  • I will recommend that you take a look at the Moz Guide on this topic: http://moz.com/learn/seo/international-seo Google will differentiate content if it is served on a different domain in a different content. So a 1:1 relationship should in theory not create DC as long as it is not in the same language. However, I would take the time to make sure that the content is written properly in the right tongue and take into account local cultural aspects. Which method are you using? domain.com/fr/ fr.domain.com or domain.fr?

  • Sure, I haven't heard of read about any impact in terms of SEO. I do hope that the new browser from MS can keep up with the expectations! Just let IE die already You could also try stackoverflow.com and get a more technical aspect of the HTML5 tag and what it could mean in terms of structure and faster code.

  • Try ahrefs and majestic they have the most link data.  Webmaster tools doesn't provide all your link data and it's the same with moz, they have a smaller database of links (but have more and better features than ahrefs and majestic).

  • Thank you. The 301s have been put back. I did wonder if I needed to do anything at all! (I'm a great believer in leaving well alone - why poke a wasp's nest if you don't need to lol) Over the last month there has actually been a slight increase in organic traffic to the new website. My concern is that some pages seem to have been removed from the index. Also (which I didn't say above) that impressions have gone down - however this could be seasonal rather than anything sinister. Do you know of a tool that shows you which urls are in the index - aside from Google, I mean - something I can extract into a spreadsheet? Thank you for helping me again today

  • Even if the image is decorative, it is still describing the contents of the image to visually impaired users. Here's more from Google: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/114016?hl=en From Google: "The alt attribute is used to describe the contents of an image file. It's important for several reasons: It provides Google with useful information about the subject matter of the image. We use this information to help determine the best image to return for a user's query. Many people-for example, users with visual impairments, or people using screen readers or who have low-bandwidth connections—may not be able to see images on web pages. Descriptive alt text provides these users with important information." The image's decorative value is for the user to judge, it's about providing the full story and experience to all users not some.

  • Hi Kerry, Excellent answer from Patrick. I just want to add a bit to it. For local businesses, directories are very much still part of the picture. I, too, am curious about the nature of the directories your client is listed on. I'm assuming they are not major directories like HotFrog. Would these be niche directories, specific to your client's industry, or something along those lines? If so, do you sense that there is something fishy about the directories or the client's presence on them?

  • All in all, more pages would definitely increase your website's authority and provide strong signal about it's topic. So yea, it would better for seo, but only if those pages are valuable to the users - coz creating pages just for the sakes of it, would mean spamming.

  • If you could just show the 404 error and custom message on the original URL it would save you a redirect. Otherwise, that sounds like a good plan.

  • Actually you may think in building a Global page on Facebook. As you can read in the page I linked, with Global Pages: Each brand's Global Pages structure will include local Pages for specific markets (single- or multi-country regions) and a default Page for all other markets. More details on this new framework: One global brand identity. Users from all countries will see the same Page name (translated into their local language), fan count, and People Talking About This (PTAT). One URL. Brands can promote a single URL in all off-Facebook campaigns, and users will be automatically directed to the best version of the Page for them. Global insights. Admins of the main Page will see insights for all global users in one easy-to-view dashboard. The problem is that the requirement really are for strong global brands, as you can see in detail in this post. Honestly, I looked a lot into the Facebook Business pages and I was not able to see an explicit link for creating a global page. So, I consider right what some experts say that you have to contact Facebook directly via email. However, if your brand is global, but not with such a big budget so to afford a Global Brand Page, then the only solution is creating as many regional Brand pages as you need. This is very easy. Just create a page normally, but then indicate in the creation process the region your Page targets for each regional pages.
