  • We saw a lot of this across multiple client websites. Once we saw it on 2, we went and checked all of the others we are optimizing and noticed almost 50% of them changed. Mainly, their Home page Title and Description were modified for various searches related to the client's brand/business name. Taking note of what Google had changed everything to and cross referencing to the on page content, we edited their Home page Title, Description and also portions of their body content or widget section content. We then resubmitted the sites to Google through Webmasters Tool and have seen most convert to what we want and Google is now displaying. Try those tactics. Hope this was helpful based on our experiences. - Patrick

  • I like Frederico's response and agree with it. If you are providing additional content and value (which is good for the site visitor), you are fine. We actually do a very similar thing with highly technical data and the only time we ran into duplicate content issues was when we accidentally had three pages about the same product because it applied to three different categories. To fix the issue, we created a new product page listing all three categories on the page itself, and applied canonical tags from the other three duplicate pages to the new page.

  • HI Federico Thanks for that. No I dont buy links and dont have a backlinks strategy. Everything should be natural. Having said that I dont check to see if there are any spammy links linking to me either. I have no manual actions and never have....at the moment im nofollowing more outbound links, deleting signature links from legitimate forums im on (there only a few) and clearing up spammy <alt tags="">which were basically the product of laziness as i have 8 - 10 similar images per post (paintings, photos, illustrations - hard to distinguish)</alt> Any more advice welcome...

  • Alot of the online community weren't sure if it was an unpdate - it was a sneaky one if it was. Either way im continuing to provide good original content 4 times a day but am also undoing and cleaning alot of careless over optimization mistakes such as too many similar <alt tags="">mor no following of outbound links, deleting signatures inks in forums (even though theyre totally legitimate) an adding some speed. Having said all that im stumped as to why i got penalised. Im an arts site, I show paintings and photographs. There are no adverts. My bounce rate is negligible, I have a 3.5 pages/visitor page view, i dont have a backlink strategy, my content is orginal, etc, etc.....very frustrating... </alt> Worst thing about this is that I still dont know why it happened so I can't get to the root of the problem. I hope you're right and things get better. Is there any average length of time before things get back to normal if you've improved things? Any helpful, solid, uplifting advice is welcome

  • Not exactly. In a nutshell - no. But sometimes if your PR is 5 and higher it is a good sign that your site has good content and good back links from trusted sites. This is what donates to your reputation (irony)). But there is no direct connection with ranking and quantity of traffic to the site.

  • Hmm. Try making a video sitemap with a few videos that currently aren't appearing in serps, submit to GWT and see if they appear in a week.

  • While I definitely think e-commerce over ecommerce, I bet ecommerce is typed in more. It could just be me, but I never use hyphens in search. For our site, we rank pretty close for attorney and lawyer keyword phrases, and those two synonyms are more different than e-commerce and ecommerce. So, either way, I bet you'll be fine. I would be curious to see your rankings vs conversions though. I'd bet ecommerce would rank higher, because I think that will be typed more, but I bet e-commerce would convert better, because that strikes me as the professional term. Just my personal take, sorry I don't have any hyphen data for you. Good luck, Ruben

  • They may for awhile - the thing is, WMT is not updated regularly (think of it as PageRank, just a little faster. lol) So you could disavow and 4 weeks later see results but see the links in WMT for 3 months.  I wouldn't worry about what's in there if you disavowed correctly.  Single links & domains, like this: http://www.links.com/innerlinks-here/ Domain: andthiswholesite.com

  • Hey Bob, This might be an older post from 2011, but Cyrus does a great job getting to the root of what you are searching for. I don't want to rewrite his suggestions, but let's say I have this page bookmarked to reference whenever I need it Understanding Google's freshness factor and how it affects search rankings Oh, and read Justin's post on this as well! Great insight into the technical Google patents and breakdown.

  • Yes, it would show up in your analytics as an active user but the fact that the query returns no results means it's not been indexed. All good. Peter

  • I guess an approach like mozcast would be the most indicated, X amount of terms/webpages that have an associated domain/page authority and author associated and you need to monitor how that shows in page rankings. I am not aware of how Klout or similar services score their users or even if they leave it open.

  • Google updated their webmaster guidelines about a year ago to specifically frown on lists of keywords like this. See: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66358?hl=en
