  • "Canibalization is when the same page, competes for several keywords." This statement is incorrect. One of the many articles that you can check about it: https://moz.com/ugc/how-to-keep-keyword-cannibalism-from-robbing-your-sites-performance

  • If you can get a developer to create a list of all the pages Google has crawled within a date range then you can use this python script to check if the page is indexed or not. http://searchengineland.com/check-urls-indexed-google-using-python-259773 The script uses the info: search feature to check the urls. You will have to install Python, Tor and Polipo for this to work. It is quite technical so if you aren't a technical person you may need help. Depending on how many URL's you have and how long you decide to wait before checking each URL, it can take a few hours.

  • You should avoid redirection chains; ask your programmer to redirect http://www.colocationamerica.com/dedicated_servers/linux-dedicated.htm directly to https://www.colocationamerica.com/linux-dedicated-server. There is no need to have the step in between (it's just wasting crawl time of the bots)

  • Never seen this, doubt it's any useful as this isn't part of any search engines recommended statements to use. I don't think this would have any impact on what search engine robots would look at as it's not a statement in the robots.txt documentation.

  • It might work, but eventually Google will catch on. If the site gets penalized for it, trying to get the ranking back up is a pain.

  • Hi Rob, Thanks for the reply and helping hand. We are "crm" industry players. We are globally relevant. Product used globally and website has global visitors across different countries. We don't have any dedicated pages to any country. English language website. There are many internal redirects. And some sub-domains redirected as sub-folders. Reclaimed links sources are not from India/US. Mostly from Europe. Our domain is based in Germany. If you are Okay with private messages, I can send you more details. Please let me know what you need to know more. Thanks, Satish

  • That robots.txt should be fine.. its not blocking anything. The reason the crawl is stopping on the homepage is this code: <meta name="<a class="attribute-value">robots</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">nofollow</a>"> Which tells bots to not follow any links on the page. Remove that and you should be good.

  • Hi Cassie, I would agree with the article - I have been doing this for months now. In fact, I have found that accordion content not only improves UX but also SEO - since Google can read all information on tabs/accordion layouts now, you can put a heck of a lot more information above the fold for better UX and for improved SEO (since tab titles and content give you options for relevancy and semantic keywords). My favourite uses for this are in the e-commerce industry, since ranking product pages or category pages can be extremely tricky, especially if you or your client want to use duplicate content. Content placement can be difficult to decide on, but accordions and tabs give you the option to front-load your content without forcing your visitors to scroll for an era to find your products. Long story short, tabs and accordions improve UX (all information present, but visitors choose what to view) and SEO (easier relevancy, answer all questions for better user metrics, decrease bounce rates, etc.). Every time I have used this strategy it has resulted in ranking improvements and better user metrics on GA. I would try split testing it for yourself if you are still unsure - try using this method for 1 page with similar metrics to another page on your website. Track both pages for rankings, drop-off rates, etc. and see which works better. Hope this helps and feel free to reach out if you have further questions or need clarification! Cheers, Rob

  • Thanks for the response. Users are not actually spamming but using our pages as their platform. But the keywords are spammy keywords in internet world. Those pages are ranking good for certain keywords. So, I am confused whether to delete the spammy content pages or let it them being well-ranked pages.

It then could be another site on the same Magento install with different shopping cart extensions. I really appreciate your help. Thanks.

  • Thanks for the tips but I would love to know if you have any experience with receiving a penalty and not recovering your rankings even a year later. Also, its quite confusing that the DA is not bad!  Is that a symptom of a bigger issue?

  • The only other thing I would suggest is to hang onto the domain names. Don't let the registration lapse so they can be picked up by others.
