  • I still think you should just shed the optimization for the homepage and optimize another url for that  keyword (let the homepage be un optimized or optimize it for something else).   I'm assuming that it's the current optimized URL (in this case, http://xxxxx.com)  that's taking the hit from google. The overall authority for the domain may still be strong, so optimize a different URL for your keyword and see what happens.

  • I have 301 redirects from my old URL to the new URL (and from http to https, and from no www to www) The link suggestion you provided just offered a link to a you-tube video that was instructive but did not help me. I found a link to https://support.google.com/legal/troubleshooter/1114905 which allowed me to "report content that you would like removed from Google's services". I submitted a request that the scrapper site be removed from Google's index.

  • I would have to see the website in order to tell you rather or not I think having the drop-down would be beneficial. Also whether your menu is made of Java or HTML in my opinion still matters. Sometimes having a drop-down menu can be beneficial if it's siloed correctly would you be opposed to posting the site? Like Martijn said it depends on a lot of on-site structure Hope I have been somehow helpful, Tom

  • I'm sorry to hear that that happened to you. I'm assuming that you do not have a backup? if you do have a backup obviously could return your site to normal but let's base this question on the idea that you do not have a backup. what I would do is make sure that that site is cleaned up professionally if you do it through this Sucuri I can tell you through first-hand experience they do an excellent job & will back the work for one year and it sounds like you have a pretty nasty bit of malware on your site. Go here and you can have the site crawled and it will tell you a little bit more about what has infected the site and then you can purchase one of their plans to have your site https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/  this is a free check of the site I am sure you'll see that you had some sort of malware injection. This is where you go to purchase the plan that best fits your budget and your needs. All of the plans will remove the hack from your site and remove any blacklists https://sucuri.net/website-security-platform/signup/ This is 100% platform-independent and will give you a very powerful firewall for free with the service for the next year as well. This will prevent your site from being attacked in the same manner it was before. I wish I had a free solution to offer you but this is the closest thing and it's definitely cheaper than hiring a developer to try to figure out whether it's a really bad attack or just something minor you want to make sure. all those back doors are closed. I hope this is of help to you, Tom

  • Hi Chris, thank you very much for your help and suggestions, it is much appreciated.  I'll de-noindex a handful of my biggest artist pages and see if they attract much interest from users. As for the /venues/ pages, these have been fairly neglected to date, so perhaps I need to really focus my attention on them, as you say, and bring in some cross referencing. I have also wondered whether allowing companies to create pages dedicated to their events would be a good route to take - it could be done with ease, so perhaps I should investigate further. Again, thanks very much, and hopefully I can report back with good news at some point. Best wishes Mike

  • Leaving it as is is fine, although you can also properly rel=canonical it to the full post on the other domain if you or the publishing site want you to.  I would probably do that. Technically, it is considered duplicate content but google doesn't actually penalize for "duplicate" content per se. In cases such as yours, google just doesn't assign any ranking strength to the duplicate version--that is not the same as a penalty. So, if it is indexed first on the other site and/or that other site is a stronger site, or there is no  intent to make money through monetizing copied content, google will just assign the value for that content to that other site. https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2013/04/5-common-mistakes-with-relcanonical.html :  We recommend the following best practices for using rel=canonical: One test is to imagine you don’t understand the language of the content—if you placed the duplicate side-by-side with the canonical, does a very large percentage of the words of the duplicate page appear on the canonical page? If you need to speak the language to understand that the pages are similar; for example, if they’re only topically similar but not extremely close in exact words, the canonical designation might be disregarded by search engines. A large portion of the duplicate page’s content should be present on the canonical version. https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66359?hl=en Duplicate content on a site is not grounds for action on that site unless it appears that the intent of the duplicate content is to be deceptive and manipulate search engine results. If your site suffers from duplicate content issues, and you don't follow the advice listed above, we do a good job of choosing a version of the content to show in our search results. “Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin…..” Google Webmaster Guidelines

  • Hi there, Sam from Moz's Help Team here! Are you referring to your Campaigns? If so,  unfortunately, there's no way to change the URL your Campaign is tracking once the Campaign has been created.  Once a Campaign URL is set it cannot be changed because of way we track and store historical data; it would get really confusing to have data for more than one website in a single report. The best thing I could recommend would be to create a fresh Campaign for the new URL. https://analytics.moz.com/campaigns/new You can read more about Campaign setup here https://moz.com/help/moz-pro/getting-started/campaign-setup If you're asking about Link Explorer, you don't need to notify us of a redirect manually - We do take 301 redirects into account in terms of our index updates. Something to note though is that for us to update any 301 link, we would need to re-discover the old pages to be able to follow and update the metrics. This is not likely common for sites with lower authority since old links are not continuously shared on new pages/articles/blogs.   Link Explorer works solely through link discovery and crawling. For every link we index/crawl, these links are not guaranteed to be re-crawled. I hope this helps answer your question! If there's anything else you need, just let me know — I'm always here if you need any help!
