Changing server location for a global targetted site
Thanks for the reply Theo In my mind it made sence that I should be able to move host to a different country with not too many problems. Most of my other sites are UK based with a UK target audience I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't be rocking the boat too much with a change of country and had it been hosted in a country where there was a decent level of traffic coming from then I'd have not considered thinking of moving it, the German hosting just threw me a curve ball I wanted to make sure I didn't ruin anything. A fast US or UK server does sound like it would be OK to switch to. With regards to a CDN solution, there are no images or such on the site and the pages are very small file sizes so I'm unsure that it would make too much different to the load times, however a very good suggestion and once I get ownership of the site I'll check that that is still the case. With regards to the .info domain, I know it's not ideal but the site I am buying is around 6 years old so I'm just going to have to live with it for this site, had it only been a year or 2 old I'd have given it a bit more thought.

What next to help with my rankings
The key is to make sure your website growth, authority and success is natural. I have personally witnessed a client who has tried to "get to number one in Google" by rushing into activities of obtaining vast numbers of inbound links and ultimately they logged into GWT one day to see a nice message from Google notifying them of the suspicious activity. Keep things simple. Start with fixing any errors within the HTML by running your site through the WC3 validator. I can see you have 8 errors on the homepage. Easily fixable. Then run your site the Y-Slow browser add-on. The page loading time is taken into consideration with search engines. You are currently getting a Grade C - see if you can improve this somewhat. One thing at a time. Oh and remember, its no longer about "being number 1" so much now, its about measuring your goals and conversion rates and determining success that way. Stick some kind of track_pageview onto the "start test" button, then you can compare how many people visit your homepage and also compare how many actually ran the speed test system. The fact that the speed test is the main function of your site suggests you should see that the number of visitors to your homepage should not be too disimilar to the number of people who run the test. If there is a big difference, find out why. Good luck. I got 9mb per second by the way.

NoIndex user generated pages?
Yes, add it to the robots.txt (use a Disallow and a NoIndex statement). I did find that Bing for example has not reliably in the past honoured robots.txt (especially in the case where you have an explicit "index" tag on the page and a noindex for a URL path).

Redirecting a previously expired domain - any SEO benefits?
Hi Wardy, Usually, there would be value to redirect an expired domain, but it depends on the age, what the domain previously held, and whether there is revelance to your new domain. With a 301 redirect, any "link juice" (hate the term, but it's got to be used!) will be passed down the line to your new site, so as long as the link and old domain is valuable, the answer is yes, there would be some slight benefit. Also, check in "open site explorer" to see if there are any other valuable links to your old domain. If there are several valuable links, buy the domain and redirect before someone else buys it. If there's just the one valuable link, write to the site and ask them to amend the destination URL. Hope that helps. Matt
