        1. DISAVOW does it work ? And if it does - when can you see the effect in your webmaster tools ?

The disavow tool is just is a recommendation to google, if you have made efforts to speak to the website master and try and get them removed yourself and still have issues, then use the disavow tool. If you have made no efforts to contact the webmaster then you are simply sending a recommendation to google that you would like link removed and it is up to them to action this, in some cases they do, in others they do not.

        2. How can i remove links when sites aren't visible or there's no contact form ?

Do they have a facebook? Do they any social media that you can use to contact them? No? Then take a screen shot and record that you have made attempts to get the link removed but are unable to do so. Google can't punish you if you have made every effort to remove the link before disavowing.

And remember you can only do one disavow. Therefore if you are removing and uploading new lists, then only the links on the list that is currently uploaded will be considered for disavow.

        3. Do i have to bite the bullet and pay these spammy sites to be removed ?

simply? yes, and record the attempts to pay/contact the webmaster then submit this to google.

        4. Is 1000 + links coming into your site from usually a directory naughty ? and should i remove these asap ?

Depends on the directory but when we were penalised the majority of toxic links were spammy directories, so I wouldn't recommend featuring on them. Also they will be the same entry but with different tags/ categories attached to the page so it will be the exactly same page but indexed several times by google as it is considered by the google bot to be a different page, rather then consider the "tag" that has been placed on the page.

A nice spread of links from different ips, c- blocks and domains is always preferable then a 1000 links from just one domain ( unless it is a gov or .edu site of course!)

I think the 1st thing that you need to understand about the about Google disavow links tool is it's a last resort method.
Google will not accept your request unless you can prove that you have put in a lot of work. Meaning almost like an math class in middle school when you had to show your work on the paper. They want you to submit proof that you have tried to contact the webmaster and it has to be in a specific format I'll give you a link outlining that.
Then Google reviews the entire case on a case-by-case basis. If you were taken advantage of by a black hat firm you should make them aware of that as well. Essentially you have to show them that you have made a very strong effort to get the links removed without just saying to Google here are the bad links will you get rid of them please.

I would recommend using a tool called http://www.removeem.com/ it has 2 options you can save some money and do the work yourself meaning use their platform send out a request to webmasters. You want to find out who they are by any means possible mostly whois data will give you that information. My main reason for recommending remove'em is their is there owned by company recommended by Moz http://www.virante.org/

This company is another one that I have not personally worked with however they claim to be recommended by Moz and they do layout what needs to happen in their features section pretty plainly.
          http://linkdelete.com/
The Google disavowal tool is for sites whose webmasters could not be contacted or would not comply.

As far as Google's position on you paying to have it removed I honestly think they don't care. But when that guy tells you pay up because he wants to make money off of having a really bad website explained to him calmly that you will be forced to relay the information he's told to Google and he will obviously have bigger problems. Chances are the guys can come back and say that he has been penalized already and doesn't care you need to put to get your website information off of his site and he's offering you a method even know it's a scummy thing to do he did not put your site on their you did. Or someone representing you. I would have to know a lot more to tell you where I would actually pay but I would consider it.
I would go with a reputable firm if the site is worth a lot to you. Distilled, Portent, SEER,
Internet marketing ninjas and evolving SEO are all excellent choices.

          1. DISAVOW does it work ? And if it does - when can you see the effect in your webmaster tools ?

It will only work if you put the money and time or both and most likely both.

http://linkdelete.com/ Says if you use them only one month until they submit to Google

It will take be bad links away however it may continue to penalize you afterwards this is all up to Google and its case-by-case if you've done nothing wrong and this is a case of them making a mistake they're going to be nice to you if you're clearly in the wrong and they don't see effort out of you or remorse they will have an opportunity to rank you lower than you would be if they want.
This is not something that happens overnight it could be that you did everything pretty much perfectly and they reject your request based on something very small you do not want to make more than one request if possible you want to get it all done the 1st time I would say you're looking at a minimum of 6 months to complete this whole thing may be longer.

          2. How can i remove links when sites aren't visible or there's no contact form ?

WHO.IS is an excellent site for finding information you can also look for posts on the web by anyone with that domain name in their e-mail. However the software does make a lot easier.

          3. Do i have to bite the bullet and pay these spammy sites to be removed ?

If the price is not too high it would look good that you did pay considering it would show that you're truly remorseful however if someone's just completely taking advantage of you for thousands of dollars and you not telling me how many links are coming out of these things so I have really no idea if it's a good idea for you because I don't know what the dollar amount is in the amount of links or percentage of bad links.

          4. Is 1000 + links coming into your site from usually a directory naughty ? and should i remove these asap ?

It is get the coal out for Christmas time naughty yes and you should remove them ASAP when you say directories though I want to be clear I am not talking about relevant directories if your business is sewing machines not talking about directory of sewing machines.com or reputable directories like the Yellow Pages. For a list of reputable directories check Getlocal.org if your site isn't one of those you can leave it there.

I hope this is been of help to you,
          Thomas

            I appreciate the advice...

I haven't had a penalty notice from google, so when  i used the DISAVOW tool (which i did after trying to contact the site owners, with no joy) there was no option for me to submit my defence and prove to google my efforts my end before using the DISAVOW as a last resort.

If you have a link which i can follow to take me to the relevant place where i can submit my proof of efforts I would be grateful. I haven't taken a massive drop like I know some people have, it's mild but lets be honest - nobody really looks past page 1 and i'm floating around page 2-3 in a lot of areas where I was on the first page and loving life 😞

well I have some good news Matt Cutts stated 3 days ago that you should now use the this about tool even if you have not been penalized yet. I'm sure that they had to deal with so many penalties they want people to somewhat save themselves as well as save Google the time and effort.

              http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2309486/Matt-Cutts-Use-the-Link-Disavow-Tool-Even-if-Your-Site-Hasnt-Been-Penalized

              http://www.brafton.com/news/cutts-seo-dont-wait-youre-caught-red-handed-take-action

this URL has the information that you need to send. At the bottom it has a link that will take you to submitting it

this is where you would go to submit your Disavow. I would read the 2 articles that just came out watch the YouTube video it's not too long things have changed drastically in 3 days.

I'm happy for you I think you're site will get back on track sooner than later.

              Here's the link

you know what put everything that was said here as well you know that you did try to contact the owners. It appears Google is lightening up finally hopefully.

I have to study this quite a bit more so that I am hundred percent aware of everything that this change makes however I would definitely let them know that you did not try to do anything but what you thought was the right thing.

Let me know if I can be of more help.

this is the link you need
