Do we still have this Page Rank / Link juice / Link equity? So this dilution concept?
Hello, Larger sites tend to rank better than small sites. This is due to many reasons but the larger the site the more information there is for Google to index. Also as long as you are not building pages to deep where they are hard to find and just get lost you should be fine. The quality of the content is what get you traffic. If the content is valuable and relevant to the reader it should generate more traffic and get more inbound links. It is also a good idea to link to the other pages on your site to help spread the PageRank energy around. That way you can help improve the ranking and traffic for pages that may be on the second or third tier of your menu structure. I would not worry too much about the pages per say. I would just concentrate on the quality of the content of the pages. Best Regards

Google treats pages from main website and sub folder/sub directory differently?
Well I do not think there should be much difference as you are talking abut directories in the same website as compared to a Sub-domain like here: cars.website.com flowers.website.com store.website.com When things are in a different directory buy are technically on the same domain they still share in the Domain Authority of the site. The different sub-domain sites could all have different Domain Authority scores from how Google looks at them as far as I know. Best Regards

When Google is going to penalise webpages with autoplaying videos?
Hi Vtmoz, Couldn´t agree more with you, they are a pain in the ... specially when they have sound and i have no idea where the vid is. As Google rolled out there mobile interstitials penalty at the beginning of this year and this is also a usability issue, who knows... Apparantly John Mueller from Google also said he didnt like them and asked if they should penalize. Would surely be a game changer.

38% of SEOs Never Disavow Links: Are you one among them or the other 62%?
Hi VTmoz, We didn´t use to disavow a lot since most clients backlinks were done by us and always stayed clear from the "dark side of the moon". We stopped altogether though after last year pinguin´s 4.0 update.

Ranking drop after image compression across website.
Hi, Thanks for the replies. All the file names and alt texts are almost same. No other changes have been made around the dates. Drop is definitely post the image replacement and directly associated. I am not sure if reverting back to old images will improve rankings anyway. And that's a lengthy job.

Do we need to worry about external redirects?
Hi, For ease of use, I always try to advise that any link is updated if it is clear that it has been redirected, but unless the subject has changed, it really shouldn't make any difference. If you have a link from your site to an article about breeding caterpillars and the target site then change this to something about feeding habits of polar bears, this is a link I would change. Top and bottom line, if the link makes sense, you will be fine. -Andy

Keywords in Paragraphs: How much do they matter at Google?
Hi James Please, can you explain to vtmoz what LSI means as he may not be familiar with the acronym? He was talking about paragraphs, not titles. That much was clear. You have repeated exactly what I told him and it's not clearer. Kind Regards Nigel

Images are Blocked Resources in webmasters. Anything wrong?
You can block an entire subdomain via robots.txt, however you'll need to create a robots.txt file and place it in the root of the subdomain, then add the code to direct the bots to stay away from the entire subdomain's content. User-agent: * Disallow: /

What we can understand from decrease in % of New Sessions year to year in Google analytics.
Hi. Check how your organic traffic compares. If it's farely steady, no reason to worry. It may simply be that your referral traffic has reached its "peak" in terms of new visitors they can send.

Ranking drop after sub domain to sub directory migration. Usual?
Hmmmm - that is interesting then I'd of done exactly what you've done. I take it you mean you're home page has dropped in rankings? Are the sub domains outranking it? How's your internal link structure/navigation back to the home page. As I say I don't think you've done anything wrong - A link building campaign to the home page might benefit you but even then I'd be tempted to ignore it and focus on the sub domains - ask yourself as a user - When was the last time you used a home page as a landing page as opposed to a page that served your specific request?

Do we need to Disallow profiles from discussions or forums?
We have never had to nofollow internal links within any of our websites, I am sure their are some circumstances where you could, but since Google's algorithm no longer "penalizes" links I don't see a need to as they are simply ignored. Just avoid spammy tactics like having 100 links under the footer or a bunch of affiliate links, etc.

Anything wrong in linking to homepage from all sub domain pages?
Not a terrible idea, but it will dilute your root domain link %. Google does give an negative attribute if your site it receiving too many links from a single root domain.

What happens when non-relevant topic is getting more visitors?
Good questions. I would assume it could be due to alot of uniquely generated content in a short amount of time that Google could tell was real and that page probably had a high CTR and Time on Page metrics, etc. Another theory could be that the discussion got linked to or shared somewhere that increased the discussion's thread authority in Google's eyes. It likely would have not ranked high long-term, and Google could have almost treated it like a timely, relevant news story.

Does Google push down for not ranking top for branded keywords?
Hi vtmoz You should definitely have pages that target brand related queries and this is not spam. I don't know what you sell. But you should have 'landing pages' I prefer to call them 'categories' for all the 'things' 'services' or 'product categories' your company covers. Make sure that the pages are tight and succinct, have 300-1000 words content and are highly contextually targetted to the different categories you cover. This is not spam, it is normal site structure and you will not be penalised. Regards Nigel

Google's stand on LSI keywords?
Hi vtmoz, It's very common for Google to change its algorithm in response to user trends. The thing to remember is that users have different forms of intent when they use certain words or phrases, and Google is constantly altering their ranking methods to reflect this. While LSI keywords tend to remain static, there can be alterations and shifts within the industry or in how people observe and interact with it. However, these changes would not necessarily occur because companies begin using them more frequently. More likely, Google is dipping into its reservoir of big data to determine that user queries leading to certain pages were not producing user satisfaction (i.e. bounce metrics were high on pages that were previously identified as supplying relevance via LSI keywords) and therefore made a change to better reflect what users were searching for (and interacting with) from their SERPs. A couple of questions to ask: Has anything changed within your industry that would cause an LSI keyword shift? (new products, new competitors, new rules and regulations, etc?) Is there a pattern in terms of the keywords that have changed? Is it industry-wide or a specific segment? Are there new ways users may be interacting with the industry? New queries being used? What is the impact on your rankings for general terms related to those LSI terms/phrases? Based on the answers to these questions, you can better identify whether it's a shift from Google altering the LSI algorithm for your industry, or simply an indicator of a developing industry. My guess is the latter. Hope this helps - feel free to reach out any time if you need a clarification or just want to chat! Thanks, Rob

Does the blog widget with latest blog-posts at homepage helps in SEO?
It can certainly help. If your blog titles contain keywords that you want the site to rank for, then by having this widget you will be giving another source of information that contains your keywords on your Homepage. It can also reduce your bounce rate which in turn is great for SEO. If someone sees the blog title and thinks "that sounds interesting" and clicks it - they are interacting with your site, and this is a big thumbs up! My advice would be to make sure your blog titles contain strong industry keywords and this could certainly help your SEO.

Best way to handle outdated & years old Blog-posts?
I can tell you what we do. With over 35 000 posts we are always tweaking the better ones and dropping the dead weight. I'm currently going through a bunch of posts from 2010. I run two quick tests on them - I check the PA [page authority] on Moz. If it's 1 then that's one strike, anything higher I consider working on the post. Next is a quick check in Google Analytics for traffic over the past 6 months. As you can imagine many posts from 7 years ago have 0 traffic. This is strike 2 and in my ballpark, 2 strikes means 'you're out!'. I delete the posts, a hard 404. As we cut the driftwood from our nets I feel we will be more efficient at catching more fish.
