  • Hey Paul, and thanks for the reply. This certainly feels like it is helping me close in on the mystery (more likely my knowledge gap!) however, I am getting some odd results. I think maybe I need to wade through all my attempts at 301-ing these troublesome old URLs and see if I have done something weird which might to be blame but anyway, for the record, here is the new mystery: When I pop in the following: http://www.tesselaars.com/_blog/Inside_Flowers/post/Online_Marketing_for_Florists_Part_1_-_A_Website_You_Won't_Regret/ I get redirected to http://www.tesselaars.com/valentines-day-statistics-2013/ I can only figure I must have entered a 301 of this nature, which seems odd as it's a different post, but hey, after five million 301s it is possible! I will check that out and see if I can get a clean and clear result and report back. Thanks for your help

  • From my interpretation of Google's Patent filing in 2011 on Agent Rank (continuation patent from the original one in 2005), if you are truly writing good content on both fields, one is the way to go.  The industry is using the term AuthorRank so I'll use that for consistency going forward. The idea that you can have higher AuthorRank in one subject vs another, I feel, is completely wrong.  AuthorRank will be determined by a number of factors including how often your content is shared, how quickly it's shared, who shared it, how many +1s, likes, etc.  It will be a completely query-independent calculation.  It's much like PageRank in that respect.  PageRank is query-independent because it takes the links pointing to your site, the quality of those links and comes up with a numerical score.  I think this is what AuthorRank will do to.  It will take the author, the number of shares, likes etc and come up with a numerical score. Google will then implement this score into their Algorithm and produce a SERP. "...the reputation of a particular agent is a function of the reputation of the content and agents which refer to it." (from the patent)  I think what this is saying is they're going to grade you on the quality of the people who like your content. Basically, what I'm saying is that your "reputation" will depend on how often your content is shared as a whole, NOT on which topics you write about.  SEO of the page will still matter when it comes to placement in the SERP but AuthorRank, much like PageRank, will have a major factor. Let's take this from Google's point of view for a second.  Their job is to provide the most relevant content for a given query. Now, let's say I write articles about SEO all the time, they get shared, promoted on SEOmoz, +1d etc. In general, me showing up high in the SERPs is good for searches because I'm a reputable source on SEO because my peers "voted" for me. But let's say I start a brand new blog on Cookies (the edible kind) and no one cares about my cookies, no one shares my recipes, no one +1s them on Google+.  Just because I had a high AuthorRank doesn't mean I deserve to rank for everything, right. So here's what I think will happen. I will start to loose AuthorRank because a portion of my content is not being shared.  The percentage of my content that is being shared drops to only about 60 percent or so.  As a SEO, I want my SEO stuff to start ranking again so I'll stop writing about cookies and stick to SEO. Google likes this because the people who do like Cookies didn't like my content enough to share it so I drop out of the SERPs on that end.  AuthorRank will FORCE people to create really high quality content or suffer the consequence of it.  People will naturally stick to the topics they know really really well so it can be shared and the searcher looking for a particular subject gets a really good experience because the SERPs will provide the most relevant content for a given query. To answer your actual question...got off topic there a little...of "should [I] link my G+ profile and become a "contributor/author" to the new e-commerce site(s) or if I should have someone else in the company be the "face" of this website."  If you are truly passionate about both topics then I would say connect it and run with it.  If you are truly writing quality content, it will get shared, liked etc and help contribute to your AuthorRank.  You mentioned you were authoritative in your niche.  I'm not sure what you mean by that and how that relates to authorship.  I do know that for Google+, you can have circles and it's a great way to separate the two fields unlike that on Facebook.  You can set up Circles with different niches so you can drive content to those particular people in each niche.  That should get you more likes, shares +1s.  Not to mention that a lot of Google+ stuff passes link juice too. I hope this helps.  I know it is a little long winded but I hope I conveyed my thoughts clearly. BTW, here's the links to the Agent Rank patent so you can read it over and determine (predict) what is best. • In my case, xml-sitempas works extremely good. I fully understand that a DB solution would avoid the crawl need, but the features that I get from xml-sitemaps are worth it. I am running my website on a powerful dedicated server with SSDs, so perhaps that's why I'm not getting any problems plus I set limitations on the generator memory consumption and activated the feature that saves temp files just in case the generation fails.

  • Kyle, interesting... I knew that is not possible. Do you have a lot of high quality backlinks left or did you start building new ones?

  • use some nice AJAX script to list them by alphabetical order or some other order? I assumed from the title you were wondering if you needed to crop the number of links, the answer is not if it's just a few pages and it's clearly just a directory in that part of the site. Those links won't pass huge value due to sheer volume so webmaster tools may scream but I wouldn't be horrendously bothered by them.

  • Hello, Well to me it makes sense to use "oak flooring" in the product titles since that is what it is. Unless you know a better alternative way of describing the product I wouldn't change it. Sometimes with e-commerce you end up with a lot of products with almost identical names. In those cases I try to add dimensions, colors, etc to the product titles. I have a theory that Google is smart enough to figure out it is an e-commerce site and that a lot of products with almost identical names might be on the same page. One thing you could try to rank a little bit better is to the change a couple of product titles (not all) so the title begin with "Oak Flooring".

  • Hi guys Thanks for your replies. It is the main challenge, yes, to get the recipe pages indexed without being able to provide unique content. We do not have copyright problem because we have contracts with the sources. Lily

  • There are number of other signals you can send the search engines to try to speed up indexing of the new site, Eblan. once new site is live, resubmit xml sitemap to both Google And Bing Webmaster Tools use Fetch as Googlebot and Fetch as Bingbot on each Webmaster Tools to crawl and submit the most important pages from each of the most important sections of the site earn some new links to the pages of the new site (social media is especially useful for this - remember to update address in all SM profiles) request that high-value links pointing to old site are updated to new site (this can take some outreach to other webmasters - start this process well before the new site is to go live). Hope that helps? Paul P.S. Here's an extensive SEOMoz post on the steps to implement and monitor a domain migration. And here's a great migration checklist infographic. You're going to want to get  as much of this right as possible, as there can be considerable risk when doing this kind of major change

  • Basically, www domains are a subdomain of example.com. You don't need to have your subdomains like www.service.example.com, if that was what you were asking. That's just poorly structured URLs IMHO. There shouldn't be any different for edu or gov domains.

  • Hi Chauhan, I'm going to leave this question open for discussion, as, unfortunately, I am not well acquainted with the state of Local SEO in India (just the US). In 2010, Google stopped showing website design and SEO firms in their local results, so if this is the case in your country, the pursuing a Google+ Local page may be of little or no value to your business. Instead, going with organic an social efforts will be important to you. My understanding of the 500 error is that it has affected merged Google+ Local pages. See: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2012/11/26/google-page-500-error-bug-work-around/ I honestly don't know when the 500 error issue will be resolved, but it does sound to me like your business isn't really a candidate for local inclusion.

  • You need completely different AND substantive AND engaging. Most of my content attacking similar keywords has 500 to 2000 words and 2 to 8 images.  Some have a short video. These pages hold visitors. Google has become very stingy about giving two positions on the first page of the SERPs.  Two years ago I had three and four positions on the first page of the SERPs for lots of my good keywords.  Now, it is hard to get more than three unless you are after keywords with very little competition or keywords that are very similar to your brand name.  However, I have a product page and an article page at the top of the SERPs for lots of keywords. I view the three keyword examples that you gave as being very distinct.  I would not expect those three articles to be in competition with one another.  Maybe "automotive advertising agency" sneaking in the the SERPs for "advertising agency".  However, if you are going after this in the USA market the competition for "advertising agency" is not especially easy.  I think it would be hard to get two listings on the first page of that SERP.

  • Now this seems like a funny deal by Google...or maybe I am missing something but .com have a better link profile then .co.uk and as far as the anchor text on links is concern yes it is keyword orientated but the reason why Google cannot penalize this is because it’s their domain name as well so it will also consider this as their brand name... The only thing that I think why.co.uk domain have a higher authority is because they are using content on the home page where as you have your website page with images only... not sure if it is going to help or not but try to add some content on the home page to see if you get any improvement in terms of ranking and traffic. Just my 2 cents!

  • I have clients that ask me this question (eg "how can I add quantity links to the quality stuff you're working on?") and I tell them to go ahead and do it if they're determined to do it, but the ROI of time spent is minimal in most cases. Some go ahead and do it anyways, which is fine in most cases as long as they're avoiding spammy practices and using branded anchor text. Blog commenting, forum posting, and spending time answering Q&A sites can be effective and produce a good return - but the value is in the click-through, not the nofollowed links. They're rarely effective tasks to hire out to a VA unless that person has an understanding of your product and native English skills. You need to be able to provide value above and beyond the generic comments with an obvious link or cry for attention that most people use. Here's one decent way to interact in forums, provide value, and see a decent ROI: http://pointblankseo.com/ecommerce-forum-link-building. Emphasis is on "interact" and "provide value" - without those two things you're just another spammer. The same concepts can be applied to blog comments and Q&A sites.

  • No problem! If you notice several bad backlinks, you could use a tool like removeem.com. Is a paid tool, but it will help you identifying those back links and contact the site owners. I hope you get it resolved.

  • Thank you everyone for the suggestions! I will reoptomize the content and start link building. I was looking at the directory list here but most of them are complete garbage! Any recommendations?

  • Hey Guys thanks for the help Yes I am using woocomerce. The import is all set up and runs all by it''s self using cron The problem is the category field in csv  cant be changed (at least not by the wholesaler ) so we would need to write some code to make that happen. I might try adding some new categories and and still keep the old ones (otherwise) wordpress/woocommerce wouldnt know where to put the products.
