301 passing authority?
Hi there, I need to clarify that 301 redirections, definitely pass authority. That's not even a discussion. As you are asking about merging (I guess) 3 smalls websites into a fourth and big one, that's a really tricky question. It depends on many other factors, some are: Content matching Answering user questions Brand relationship In my experience, doing this kind of merging is a messy process and in many cases, it ends up losing some of the previous rankings/traffic already gained by the small websites. I'd suggest you focus on improving the main website and, if applicable link to that page from the small websites. If that overlap is harming your sales, your brand strategy or other marketing efforts, then you should act accordingly. But if these websites are different identities and by themselves bring sales, that overlapping might be beneficial for you in not letting competitors rank there ;). Hope it helps, Best luck!

Anchor Text to Rank for a Keyword
If you are using anchor text that is not on the landing page it sends mixed signals to the search engine. Remember that search engines are just complex directories trying to give the user the most relevant result. If your keyword doesn't match the page it's linking to then the likelihood is it will lose its relevance equalling a lower authority signal and lower SERP. If you are using a relevant keyword for anchor text then you can weave it into the landing page. Hope that helps

Back links with instant effect?!
Hi there, IMO, the site that has more traffic, more relevancy and more authoritative, will be the one effects the quickier. That said, you could go testing with all black hat methods, it's known that most of them works for a really short period of time. I'm in no position to recommend any Im against that practices. Hope it helps. Best luck. GR

Canonicalization
Hi Mike, That new tool is very revealing and supports my experience that you can't dupe Google into ranking a different page just by canonicalization. Thanks! Nigel

Ranking fluctuation
I believe fluctuations occur because of competition for the target terms. Are you regularly measuring your site to your competitors? I record our position, links, PA/DA monthly with our to 10 competitors, this provides great insight for the "why's" I encounter with our SERP. Hope this helps. KJr

Page dropped after backlink
The odd thing is before adding the link, the first keyword was position 11 the second was position 12. The first one boosted up to the first page, the second one has dropped to the third page!

Penalty for duplicate content on the same website?
Your ranking will be decreased. It is better to use canonical URL to avoid duplicate contents in your website.

Footer no follow links
I usually use nofollow for links that point to pages like "Privacy policy" or "Legal advice", and noindex in those pages. I don't do it for authority, I do it for duplicated content, this pages a lot of times have very similar content to the same pages in other sites.

Is anyone seeing excessive ranking fluctuations?
SEMrush Position tracking is showing a lot of false flux lately for a couple of reasons. 1) They don't identify your position in the SERPs and report it as "not in top 100". If you click to see the cache that they used to obtain the rankings your domain is there. 2) Google has been inserting and removing a link to the image results at the top of many SERPs. "Images for [your query]" When present, SEMrush is counting this link to the image results as position #1 and the result is all results below are pushed down one position. When not present, all of the results below move up one position. You don't notice this very much in your visibility score if you are on the second page. However, if you have keywords that rank in the top three or four it can make a huge change in your visibility score. 3) Google does seem to be experimenting a bit and even losing track of a few pages for the keywords that they typically rank for. So, yes there is a little more flux in Google, but the number changes in many of the tools are a result of contaminated data and bad data collection.

How is DA and PA calculated?
I am also curious about DA and PA. My website Carpet Cleaner Picks DA is 2 while PA has reached upto 25. PA is increasing constantly since the launching of the website while DA stands still. Why is that? Secondly, I am also curious if DA or PA has any effect on the rankings.

New page disappeared from the ranks, under dubious circumstances
Hi seoman10, This is not odd. Give it a few days in order to rank for some keywords. I'd say a week as a prudent amount of time. Hope i've helped. Best luck. GR.

Link building - anyone use this technique?
Hi there, Thanks for the question! As Nigel said, it is a risky tactic if you're doing this kind of thing at scale, so I'd definitely echo what he said about being careful. There are legitimate ways of linking multiple sites that you own together - publishers will often link all of their magazine sites together - but the way you've described it doesn't fit with this. It may well work for a short period, but if it's clearly been done for SEO purposes then it will most likely catch up with you at some point! Hope that helps! Paddy

Google disavow file
To the best of my knowledge Google will read it pretty regularly (every day/several days). However, Google takes several weeks until the disavow request is processed

ALT tags - How important are they?
Hi seoman10 answering your question They are important, but I think they are not even in the TOP 20 of the priorities when you rank a site, for me the most iportant factor are Content Backlinks Mobile-First User Experience Other Technical Factors To support my point of view you can check the 200 ranking factors from backlinko and Image Optimization is in the 24 position. "24. Image Optimization: Images on-page send search engines important relevancy signals through their file name, alt text, title, description and caption." Optimize the ALT tags can give you a better score but will not give thousands of visitors. In the other hand a good link mixed with agreat content can give you that traffic. When you are making an onpage optimization is really good idea to put your main keywords or releated keywords in the images and those ALT tags must be related to the topic of your article but is very usual that you will have a lot of images without ALT tag, such as icons, ads, backgrounds and Im sure that they will not hurt your SEO Sources Search Engine Journal Backlinko

No-follow Links - Do they work for SEO?
Alick3000 is correct. I would not strictly pursue getting nofollow links, but if there is an opportunity to get one and it could help with getting your brand name our there or driving referral traffic to your website, it definitely won't hurt! If you are also actively building links on a monthly basis, it is probably a good idea to have a few that are nofollow in your link profile
