Too many pages or not enough?
Using attributes and combinations is a lot easier and cheaper than not using them. If you create 20 different pages they will all fight each other to rank. You would also need content for 20 different pages as well. Which in itself would be a task if done correctly. I would suggest just having one strong page with good content as opposed to lots of pages with only ok content.

How to track conversions?
If you're taking payments on site, you should setup ecommerce tracking instead and you can use the payment transaction as the goal.

Does anybody know of a reliable website phone call lead tracking service that integrates with Google Analytics?
I would recommend checking out Callrail, but also the list Patrick provided will have good alternatives. Just find the one that meets your needs.

How would you encourage phone calls rather than email enquiries?
we don't do the hard sell If I read that on your website, I would be a lot more likely to call. This is why I would be an email person. I want to avoid this. Would you believe it though??? I wonder how many people would... I guess its worth testing!!! I'll talk to the team and see what they think. Thank you! Unless we know the customer's financial history we can't offer fair and reasonable advice If you tell me this before you start asking I am will be more comfortable about providing it. You probably do this now. hmmm... I honestly don't know. The sales teams do build a rapport with the customer over the phone, which helps I think. I'd need to see their 'script' (they don't have scripts as such, more like checklist to ensure they cover the regulatory/legal requirements) to know for sure. Thanks again for the input - I always look forward to your advice.

Please can anyone recommend any GOOD 'TRAFFIC BUYING COMPANIES ?
I have a client challenging me with this issue right now. Despite me working with the client doing things in an ethical way, they are keen to engage a business who offers this service of being able to offer 'PAID TRAFFIC. For around $70 dollars they will send according to them TARGETED | QUALITY TRAFFIC. The client decided to go ahead and sign up and within 24 hours the site went from having had around 200 sessions a day to over 2000 in just 24 hours. Analytics saw the REFERRAL channel become the leader in bringing traffic and started listing lots of IP ADDRESSES. The company also say there is no spam in the traffic they send to your site. They also say these 'site visitors' are 100% genuine and not bots etc. I am personally a bit sceptical about how this will affect the site building its relationship with Google over time. So, is there evidence that some companies are getting better at delivering this type of service and the technology makes it much more ethical and worth buying into? Of course - what happens when you switch the service off?

Keywords: Anybody know how to find which keywords your competitors are converting?
Hi Justin While it won't show you what is converting, check out SEMRush. It's a great tool that will show you what competitors are ranking for, the estimated traffic they are getting for that keyword, as well as the landing page. The beauty with this tool is that you can research from both a SEO and paid perspective. You can learn more about the features and tools here. Hope this helps a bit! Good luck!

This is great and helpful advice, I ran a few campaigns in early January ~ over 3months to find exactly what you were talking about, I took these results based on reflecting targeted keywords for our organic search, most of the searches and click throughs were coming from NZ, I just find it hard to believe that its quiet low in NZ. So I'm not too sure whats going on there, and trying to figure out how to go about really digging into what keywords i should be targeting and really digging into.

Browser-based redirect vs. dynamic content
Google does not like what you are doing! Google wants to have the same content on a page (that rules out option a) Option B sounds better. but make sure the copy is still on the page. Just vary the content you are presenting based on the user. (this is called the liquid internet)

User Testing a Website
One of my favourite test sites is https://usabilityhub.com. You can create numerous tests asking pretty much all the questions you have in your list above. The big bonus is it is credit free for the community edition, although you can buy bulk credits or subscribe if you wish to, I tend to acrew new credits the free way by performing the odd test for other users. It is definately worth a look.

Vat conversion rates (UK)
Dirk, I perhaps was not clear enough - I am not suggesting that prices are displayed without VAT alone. We would display both (for the reasons you point out). The point is that many non B2B customers get confused by 2 prices, particularly those from overseas and it makes the site look a mess. My recommendation is emphatically to display just the inc VAT price as that is what everyone pays and it removes any confusion. I guess this discussion proves that there is little evidence to show the impact of this on conversion rates.

Anything Good or Bad about Google Trusted Stores ?
Thanks EGOL, I'll take a look. One of the articles I read said the Trusted Store reviews were only related to service, not actual products which is also very limited. Mainly I was thinking the badge would be a plus for consumer confidence. Thanks again!

Time to purchase vs Time Lag for business cycle data
Hi, Thanks for your reply. To clarify, in your opinion Time to Purchase and Time Lag are useless reports? I've not had a chance to look at KM, KI or CI. How do they work? I assume they cannot work retrioactively and are cookie based (cookies with a long TTL). There is an obvious point of failure here - I read somewhere (shaky citation I know) that cookies are cleared much more frequently now (monthly) so this data has to be heavily caveated at best. Thanks again for your help.

Should I link from an optimised product image to the product page from a blog post?
Hi Steve, I don't see a problem with doing that but best practice would be to leave the optimized image alone and add some linked anchor text somewhere or maybe link the product name within the blog post instead? Google Experiments issues
Hi Nick, Regarding the path, you will need at least a second variation URL in step 2, but it does not need to be live. At the end of step 4, make sure there are no errors. The most likely error on step 4 is that the code is not on your page. You wouldn't want to click "start test" if the pages weren't live either, obviously. Now to the question of showing the same page throughout the journey. Experiments does not do this by default; it's more of a landing page tool. There is a way to make it happen, and that's to change the navigation on the test version. I've seen companies either clone every page that links to the test with links to version 1 and 2 (yuck) or use a cookie that switches out all links to the original with the test version if a cookie is fired from the test version. The difficulty of doing this will vary based on your developer's skills and the CMS you're using. These work-arounds are not ideal, and they introduce more potential errors - as all complexity does. It really only works for small sites and landing pages with limited paths in and out. If you're looking to keep the experiment consistent and run a lot of tests I would strongly recommend checking out a tool like Optimizely. I've worked with Optimizely in the past, and had nothing but great experiences. Just make sure to test multiple screen sizes before you launch.

Ideas on multi layered conversion opportunities
Hi Christopher. There are quite a few of these depending on what it is you're selling. Things like SaaS providers who are providing a managed service for an entire enterprise typically have a very robust sales process but within analytics they'll do things like associating goal values with watching a video, downloading a PDF, attending a webinar, number of pages on the site visited, and so on. All these actions get tallied into a score that is associated with the lead and best case recorded into the CRM so that sales has an understanding of which leads are closer to purchase than others or how qualified a new lead might be. Avinash Kaushik also goes into great detail on this in several places on his blog. Here's one such example: http://www.kaushik.net/avinash/web-analytics-tips-identify-website-goal-values/ You'll hear these called goal values, micro conversions, lead attribution (in the context of valuing multi-channel work), and so on. Basically it's everything that isn't a sale in the classic sense, but could be associated with a value in terms of "free" marketing, engagement, life-time-value, and so on. Sales are often included in the full model as well, but nearly any business starts out tracking those. Hope this helps your study further. Cheers!

I agree with Hutch. You (the owner of the website) need to ask the right questions. The analyst can collect data to answer those questions. Then you need a webmaster who can implement the changes that will improve performance. The important work is on the people who run the website. The analyst just fetches the data.
