  • Hello, you said: "From Google's perspective a nofollow link means.... "They paid us!". I understand this perfectly, but you are not saying that it's against google policy to get paid for banner ads on our website, right? As long as I have a space dedicated to advertising and I use NOFOLLOW attribute I can sell spaces on my website, right? Thanks a lot!

  • Hi Vikram, That's very odd if the links were removed 4 months ago and are still showing up in OSE. Our index is updated monthly and never uses cached information. And OSE pulls directly from the index. I'd love to check into it more for you if you can give me some examples. If you'd not comfortable putting that information here, you can email me at help@seomoz.org and include all that information. Thanks, let me know. Cheers, Joel.

  • Hi Again, Thanks for clarifying your question. Regarding Yelp, I recommend you read Phil Rozek's recent piece: http://www.localvisibilitysystem.com/2012/08/23/yelp-ranking-factors/ And don't miss the comments section on it. Really good discussion there. As for YP.com and any other IYP, it's a matter of buying your way to the top. Hope this helps!

  • I would think that Google does still crawl these sites (or have just blacklisted them). Therefore, they would still have a negative effect on your client's website. I would recommend taking a look into Google's new disavow tool - you will be able remove the association with bad links. Dr Pete recently wrote a great article on the disavow tool - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/googles-disavow-tool-take-a-deep-breath

  • The days of link building have changed. IMO if the traffic that flows through here is good for the user its worth getting a second link (That is only if you are referencing something that the users will be interested in on your site). The link is not as important as the user that it drives. "Give the people what they want and Google will give you to the people" Donnie Strompf.

  • I am using http://lindexed.com/ and it works smooth, just $20 a month for 1.5 million links is damn cheap as well.

  • I would try and find other sources for building links. By all means use General directories to help keep your Link Profile balanced, but don't focus primarily on them. It is also better if your content is good enough to "attract" links naturally...

  • I would suggest that it would be vertical specific. But, if you are open to spending the money we suggest Yahoo Directory ($299) and Best of the Web (typically 99. to $150.)specifically. As to the dmoz mention, two things: while you can submit to DMOZ, you are not guaranteed to get into it and it often takes time, the second is I am still surprised by the people who utilize noodp, noydir. When you use those meta robots you block anything from those links. The reason for blocking is past based on my experience. I see sites with DMOZ links and they have noodp. (no open directory project - DMOZ). For local, restaurants must be in Yelp, CitySearch, etc. (and some others - I am making a point about given verticals). Always go for the BBB, Chamber of Commerce, etc. if you are a local business as these are high value links. Understand there are rules for each (BBB most cities you must have a site/business up a year, etc.). I think over time we will see more directories like these counting and less of the others. As to the SEOmoz list, it is not bad in my opinion. I think these things are changing as fast as updates from the zoo. (Pandas, Penguins, etc). My hope is that Yellow Pages, Avvo, SuperPages, etc. go straight to, uhhh purgatory. They got in early and they are worthless in my opinion. The bigger issue is when they duplicate the clients content with cut and paste and the client doesn't do business with them. But, they got the early links all over the web and on Places, etc. because people were simply unaware. As long as there are humans who are curating the directories there is the chance they will have value. EDIT: Tate Larson has a list of 7 good ones here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/the-ultimate-top-10-directory-list Hope this helps.

  • Articles should reside on your own blog / site or in specialist sites. For example, it's perfectly acceptable to write an article and become a contributing author on SEOmoz, but if you start adding links to your site, expect to get a slap from Mr RandFish Best way to get your articles out is to share them via Google+, LinkedIn Groups, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Collaborate with others, ask their views and if they would like to contribute to the article. No quick wins any more I'm afraid. Andy
