As far as duplicate content goes, you wuill be fine as long as they have differencet TLDs

I personally believe that it takes a lot of work to keep up with regular blog posts. Especially if you have a lot of product pages you want to build links too. In addition, you will need to build links to your blog, in order for the links from your blog to be worth while. I still believe having a blog for your website is a good idea. The benefits of having it in the subfolder when the the topic is relevant to the main site are clear - another thing to remember is in terms of your marketing/link building work it's much easier to get strong links to your main site and then inner link to your blog/blog posts.
