  • It's always interesting to see how sitemap.html performs in terms of pageviews. According to Analytics at least, many users find them useful -- and that's enough for me to usually want to recommend including one. Try it, test it, and if users find it valuable then keep it. Like it or not, I think it's true to say that there's still a small segment of web users who use sitemaps as on of their main methods of navigation so I think on that basis, there's an argument to include them.

  • And if you're scraped, the links still point back at your site.

  • Hey Mike I have a site, it lost about 80% of traffic on the 7th of February. I have seen that there was some talk of results changing in the UK on the 7th but this one site has been hammered. It's annoying really as the major competitor is almost a perfect case for how to cheat. The business provides several services all from one site as does the one I manage. But, they also have the URLs for each of these services  and use them as single pages designed to throw the user to the main site (duh - doorway pages) but... the thing is, it works for them, has worked for years and years and on this last update, it seems to be getting better. Really annoying and likewise, I have not had any good feedback as to what the problem may be from other SEO folks I know. So, good folks of SEOMoz - any ideas on this one? It may help me figure out what has gone wrong with my fathers site as well which is http://www.vinyltodigital.co.uk Marcus

  • Hmm, not sure as i'm kind of new to seo, but my instinct would be to pick the one w the top keyword ranking(s) and redirect all traffic from the other two (if that's possible). You'd lose your PR w a new domain and keeping it as is, you are surely getting hit by Dup Content. Also, as far as mgmt's argument, if all 3 sites rank high for one keyword, why not just consolidate all traffic into one place? Also, they should be looking at more than 1 keyword i would think.. Lastly, you might want to look at a site like going.com or timeout.com to see how they manage pages in different cities yet keep it all under one domain. Hope this was helpful. -Zack

  • As far as I know underscores are not seen as separators so that means two words with an underscore between will be tagged as one word. My personal suggestion is to avoid underscores as much as possible. All separators are good beside underscores. We work a lot with hyphens and the results are good. Hope it helps !

  • agreed! we ran into the same problem with content (articles, etc). if you think of it in the same way as blog posts, they each have a unique URL, but with tags (i.e. categories) you are able to get them posted to the appropriate category landing pages. have a somewhat related issue that i posted here

  • There's thousands of bloggers who write about jewelry: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=jewelry+inurl%3Ablog There's cool stuff like this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/20/geeky-jewelry-the-nerdies_n_429408.html http://mashable.com/2010/08/05/geek-jewelry/ Videos with hundreds of thousands of views: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=videos&search_query=jewelry&search_sort=video_view_count&suggested_categories=26%2C10%2C24 There's no niche, IMO, that's too boring or too stale for great content.
