  • yes that's right but getting content on your own site is a case where we are getting fresh content on our site which is a ranking factors in Google but getting a link from another site though blogs is a different thing.

  • use it for cross navigational purposes only (user experience) don't use it for SEO or you'll get penalized if you're passing page juice. Nofollow all of them by default if you need to interlink, better you don''t interlink them.

  • Nice interpretation Robert on DA & PA. I think PA varies time to time where domain has already gain its authority 90+ to let marketers to join with them with their best researched content !

  • Hi James, Everyone has their own view of Google and what interacting with them might mean. My personal view is that anyone who thinks they are clever enough to fly under the radar when everything they do is aimed at making themselves visible in Google is probably mistaken. often people have said that this just raises an alarm bell to google if not totally necessary? If you are seeing keywords that have dropped below page 100 in the SERPs, I would think those alarm bells have long since rung. Sha

  • Just look at the kind of keywords people use to hit your internal / deep pages from Search. Specially your brand keywords and you could target some of those. Just make sure you are not doing too many of the same kinds of links. You could also do: "My Brand Name" + Red Red + "My Brand Name" Red Widgets at My Brand Name Red Widgets by My Brand Name My Brand Name Red Widgets Red Widgets Partial Brand and so on.

  • Thanks Oleg. I have started putting together some ideas for new content etc and won't be making a links page! I will also try to avoid excessive link exchanging. H

  • Very clear answer: it won't help anything. Your homepage should naturally get so many links that a link in your own footer will make near to no difference at all. It's not worth your time worrying over. Only time you should worry about the links in your footer is if people are having a hard time finding stuff.

  • Ok, thanks.  I'll check into it some more.  I didn't renew the yahoo directory so we'll see how long it stays up.

  • It has changed alot - Your linkbuilding now should be with the goal of getting relevant traffic to your site in a natural looking way (watch anchor texts). So all the old methods still exist as long as your trying ton get traffic to your site from them - I would try to focus on creating great content on your site people would want to send traffic to from around the web and guest posts on sites with audience that may send people to your site. Think more about marketing and relationships then linkbuilding - Hope that helps Ps- seo take longer and is harder post penguin/panda

  • I use Raven Tools for this.  It has a link manager build in that takes a lot of the legwork out of it.  You can also have google analytics automatically populate Raven with new referring links if you choose. It is a commercial solution. However it's a pretty good value one too, especially considering the other tools that you get with an account . www.raventools.com

  • One thing to keep in mind when doling out this kind of advice is that time isnt free. If the cost to do a one off payment on a link is far less than the hourly cost * the number of hours it takes to develop great content, make a new friend and of course the fail rate on that sort of outreach (which is super duper high if you've spent any time doing it) then saying it'll save money is kind of actually not true at all. Not advocating buying links perse but yeah time isnt free.

  • Hi Punit. If you get anyone answering answering your question with a concrete number, be suspicious.  There are just too many variable factors in ranking to give you any kind of concrete number answer to your question. For example. say you are a newer site competing against an older site and you gain a great PR5 inbound link...Well, say your competitor gains a PR7 inbound link the same day. Guess what? You are still behind. You see, it's not just about what your are doing. iI's about what your competitors are doing at the same time. Ok. So that might leave you feeling a bit hopeless. Don't despair! What makes you different from your competitors? Who could you pursue to ear na link from that your competitors most likely couldnt' get? Bammo. That's who you need to pursue. And, IMHO, forget the PageRank. Go after well-written, relevant sites, regardless of PR. Why? Because that's where your people (you know, the people who are most likely to love your site and its products), that's where they are most likely hanging out. Create relationships with THEM and then you got something. I hope this is helpful! Dana

  • Hi Claude. I think this is a great question. I don't think Googlebot, in most cases, can tell the difference between an ad or a link. I say that because I see both the sites I manage and our competitors showing inbound links from sites that, when investigated, often turn out to be banner ads or even Google display ads. If the site you are striking up this relationship is reputable, I wouldn't worry about it. I would ask only one question: Does linking to this site, either via a paid ad that links to a landing page or any other way, hold any value to visitors of your site? Will it do something for them? Will it add to your credibility in their eyes? Will it offer them something? (Even if it;s just information that's relevant to them) ?? If the answer to all of those is no...I wouldn't do it. If the answer to any one of them is yes, I'd do it and I think you'll be just fine. This is just my opinion. I am interested to hear what others have to say about how Googlebot sees paid ads that produce links versus a regular text link scenario. Dana

  • Hi Kristopher, Your question is a good one. If you do not have a physical address in a city, then, no, you should not be using these local platforms. Google and other local directories want actual physical locations in their indexes - not virtual offices, P.O. boxes, etc. Here is the language from Google's Places Quality Guidelines (http://support.google.com/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=107528) that speaks to this: Business Location: Use a precise, accurate address to describe your business location. Do not create a listing or place your pin marker at a location where the business does not physically exist. P.O. Boxes are not considered accurate physical locations. So, anything other than this is a violation of the guidelines, and it's just good sense to represent your business in an accurate and truthful manner on the Internet. That being said, making use of Local SEO if you're an SEO company is somewhat of a moot point as Google stopped showing local results for web design and SEO companies in January of 2010. It is my understanding that this was partly based on their decision that these types of businesses are mainly virtual in nature (whether that's true or not), and also, heavy spamming of the vertical. So, you can't achieve true local rankings for this business model. We've had similar questions here in recent times from Members in the SEO/design fields who want to be able to target numerous cities within a state. From what you've written, I believe this is your goal. Such efforts will have to be solely organic, and the task at hand is to find a reason to create content about your work in various geographic places. For example, you might have a page dedicated to your SEO or design projects for businesses in Buffalo, NY, and another page about your projects for clients in Long Island. You've got to find something really different to say about your work in each locale in order to have a reason to create such pages so that you end up with robust rather than thin or duplicate content. Hope this helps!
