Ah. As outlined above by EGOL the separate subscription model should do well. Plus you'll be keeping inbound links within the blog as a whole so that should help with gains.

I'd definitely consider adding a review section on each page for the quality of the information, something along the lines of what "who called me" sites do. That way you're getting user generated content around how quickly they were able to get a hold of someone and how it helped resolve their issue. That would be a value add and help differentiate the pages. Cheers!

Thumbs up that Dirk's analysis of the site speed should probably be your largest concern. I've seen several new sites really struggle to initially rank if they're in the red on those scores. 21 / 25 are really bad. Do everything you can to quickly get those in the green and you should start to appear in the rankings. This, along with Google's stance on only indexing mobile sites that have high mobility scores are two trends that aren't going away.

Thumbs up. EGOL has solid advice on this. There's a lot of cross over between marketers and designers so a blog with both types of content (and talking about their intersections) wouldn't bother me in the least. Would be pretty cool in fact!

For internal linking you should try to be as precise as possible. You can also freely control the anchor text of the links so if you're talking about a specific product, link to that specific product. Google has enough data to know when you link to a page and the content it should be finding is not there (as may be the case with some of your home page links). I would clean up any and all internal links that don't point to the best page, either deleting ones that just don't apply or pointing them to very specific products.
With external links it can vary. A lot of times people link to the home page when mentioning the company, while some sites garner a lot of product specific links (eBay, Amazon, Craigslist, etc.) due to the nature of their content. Wikipedia would be another example. Using OSE you can find some great ideas around how the competition has built links, but also some really spammy examples. Avoid the spam and make it a goal that when you do add a link to a page or work with someone interested in linking to your site, that the link is as user helpful as possible. Think of the link or mention from a conversion perspective more than as a way to help your rankings and you'll be much better off. Cheers!

That's really difficult to say without looking at more precise details, although my hunch is that other marketing efforts should have been able to overcome an algorithmic change like ownership tags. More than ownership though Google has been moving towards offering a diversity of results so if the two websites are on the same domain that could be at play. Also increasing during that period of time are localization and personalization with the results so global competition could be gaining on your sites while yours remains unchanged.
To really break it down you'll want a professional looking at:
- Analytics - What referral trends have been at play, what wins have not been replicated recently
- Webmaster Tools - Any warnings that have gone addressed? Are we responsive? Mobile?
- Diversity of results - Are some of our big past traffic generating results no longer showing up? Maps? Images? Video? etc.
And many more. I think really having success with just a couple of those aspects would get you plenty of organic results.

If you want to test this, identify a section of your site that you can disallow via robots.txt and then measure the corresponding changes. Proceed section by section based on results. There are so many variables at play that I don't think you'll get an answer that's anywhere as precise as testing your specific situation.

Not exactly. You can however infer some traffic amounts when you're tracking keyword rankings against competitors in a Moz Analytics campaign. You can also get a good idea of how much engagement or traction a competitor is getting from social via tools here as well. Fresh Web Explorer is great tool for the News side this question--tracking sites that are writing about brands, topics, and so on. There's a decent comparison and test on Quantcast and others here: http://moz.com/blog/testing-accuracy-visitor-data-alexa-compete-google-trends-quantcast. Just remember, you'll never know the true numbers unless you have server logs and analytics access.

Hi Pete. I wouldn't attack this problem solely through PR measurements, rather I'd try to use as much usability data as I could as well; mainly, how are people interacting with your site? This can be done via Google Analytics, heat mapping and click tracking software like Crazy Egg or Optimizely, or using actual in-person user testing. (These and other tools here: http://www.conversion-rate-experts.com/understanding-your-visitors/) What you're trying to come up with is how much do those 150 links really help or hinder people. It could very well be that less is more.

Email links are fine in either style. I wouldn't remove this one from a usability perspective, and you can try using other styles as well (feel free to nofollow it though).
4) You should keep the footer links as well for usability and trust, check within Analytics to see if you're getting much traffic to these pages. You might be surprised that one of them is doing well for search. Also make sure the design on these pages lends itself well to exploring other parts of your site.

RE: Domain branding and such
Ah. This explains a bit more about your previous questions. If possible you need to make sure that your client gains ownership over his older domain. Without access to the Registrar rights you're not going to be able to edit the nameserver and registry information to show that he owns it as well as do the necessary server side work to control the old domain.
Wherever the old domain name is currently registered you'll need to contact them and inquire about the process regarding gaining complete ownership of the domain. Since your client is a lawyer he can probably be pretty persuasive in this area.

Is the established website staying active? Or is he moving all business to the new website? If the latter, feel free to update citations as well as redirecting to the new site. If he's keeping both websites and they're different businesses, you'll have to treat the new one as a separate entity and go through the process of developing its marketing and SEO from scratch. Keep the old citations pointing to the original site, and work on developing new ones for the new site. Cheers!

It could add a bit of uniqueness, but probably not to the level of every word from the PDF being associated with the with the page that it's embedded on. Still, if the PDF is highly relevant to the page where it's embedded it's a positive factor for the page overall.

This can vary pretty substantially based on a number of factors, but losing organic traffic for a a couple of months would be on the high end of delays and cause for concern towards the tail end of that time. The obvious problem would be that their website address hasn't been verified and linked to their Google + profile... Linking them together in GWT and Analytics would help too. After checking those things I'd check other settings, like use Google + as site.
