  • Hi Aidan I'm getting a similar problem on a site I'm working on. The on page rank checker "can't reach the page". I've checked everything obvious (at least I think I have!) May I ask how you eventually resolved it? Thanks Aidan

  • Thanks Mike. We're going to run with it for a while on one of our sites and see how it performs. I'll try and post any meaningful results here at a later date.

  • Thanks, Moosa. The "What Should Be Accessible To Users & Search Engines" section answered the majority of my question but I'm going to hold off just a little bit longer and see if I can get a few more answers or reading suggestions on the wordpress dupe issue. Thanks again!

  • So you know you do have to tell him to turn on the content  delivery network with zippy kid and if your site is not performing let them know they will tweak it

  • I had one experience with an ecommerce site that needed to rank for product codes not just the product name.  We didn't want to hurt the existing rankings for the product names so we added a " | 45eSUT" (product code) to the end of the title.  This made most of the product titles way longer than the best practice length but within a few weeks began seeing our products showing up in Google under those codes. It doesn't directly answer your question but I think the value of the title is found at the beginning but as long as it's not keyword stuffed, Google seems to appreciate the whole thing. CTR is another story.

  • oh... those pages with the hidden text on Google properties.... I hate those pages.  Hate them.  Hate them. They usually have trivial content too.  A whole page with a few sentences and you have to view 15 pages to get the information that you need. They should be smacked by panda. Did I say that I really dislike those pages.

  • I recently came across this for Yeast SEO plugin and there was a huge 'fight' regarding how to disable Jetpack Open Graph doubled tags. Have a look for it here - http://yoast.com/jetpack-and-wordpress-seo/ Hope that helps! Jungles

  • Hi Lara, Like with so many things in this business, there is not a simple yes or no with regard to Yahoo Stores. There's some options. Let's discuss this via our support desk. Please post a support ticket and we'll get back to you on this.

  • Very basically, the designs have to look great (modern look, clean code, responsive design is a bonus) and have a certain level of SEO-friendliness on launch. I think it's very important to know which CMS they use, whether it be a 3rd party product or a custom solution, to determine how SEO capable and customizable it is.

  • It cut off my answer so I'll add it here: This is what I would say. Don't create these pages. I assume you have locations in each city, instead develop resources for each city including location details, and other information specific to them. If you don't have resources for them per city, you shouldn't be going per city. Do things for the users, not for ranking. But above all else, don't create these pages. Have a water damage page if you must and if the information changes per city, or you have locations, then create those resource pages. But if those locations do more than water damage repair, don't build one for each. Just give information about that location, what they offer and any other information people might want in that area. Hope this helps.

  • That's a good one! One of my clients did that too on a regular basis. After we found the tag they got over 500 new pages ranking very high, and of course we were credited with the improvement, so that was a nice thank you check

  • HTML 5 doesn't care which way you do it, but the 2nd way is invalid in XHTML or HTML 4.  I prefer the first way, since it looks cleaner (to me) in the code, and there is less chance of a broken tag (if someone misses a < or >) trashing the link completely.

  • So, we all know that The big, huge, over-arching idea is that Google ranks sites based on what they believe is best for the end user. With the video that Eliathah posted and taking into consideration which URL structure would be easier for a user, I think hyphens are a clear correct answer. Hyphens are easier for users to type (b/c they remove the step of using the 'Shift' key), therefore they're more user-friendly, therefore they're more SEO friendly. No?

  • Great list. Thank You! Would you also put location into alt-tag? Like "dog pound los angeles" What about putting a web page with a URL "dog-pound-los-angeles-ca" or the extreme "dog-pound-LA-zipcode-address" Has anyone done that and gotten back SERP improvement for local?

  • Might I suggest using screen size or user agent to trigger the option to the user something like: "We've detected that you may be using a mobile device. Would you like to go to our mobile friendly site instead?" Research shows giving folks a choice results in a better experience. Nothing more annoying that not having the choice, especially considering the wide array of screen sizes that are now being used. The live site may be more user friendly and you'll also get some valuable feedback on how popular you mobile site is.
