  • If you and your server do not have a backup of your website, it is complicated. You can try to recover from Web Archiver as you have been told, but you probably won't have it complete. Also it will be created with some CMS type Wordpress reason why you will have lost the data base, in addition to the subject, etc. What hosting does not have a backup of at least a week?

  • The most important is to redirect all your backlinks via 301 to the new URLs. As you've been told, why not develop the entire site in the subdomain and then move it to the new one, so you don't play with redirects and traffic from one subdomain to another.

  • It is a pretty common issue with sites that have articles, users or products. Unfortunately, I am not sure if you can get rid off this. Moz.com has this as well if you type this in google search site:https://moz.com/community/q Ross

  • Google is good at understanding the relationship between sub/primaries via linking and etc.  and some of the issues may be more of server response time for the sub and etc. I agree w/Ross--I prefer directories. However, if the structure has been around a while and migration is difficult,  I don't see a huge benefit in migrating. Also, I believe there are some ways to use .htaccess that you can rewrite a subdomain to the directory. See this video from Google's John Mueller for more information.

  • toti, I assume it's not the theme that's the problem in google my business (google places) rather, it's likely their shared address. If two businesses are using the exact same address (and phone number too?)  google may have problems with it. As  far as two website having the same theme but different content--that is not a problem.

  • Hi Chris, thanks for your answer. I don't have any spam intention, those links will help to navigate from the main site to the subsites, which, being hosted in subfolders of the main site, will have the URL mainsite.com/subsite1; that is, as if they were categories. The point is, I want the whole network based on subdirectories to work as a single site based on categories... I could do the same using categories on a single site, but hosting it on a subfolder of the main site allows me to transform it on a completely different site simply by making a TLD mapping to its folder. Obviously, making this domain mapping operation would transform "internal" links between subsite and main site into external links, but I'd have the option of removing them prior to making the domain mapping.

  • Yep, add to it, labels are not the #1 argument a website is being listed or shown in search in the first place. So dont put too much of effort into a label really.

  • So, how big of a mega menu are we talking about? Ten links?  Fifty?  A hundred? I think if you go waaaaaayyy to big it can be a problem with both usability and SEO.  But the SEO problem is not in the link dilution.

  • Yoast premium has that  functionality. You checked for that? And you've  verified that the page is actually  redirecting?

  • So the non dub version of the URL points to www right now. Somehow, what they plan to do is take 25% of all visitors to our website and send them to www2 instead of www. I don't know how this works personally. I guess with analytics, how do you even set that up? As a separate profile in Google Analytics? But the domain is the same, so can you do sub-domain specific? I need separate analytics for the new site to make sure conversions look good, and that's what I'm not sure how to set up. My secondary concern is doing a noindex on the www2 subdomain. Is that the best way to keep this out of the index? Once testing is done we'll move the new site to www and redirect www2 to it as well. Any thoughts on that set up?

  • Changing themes should have no negative impact on your rankings especially if you are using either the Yoast SEO or Rank Math SEO plugins which handle most of the onsite optimization issues for your site independent of the theme you are using. I've changed themes dozens of times over the years and never had a negative impact in rankings as a result.

  • Having performed maybe upwards of 80 & without any real traffic loss for more than a week. It is because I follow the rules very thoroughly when you get to the bottom of this how do you please use one of the crawlers mentioned use a complete search and replace when necessary across the entire site just to make sure everything’s in place. I don’t know what type of website you’re running however if it is WordPress or if you I want toget some extra traffic I would make sure that the blog is a sub folder.  if it is WordPress you can do this on a managed managed host platform like Pagely , ServeBolt or Kinsta for just $50 a month. example.com/blog Redirect mapping process If you are lucky enough to work on a migration that doesn’t involve URL changes, you could skip this section. Otherwise, read on to find out why any legacy pages that won’t be available on the same URL after the migration should be redirected. The redirect mapping file is a spreadsheet that includes the following two columns: Legacy site URL –> a page’s URL on the old site. New site URL –> a page’s URL on the new site. When mapping (redirecting) a page from the old to the new site, always try mapping it to the most relevant corresponding page. In cases where a relevant page doesn’t exist, avoid redirecting the page to the homepage. First and foremost, redirecting users to irrelevant pages results in a very poor user experience. Google has stated that redirecting pages “en masse” to irrelevant pages will be treated as soft 404s and because of this won’t be passing any SEO value. If you can’t find an equivalent page on the new site, try mapping it to its parent category page. Once the mapping is complete, the file will need to be sent to the development team to create the redirects, so that these can be tested before launching the new site. The implementation of redirects is another part in the site migration cycle where things can often go wrong. Increasing efficiencies during the redirect mapping process Redirect mapping requires great attention to detail and needs to be carried out by experienced SEOs. The URL mapping on small sites could in theory be done by manually mapping each URL of the legacy site to a URL on the new site. But on large sites that consist of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of pages, manually mapping every single URL is practically impossible and automation needs to be introduced. Relying on certain common attributes between the legacy and new site can be a massive time-saver. Such attributes may include the page titles, H1 headings, or other unique page identifiers such as product codes, SKUs etc. Make sure the attributes you rely on for the redirect mapping are unique and not repeated across several pages; otherwise, you will end up with incorrect mapping. Pro tip: Make sure the URL structure of the new site is 100% finalized on staging before you start working on the redirect mapping. https://moz.com/blog/website-migration-guide Appendix: Useful tools Crawlers Screaming Frog: The SEO Swiss army knife, ideal for crawling small- and medium-sized websites.
