  • Thank you, tfpa.  I really appreciate that. lol....  lots of people don't like my advice...  and I have to say that it isn't good for everybody everytime. Instead of advice, most of the time, these days, I try to say "what I do" and people can decide if they want to do the same.

  • or robots.txt file also nofollow isn't a rule it's also a guide - most SE's see and listen to it but  some ignore it, even Google has been known to ignore it on some sites.

  • very odd indeed. Its a frame-forwarded url, it's something 123-reg.co.uk still offers They sell it as "if you do this you can have two homepages/urls with different titles and descriptions but the same content" ... its nothing of the sort. It would be near impossible to offer real SEO to the new url, it would do nothing for it. It feels like a case of the company rebranding and this was the shortest way for them to "move" the site to a new place. To do an audit just have one line - can't see website, it's in an iframe good luck

  • Hi Robert, The rewrite rules shared by Patrick should work well for that although you could also use Yoast's Wordpress SEO plugin that features options to do that through the control panel. Nonetheless, in general what can be better in performance and also for tracking purposes with your site URL, leaving tracking parameters while avoiding content duplication content is to use canonical tags. You can also set them easily for Wordpress with Yoast's plugin. I hope this helps! Aleyda

  • If you look at most of the Facebook comment implementations, they're usually embedded with an iframe. Technically speaking, that is making the content load from another source (not on your site). As we're constantly seeing Google evolve with regard to "social signals", however, I suspect embedded Facebook comments may begin to have an impact if they pertain to content that is actually located on your website.

  • A blog is a must for an eccomerce site today, Lindsay. That's not just from an SEO perspective. It also helps bring in new users, raises brand awareness and is pretty much the bomb. Yes, you can easily add a blog as a subdomain (blog.site.com) or as a subdirectory (site.com/blog). You can go either way but subdomains are going out of style a bit in the SEO world. In my opinion it doesn't matter a whole lot. Keep in mind that you can post content on your site AND other people's sites. That's actually a great recipe for success. : )

  • Thanks for checking this out Francisco. Per your suggestion and after a little research, we actually went through today and removed our signature from all of the websites we manage. It is a tough pill to swallow since it seems like almost every design firm does this, but we want to do it right. And you are 100% correct, the footer link to the design firm's website is not best for SEO or the client, which is always our first priority. Thank you again for your response.

  • That's a guest post so i'll look into that one.  I rank for Hamptons Dj in google and nothing else.  While i rank for about 31 keywords in Bing and Yahoo.  It's always been like that trying to find out why.

  • It is something we have considered, but it is a very good source of income. Obviously this only when it is ranking. It has a whole lot of history (granted this is why it is not ranking) and the domain is our brand as well. Basically we would rather keep it if we can. Kindly thanking you for your advice Matt.

  • The most important thing to think about here is your visitors and not the search engines. Imagine being a customer and searching for "log house prices". Chances are you will want to see a list of prices. This lends itself to the category page perfectly. I would imagine that seeing an article or content page would have a higher bounce rate and will most certainly have a lower conversion rate (for this keyword at least). Remember that there is no reason not to have a nice bit of content on the category page if it adds value to your visitors. With regards to the term "log houses", this could be used for a more generic page which covers your entire range. This decision should be based on how much time you have to spend on the website, your resources and more importantly, the competition for the keyword. If you feel like you can rank for that term instead of log house prices then go ahead and give it a go... It will be harder though, that's for sure. Matt

  • Its not a good practice to redirect old -> new -> newer urls. It is referred as sneaky redirects and it will lower the SERPs. Good option will a. old -> newer b. new -> newer Decide any of the two options from above depending the number of backlinks to old and   new urls. Also put a custom 404 error pages to handle the 404 errors occured from other urls.

  • It is always a good thing to ask direct questions about what you are trying to learn.  Otherwise, you will get very generic answers like, "Search Google" or "continue to read the forums here."

  • You can use wild-cards, in theory, but I haven't tested "?" and that could be a little risky. I'd just make sure it doesn't over-match. Honestly, though, Robots.txt isn't as reliable as I'd like. It can be good for preventing content from being indexed, but once that content has been crawled, it's not great for removing it from the index. You might be better off with META NOINDEX or using the rel=canonical tag. It depends a lot on what parameters you're trying to control, what value these pages have, whether they have links, etc. A wholesale block of everything with "?" seems really dangerous to me, IMO. If you want to give a few example URLs, maybe we could give you more specific advice.
