that are more mobile friendly?

If you have a site with responsive design, is Google likely to look upon you more favourably and dramatically change rankings?
