Good question. I was only thinking of implementing it at home page level or as you suggest across the site but pointing to the root. I guess at this stage a lot of it depends on speculation about the impact of +1 and your website design.

P.S. While on the subject of +1 has anyone had any success with it so far? In terms of visitors using it.

I don't believe so no.

I think people are adopting it early in the hope that it will be widely used and either increases CTR or it will be used as a 'social signal' ranking factor in the future.

I think II may have been slightly confused by thinking the default for www.mydomain.com/ was not iindex.html

I was under the impression that www.mydomain.com/ and www.mydomain.com/index.html were both indexing but are the same page

I think in that particular situation I would use 301 as there really isn't a separate use for the /index.html page

Depending on the size of the site I would start look at the 'static pages' (Services, about us etc) and categories (as Alan mentions). These pages can allow you to rank for the broader match terms which usually have decent traffic amounts before going on the the daunting task of writing unique content for products (again as Alan mentions).

Its just my opinion but directories cant really harm you because a competitiors could just submiut you in them if so.

I usually use the SEOMoz tool bar and only submit to directories that have a decent authority.

Just don't use any mass submitter tools for this, or well research them if you intend too.

Personally I still use directory submissions and they do have great results but it really depends on what stage your website is at.

For a new site I believe directory submissions are very useful in climbing the initial ranking and getting indexed, however very established sites wont get a lot of benefit from them.

If they refuse to take it down we would adopt Lewis-SEO idea first, seems like the easiest and quickest route.

It's a shame situations like this arise really and there is no official way to deal with it. We wouldn't really go down the blackhat route but it is a good stick to use as an for them to stop.

That was an interesting read on the link (why would anyone refuse links in their T&Cs!?)

Thanks Tompt, ill check out those links to see what can be done but like you say I guessed the legal route would likely be costly although we may have to do it if he starts climbing up the rankings quickly.

Lewis-SEO contacting the webhost is a good idea, I have got their details and may give it a go.

As a quick update since posting originally our MD spoke to their owner who said he will consider taking it down on the threat of us doing the same to them (as we have more resources and with them having a unique, none keyword, name I guess that isnt a route they would choose) <seo wars="">:)</seo>

Just did another whois from a different site using the domain name and the Registrant field states our competitors company name.

Guess we will have to call them and see what their reasoning is.

Do you know if there is anything you can do against a copycat website?

By copycat I mean a website which uses our brand / domain name to steal our brand traffic.

The reason I ask is a new site recently launched with which is optimised to take some of our brand traffic:

Site tile - www.my<ourbrandname>.co.uk</ourbrandname>

Description - For when I need <ourbrandname></ourbrandname>

They gave no physical address or email addresses to funnel customers through an enquiry form which got me suspesious so when I checked the IP address in the MOZ Toolbar and did a WhoIs check on the IP address it brought up one of our main competitors websites.

Anyone got an experiences of this and know what can be done?

Thanks for the response, I guess it answers my question in the way that if we want to rank for more key phrases we use a page specifically for the new key terms and SEO that as we have done with the home page.

I know the one page per search term is the general SEO rule and I agree with it, however I have got us from page 3 to page 1 top 5 for 3 very competitive key terms and I am afraid if I optimise the homepage on just one of these terms and 'move' (on page optimise) the other two terms on new pages then we would loose the ranking of these on the main page?

Might sound like a bit of a daft question to you pro's but here it goes...

I am been doing in house SEO for a company for a short while and since I have been managing it things have moved quickly in the right direction but I find myself limiting our SEO efforts to three key terms. Is this usual?

The reason I am doing this is because I find that on page SEO is only really possible with those amount of terms (with regards to title, description, key word density, seo copy, on page links etc).

I guess that what I trying to stay is:

1. If I push on page opitimastion to more key terms will it be detrimantal to our current efforts?

and

2. Is SEO possible for additional key phrases which are not on page optimised?

I am really interested in this too. I personally agree with much of what you say. I keep the icons at the bottom of the page, dont show user amount or details - just keep them as basic as possible really!

I have used a number of WP plug ins but not found one I really like yet. Some look stylish but are really too in your face. It would be interesting to here which ones people recommend...

To go one step further on this topic, which social media do people show? Obviously there are hundreds out there but in terms of making the webpage readable and usable which do you normally go for? I tend to pick the typical email, twitter, fb, digg, stumbleupon and not too many others.

Seems like a pretty smart move on their behalf to steal brand traffic and I am sure there are countless cases of this happening.

As far as being illegal I would say this is not the case. From my understanding of what you have said they do actually sell the products which your client supplies to them on a wholesale basis, if they didn't sell the products for which they have used your brand term to steal traffic it may be a different case although I am still not sure it would be worth pursuing.
