  • Using the campaign url's to track all traffic in analytics from the alternate domain. The issue being is when people search for {domain} rather than put in {domain}.com nothing comes up. I think there's an issue with how the 301 is being served. It serves up a 301 immediately rather than letting google seeing the page, a tracking pixel, and then serving a redirect.

  • You started by saying the problem is duplicate content. Are those pages with the various parameter strings basically duplicate content? Because if they are, no matter what you do you will probably not get them all to rank; the URL is not your main problem in that case. (Though you still should do something about those parameter strings.)

  • Our concern is that the search result for au pair was, at one point, the correct title tag. However, it changed a few weeks ago to Au Pair - InterExchange and we can't figure out why.

  • Those pages will eventually drop out of Google's index, but if there are still sites (either pages within your own site or others) that are linking to any of those pages you will continue to see 404 error codes. I'm working on fixing the same issue on a site that I just started optimizing. The best thing you can do is a 301 redirect from each of the old .php pages to a similar, relevant page that currently exists on the site. This will fix the 404 codes and also pass any page authority from the old page to the new page that it is being directed to. Here's some helpful info from Moz on 301 redirects: http://moz.com/learn/seo/redirection Hope that helps!

  • Thanks David I already had the redirect set up in the htacces file. I think the site was crawled before I had added this to the file…total "occam's razor" moment But now there is a few thousand duplicates because of the /catalogue /search etc… I disallowed that all in the robots file so now just have to wait another week!

  • I agree with the earlier responses left by EGOL and David-Kley. You asked about must-have's and best practices for creating a blog. Coincidentally, one of our fellow-Mozers wrote and pubished a how-to-launch-a-successful-blog post on October 13 that I think will answer your questions and work as a great how-to example at the same time. That same post talks about blog promotion. Neil Paten and Aaron Agius at Sprout Social have also written a very helpful (and free!) Complete Guide To Building Your Blog Audience that you might find helpful. Good luck.

  • As with most graders, they are only there to point you in the right direction, or to bring to light any areas of improvement. If you want additional resources, try some of these. We handpicked these to help people with SEO, and a lot of them link to articles on MOZ. http://www.webdesignandcompany.com/seo-resources

  • It can take a while, sometimes up to a few months. Google doesn't work fast, and it looks like you have already resubmitted the sitemap and fetched the pages. When we launched our new site, we saw a drop for a month, then we started to come back. Now after 6 months, we are higher than we ever were. "Normally a traffic drop like this is because someone failed to do 301 redirects of the old pages to new pages" Agreed. Was the new site launched on the same domain?

  • The most accurate way is to do it manually. Doing a site:YOURDOMAIN.com in Google will alert you to most of the ugly URLs you want to get rid of.

  • The reason is that I need to update my website and that seems like an easy way to do it. My business partner can easily add content once I am finished. I do not want to use wordpress or joomla. I like that i can still keep the .html on my pages. The e-commerce part of it is so fabulously easy.

  • Thank you gentlemen for your answers. As per the post the website is built with ModX CMS and the difficulty has come about because the client is using one database to serve 4 websites.  One of the sites has been configured incorrectly and is creating pages that relate to listings on other sites and passing traffic via a 302 redirect. We're working on fixing the configuration so new pages and 302 redirects are not created.  I want to remove from the index the 2050 302 redirects we've discovered to date.  GWT allows you to remove URLs one at a time although the removal request procedure does not seem appropriate in the situation. Due to NDA can not publish URL.

  • Where I compete, the short tail is becoming enormously competitive.  Almost all of my revenue comes in from extensive long tail content. Extensive.  More than all of my retail competitors and manufacturers combined. Most of my traffic comes in from long tail queries that are informational rather than transactional.  So, although it looks like my conversion rate is bad, the number of conversions is higher because a few of the informational content visitor will purchase.

  • I'd defenitely recommend not to use keyword rich anchor text. Just use your brand name and diversify your link profile.

  • This could be for multiple reasons. If you are looking at raw total links (not unique domains) linking to you, one blogger linking to you with a sitewide link and if that person change his blog's link display from sitewide to homepage only can impact numbers like that. Have you also been monitoring your competitor links ? How have they changed ? Also, the quality of the sites OSE uses it's in index would improve over time, in which case spam blogs etc might get dropped, thereby causing in reduction in the number of links. There could be a number of things. See OSE Stats below from their update on 9th Oct, 2014 166,012,290,869 (166 Billion) URLs 14,298,548,989 (14 Billion) subdomains 168,560,672 (168 Million) Root Domains 836,560,885,910 (836 Billion) Links Followed vs. Nofollowed 2.51% of all links found were nofollowed 63.17% of nofollowed links are internal 36.83% are external Rel Canonical - 19.74% of all pages now employ a rel=canonical tag The average page has 105.24 links on it 87.45 internal links on average 17.79 external links on average
