  • Looks like Google is picking the keyword meta tag as the anchor text and description tag for the detail. Though it might be picking the most relevant keyword, on the basis of page content, from the list instead of the first one everytime. Just something I found checking the pages above. The anchor texts are strangely the very first in the list of keywords.

  • Hi Dan, You only need to use one of the tags ( <video:player_loc>or</video:player_loc> <video:content_loc>).</video:content_loc> This is what I'd use: <video:player_loc allow_embed="yes" autoplay="ap=1">http://player.vimeo.com/video/24580638</video:player_loc> Davinia

  • Thank you guys! It's definitely personalized results. It's still such a weak domain though to show to me so highly ranked in Google. I guess that's an exact match domain type of thing though. Sometimes I wish my site had my main keyword in it Thank you all though for your quick responses. Sorry if it was an obvious answer.

  • There is a very clear line in this regard. Yahoo directory does not charge to be added to their directory. They are charging to review your website. They have specific standards. They do not accept all sites. If your site passes the review you are included in their directory. If your site does not pass, the fee is non-refundable and your site is not included. That is the line which Google permits. If a site charges and any site which pays is included, that is not acceptable. If a site charges and any site which is rejected receives a refund, that is not acceptable. Yahoo and BOTW are two examples of permitted directories where a fee is required to be added. BBB and other organizations charge a fee to be accepted into their organization then, once accepted, you receive a listing in their directory. That is accepted as well.

  • Hi Joe, Thanks for the response. Having had a variety of different opinions, and still not being 100% on the right answer, I spent a LOT of time crawling through SEOmoz Q&A: Takeaways from my digging around are: Changes to title tags and URL's should be implemented separately. As you state above, reason for this is so that you can pinpoint problems if they arise (see point 3 of the answer) http://www.seomoz.org/qa/view/49136/revising-urls Title tag changes should also be implemented in stages. Homepage, top 50 pages, everything else (again, see point 3 of the answer): http://www.seomoz.org/qa/view/39946/title-tags-global-changes. (As an interesting aside, Dr Pete clearly states that when making sitewide changes, dont make more than one set of changes per page, it could cause an over-optimisation penalty) URL structure changes should be implemented all in one go: http://www.seomoz.org/qa/view/45183/update-url-structure (this link is an amazing guide from everett sizemore on exactly how to implement URL changes, recommended reading!) I appreciate there's no right and wrong answer, but I think that with the above in mind, the approach I'm going to take to these changes is a scientific one. Make a change, assess results, move forward. 1. Implement title tag changes in stages (monitoring site performance at every stage). Homepage/Category Pages/Everything else. 2.Add new on page content. 3. Add new information architecture (couple of new categories- nothing significant) 4. Implement URL changes through 301 redirects all in one go. Keep old site XML sitemap in place. Once site has been crawled (and new pages found) move to new sitemap and update internal links 4. Implement meta robots 'noindex, follow' to various sections of the site. Not all in one go, but section by section, monitoring results and then moving on if no issues arise Would be interested to know what you think of that as a plan? Also, need to send out love to Dr Pete and Everett Sizemore for their Q&A answers! James

  • From what i have read Google wants their crawler and end users to see the same content and have the same experience. Based on that, if you have a header image that says "Great Deals" and you want search engines to read that, simply place that content in your ALT tag (SEOMoz has even posted studies showing that the ALT tag holds more relevance than the in regards to keyword placement). So my question to you is why would you need the to be their in the first place?

  • I really like Joe's response. I would focus on his second recommendation to have the content added to important landing pages (your commercial pages), then 301 the resource page/s to the landing page/s. Or, you could follow Joe's first recommendation and seek to add good 'llinkable' content to appropriate landing pages from here on in. You have a 'good' problem here and if you go about handling the link equity properly, your landing pages will become your authority (resource) pages.

  • Funny, we had that self-pointing canonical tag since July 8th - just removed it less than a day ago as we thought it might be harmful. So, that means that it didn't help as it was there all the time.

  • Does the server return a 503 not available when it goes down at least? Or is it somehow set to show a 404? You want to make sure it's showing a 503 to the bots so they know the server is down and not that the pages have been removed.

  • If the scheme has a very clear target market you may even want to consider a bit of old fashioned marketing and send some info to targets in the post.

  • I took a quick look a quick look at the plugin and it seems to explain what each area is for right below the boxes you are asking about: Canonical: "The canonical link is shown on the archive page for this term." This allows you to modify the canonical output on the archive page for any specified category. Breadcrumbs: "The Breadcrumbs title is used in the breadcrumbs where this category appears." You are able to modify the breadcrumb output accordingly for SEO purposes in regards to the specified category. While I like the vast majority of the functions on the Wordpress SEO plugin, some of these options seem redundant, or would only be needed if poor site structure/naming was implemented originally implemented.  If that is the case your time may be better spent correcting that. There is a good chance it would be best to contact Joost directly since this is more of a support question for him than SEOmoz, but I hope my answers clarified a few things for you.

  • I agree with the two responses you've received already. If you have good content, you'll want to put it on landing pages on your site. then seek to find (some will find you) sites that will link to your good content/landing pages. This is a much better way of doing things then seeking sites to submit your content to. Duplicate content issues and Panda really make this type of process outdated. I a firm believer in keeping your good content on site.

  • @neil pursey It actually showed all H1 tags from each slide All page elements / attributes are grouped accordingly From top to bottom: It showed the meta's the parent pages the child pages H-tags from each slide in top down order : ) Links tabs footer links The nice thing that I noticed is that all anchor links are clickable, taking you to the relevant page, thus rendering it as it would be displayed to the crawler. Simple and straight forward - Thx Theo van der Zee

  • Sounds like you need to be looking at implementing some canonical tags, here is a blog post from Rand Fishkin when this advancement was made, probably a good starting point to launch your understanding into canonical tags http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps
