  • Hi Chris, I was just referring to the task of a link audit, which would include downloading your links from Google Search Console and/or third-party sites, auditing them to identify the toxicity, and then disavowing the toxic ones.

  • Stephen, The flatter the architecture, the more apt pagerank is to reach all the pages of your site.  However, that has to be balanced with navigation that helps visitors most easily get to where they want to go on the site, which typically runs counter to presenting them with completely flat navigation. If you think of giving visitors fastest access to the content on your site that is most important to the majority of them and then require somewhat more numerous clicks to get to less important info, you'll probably do OK.

  • Thank you for you answer and comments. We're a little scare of putting a hurdle in front of the visitors and will monitor the impact closely, but they do get a lot of valuable information. We will still measure and compare the rate of downloads before and after the changes.

  • Hi Sam, Sorry for the late response. If I had to guess...I would look into a after-market shops (Fast and Furious type places) and car clubs. I could see those places having a good following...but, you're right, Joe's Automotive Repair...not so much. Ruben

  • At Moz, we're using a software solution called RivalIQ to help track what our competitors are sharing and resharing article shares that are working for them (and relevant to our audience). I really like that they send out easy-to-read emails, and we can quickly set these up.

  • Most of my problems have been pretty well documented. When I run into something a little more obscure, it helps that I brew beer with a pretty awesome WP dev. The guy's either going to speak at the next Austin or Portland WordCamp, I'm not sure which atm. I would bug him, but the lucky chump is ramping up on a great new job. The good news is it appears the site is hosted with Blue Host. Give them a call and they can more than likely roll it back without a fuss. The WP 4.0 update doesn't appear to have anything to do with security. So you definitely have a little breathing room to figure this one out. I noticed that it looks like your right sidebar is missing, from your screen grab posted in WP Support. It would interest you to know that 4.0 made some pretty significant changes to the editor. Without knowing what's banging around in /mu-plugins, I would probably look at NextGen Gallery first.

  • Just make sure you no follow them.  If the links were do follow it could be seen as a paid link scheme - I know that sounds quite contrived, but that is how Google might (and has) viewed affiliate links that pass link equity in the past.  They are, in effect, paid links that may help improve organic visibility. You don't want to risk being a part of that "link scheme", so make sure you no follow your links.  It does seem quite absurd I know and you'd think that common sense would prevail if someone was using affiliate links and wasn't aware of the SEO ramifications, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

  • Matt Cutts stated in 2009 that if Google finds more that one link to the same page, that it counts only the first link, and ignores all other links. This info is several years old now, but we have not yet found information about this changing. You can hear it direct from Matt Cutts at http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-one-page-two-links-page-counted-first-link-192718\.  Having multiple internal links to the same web page on your website will not hurt your website, and there is no need or reason to craft the link as a no-follow. Many webmaster have good reasons to have multiple links to the same web page, and Google certainly would not punish a website for this.

  • The titles of those pages are Telecom and Sports, respectively. Neither title really tells either Google or the searcher what the pages are about. Telecom could be a page for a telecom service company or telecom equipment. Sports could be a sporting goods store or a guide to sport programs on television. You are not making it easy for Google to know what category you belong in. For your website, it looks like "Career Options in Telecom" or "Career Counseling for Sports" or something of that nature would do a better job in identifying what your site is about.
