  • If Moz is crawling them it implies that somewhere in the source of your page you are linking to these url's. Try crawling your site with a tool like Screamingfrog & check which pages are generating these links. Then look in the source of the page - it should be somewhere in the code. It would already help if you would put a canonical url like http://www.example.ch/de/example/marken/brand/make-up/c/Cat_Perso_Brand_3 on the page. Dirk

  • Hi Erick, Thanks for the response. It all makes sense to me, and I'll push for it. I'll have to build a case of why we want to go with a subfolder, so having feedback and real life case studies from others is great! Thanks!

  • Hi there, Eric is right in that linking through other authoritative pages to your product can help increase the rankings and traffic to that page. Generating links to the domain generally can also indirectly help individual pages rank better as well. Here are some specific ways that you may be able to generate links to either your product page directly or to other pages: Check for people linking to broken pages on your website. You can check Mozscape and filter by 404 pages to find these. if you do find any, you can reach out to the people who link to get them to change it or you can 301 redirect to another relevant page. If you use images on your product page or use your company logo, use a Google reverse image search to look for people using these images but not linking to you. Generate content ideas for use-cases of your product. So you can create things like buying guides or long-form information guides that can support the product. You can use tools such as Huballin and Answer the Republic to find inspiration for these kind of ideas. Use a tool like Buzzsumo to find what your competitors are doing and how they're generating links and social shares. I wrote a blog post on this a few months ago which you can read here. I hope that helps! Paddy

  • My reply is.... When we made a couple of pages that had text revealed with a click, those pages were really really big pages, with about 5000 words total.  We just though that it would be easy for the visitor to make a short easy menu with the answers opening with a click.  It was an experiment that I had no intentions of doing other places, because I believe that text behind a click is not seen by lots of people. So, we tried it.  Long tail traffic that was really valuable disappeared. So, now, I put all of my text out in the open where everyone can immediately see it. If I write text (and I write lots of it), I want it to be out there where everybody can see it.  I want them to scroll down the page, see every bit of it, whistle and say "holy smoke".

  • Hey Mike, Nope nothing to worry about. Moz Domain Authority is always jumping an and down. This is how its designed. It shouldn't be compared month to month as the previous month has no bearing on the next. Instead you should judge it on how well you are doing compared to your competitors. Rand posted an article about it this month (https://moz.com/community/q/da-pa-fluctuations-how-to-interpret-apply-understand-these-ml-based-scores) Took me ages to find it... turns out it was pinned to the top of the forums... typical In summary The best website on the web has DA 100. This month they have 5000 links. You are DA  30 and have 1000 links If the following month the best website gains 3000 more links so its at 8000 links - the DA 100 benchmark has moved Compared to this benchmark you are not as authoritative as you were, your DA has dropped you are now DA 25 and still have 1000 links Your site hasn't change and you have no extra links. But compared to the best website you are slightly worse. As long as everyone else in your niche has done the same don't worry. If however, you drop 5 DA and your competitor gains 2 DA. They have improved their link profile much more than you have yours and you should look to act. DA is also affected by changes to the moz algorithm as they prioritise different factors to get a better reflection of how google perceives your website. So the simple rule. Compare yourselves to your competitors not to last months DA alone.

  • Thanks Peter - I didn't know you could do that. I'll pass it on to the developers (who might already know, but wouldn't hurt to reinforce its importance).

  • At this point the interstitial "penalty" only affects mobile sites that show a full screen interstitial to readers. It's not really a penalty, but rather, what Google says is that it can cause a site to lose its "mobile friendly" label which could result in a reduction of rankings. What you are doing is pretty common and wouldn't result in a penalty. However, if it is really annoying to users and causes a lot of people to immediately click away and go back to the Google results then this could possibly negatively impact rankings. This would be a good case for A/B testing to see if you get significantly better user engagement when they don't see the popup. If so, then that's a sign that the popup is too intrusive.

  • Hey Chris, I recently did the same thing, I looked at traffic from organic to the specific pages I changed the meta descriptions for. I did 20 for my top sellers and 20 for my slow sellers and watched for incremental increases YoY and WoW through GA. I did see increases although small, will impact my overall traffic in bulk - I have educated the rest of the business and now we write better meta descriptions. Although your method seems sound and as Matt said ultimately you want to make sure you are converting those people too. All the best, K

  • Thanks Russ Good answer. Yes, I do update quite frequently on some of my sites. Cloudfare does have a button to refresh the cache instantly, but that would mean you would have to go to it every time you made a change. Rod

  • Hey Mark, If it were me- I'd follow Dmitrii's suggestion and fetch as Google after you post it. So long as you aren't doing 500+ more of these a month, I don't see an issue with that. As far as backlinks go, there are some sites (like meetup.com) where you can sponsor posts to get backlinks. Not sure if that would help your case or not-- you could always have your agency host a networking event and start building authority that way. That being said, what is the goal here? Backlinks or getting credit for the content? Because once you post it and index it's yours.

  • I didn't think so, but wanted to double check. Regarding redirects, will I have to change old 301 redirects in our .htaccess file that are setup for individual pages from http to https? Or will the site wide redirect take care of this? Thanks!

  • Yes. Canonical link transfers all the link juice.

  • The most important thing to do is to have generous amounts of informative text.  Lots of people use the same images, you can still have a good website if the text is generous in amount, unique, and meaningful.

  • Perfect thank you all. Bryan you were 90% there, just have to click back to Queries after you go to pages. Thanks all!

  • Hi Alicja, When you say "some of your content," how much do you mean? If brandB copied a paragraph or a few sentences and used it as an intro to a unique piece of content, you should be fine. Google understands that there's naturally going to be some overlap on the same domain. If they copied an entire page, yes, I would recommend using canonical tags, or removing the content. I assume that brandB understands that a canonical tag will mean their version of the page probably won't rank on Google? Best, Kristina

  • This is a long answer To get content to rank you need to have a good plan in place before you write the content and then patience after. Make sure your content is something that people are interested in and are willing to share before you actually write it. Good content actually starts with keyword and viral research. So for example lets say your site sells dog collars. Instead of writing all your content about dog collars, you can think in more broad terms like: Dog collars for training purposes, Things you need to know about puppies, dog skin irritations, do prong collars hurt or help training... Do keyword research to find what these terms can be. (use google ad words to estimate traffic). Next use content explorer from AHREFS to see what content having to do with your keywords has been viral in the last 24hrs to 6 months. For Example: If you type in dog collars it shows that in the past 24 hours an article about "16 things you need to know about getting a puppy." has been shared on Facebook 4.2k times and retweeted 82 times. Narrow your keyword list to the top content ideas. Next go to google, search your new keyword list to see what ranks for the them. Next quickly use Moz Open Site Explorer to check the DA/ PA / and link and spam metrics of the guys on the front page of those results. Try to identify if there are sites you can knock out with a properly optimized piece and some links. Narrow down your keyword list again based on your results and then you can run a keyword difficulty report on Moz. Run a FULL REPORT so you can see all the different variables that makes those sites rank. This can give you a strategy for what you will need to outrank what is already there. Next start to write your content based on what is MOST SHARABLE SOCIALLY, what is MOST ATTAINABLE to rank for, and what shows decent traffic. Make sure you follow proper on page SEO. Use Moz On Page Grader to grade your content while you write it. Check the results. Adjust your content to get the best grade. You should also grade the competitor pages you are trying to outrank to make sure your on page SEO is at least as good or better than theirs. Link Tip: see who the top sites are linking to and link to those resources or better ones. Research in Moz and Ahrefs and Majestic who is linking to the already ranking content. Try to see if there are ways to build links from those same places. Replicate what is making them rank, follows, no follows, as long as they are relevant are good. After you are happy with your content it's time to distribute it. This part is the hard part. Make sure you use Google web master tools / search console to Fetch and Render the new page. Then submit it to index. Start your Social Distribution Campaign by first posting to your sites social media pages. Check your visibility for the article by seeing how much it is shared, liked, retweeted... If you are posting to a businesses Facebook page you can see how many people have viewed the post. You may be surprised to see that not too many people see posts at first due to Facebook's sharing algorithm. There are 2 ways to get more distribution on Facebook, the easy way is pay for it, promote/boost your post or run an add with your post pointing to your content, make sure you target the ad to your preferred audience. The harder way is to get engagement on your post (likes, shares, and comments) in the first hour(s) your post is published. If you run an ad you can track conversions on sales or goals with Faceebook's pixel so that you can see people coming back and purchasing after the first visit. This pixel will also place your post/ad in front of visitors after they leave your site if they did not complete a transaction. Hopefully you can get some traffic from here. Check your web analytics to see what networks sent better traffic. More conversions, more time on site, etc... Based on this data you can invest more time and money in promoting to that network as your target customers are more likely there than on the other networks. Monitor the groups on these networks as well to see if your content can add value to the discussion in the groups. Word of caution DONT SPAM the groups it just looks bad for you in the long run. As with reputation management it is better to already be a part of the Group and have an established presence by sharing valuable content, so when you share content you're affiliated with as long as it adds value it wont be seen as SPAM and you won't get banned. To see if Google has indexed your new page do a site:websiteURL search and check to see if your new page is listed. Next search your target keyword and synonyms to see where you rank for those. Record your position. Next you can use google to look for outreach points. Sites you can contact to do traditional link building. If your content is original and adds value to the conversation you have a better chance at getting good links. Don't worry if you don't get too many, this can be really hard depending on what you are writing about. Check your Google Results positions regularly. (I do it every morning and again throughout the day). Track your results and keep doing competitive research. As you learn more of what your competitors are doing, repeat your outreach process to get more exposure. If you are a site with low authority you can have the most amazing content and still have trouble ranking or getting traffic. For example in the hair product space, L'Oreal will always have an easier time ranking a page than a small hair care brand. It can be done but it is a harder job because of the trust google places on Authority. To help rank less authority sites you need social presence and social importance. Hope this helps. Make sure you track all of this in a spreadsheet of some sort, so the next time you launch a new piece of content you can just follow a blue print. MOZ's white board Fridays cover how to do a lot of this and Ahrefs has a great series called over simplified SEO that talks about all this in easy to understand terms. Let me know if you have any questions. Best, Erick

  • Hi there. I never worked or heard about this company. However, very easy way to check if company is any good with their SEO services is to see how they rank for related keyphrases. So, that's what i did - using MOZ's rank tracker i checked their domain for three seo related keyphrases - seo denver, ppc denver and social media marketing denver - they are not in top 50 for any of these keyphrases. I understand that this industry is competitive, but if they can't make themselves rank on first 5 pages - something is wrong. Therefore I personally wouldn't go with them. Hope this helps.

  • Hi, I'm new to MOZ and I love the tools. I run a couple of websites that I have optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin. Yoast tells how many keywords and if it's enough or to less. In my case all websites meet the Yoast credentials. Now I'm running each page through MOZ and I got all A grades which is great, but many pages I have keyword stuffing. If the article is 2000 words or just 800, it's the same error. Yoast counts words/keywords depending on the length of the article. I don't see this within MOZ and I doubt if an article is 2000 words I can't use the keyword 20 times, that's just 1% but MOZ tells me stuffing. Would also like to learn more about this. Oscar

  • It causes "duplicate content issues" in the sense that only one is likely to appear in search results if you do both. Given that Linkedin is probably more authoritative it's more likely to show up, but it just depends. It won't be a "penalty" necessarily - especially if your author name is on both. If the goal is just a lot of views, go for it. If you're trying to build the site you should probably prioritize the site. Generally I'd recommend posting first to the site, making sure it's indexed, and then cross-publishing or cross-promoting if you don't see a lot of traction with it. But that's just because I'm generally trying to build my sites, and not LinkedIn. As I said, there are probably more views to be had on LI, but it may not accomplish site goals.
