Not sure why it gets downloaded. Should be a perfectly normal .txt file.

I doubled checked in Google Webmaster tool and from the it says the robots.txt file can be read.

Any idea how to remove the download?

Using SiteExplorer we managed to find a large number of weird polish sites ranking to our site.

Actually most of them does not on purpose link to our site. They seem to be scraping content from wikipedia articles and our link happens to be in the article about Sweden.

A typical links looks like this

http://www.xn--wiey-katalog-mlc97b.kepno.pl/kalmarunionen.php?title=Sverige

Today we took a HUGE drop in rankings and I had some suggestions that these polish links might have something to do with it.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Anyone seen anything similar before?

We have all read about the dangers of over optimizing our sites. Specially in regards to the latest google update.

Every time we created a new landing-page we typically made sure that the page get an A-grade using the SEOmoz On-Page Optimization tool.

Does this mean its not a good idea to do this?

Maybe aim for a less perfect score?

Darn, those links has not been built with my companies knowledge. Two quick questions:

1. Is there any way to remove them from Googles index in such away that even if they link to us they do not affect us?

2. If Google has lost trust in the domain due to these weird backlinks or any other factor, should I not be able to see that in a dropping pagerank or page authority?

As of today we got huge drops in SERP across all our pages. We can see a drop between 10 to 80% on most of our pages on this domain:

Some background info:

• Never bought any links
• Yes, did optimize the site, but only in fair way, using SEO moz On-Page Optimization. Most pages get an A-grade
• No cloaking, all pages do look exactly same to visitors and Google

Any input on what this could be?

We are hugely grateful for any input that might lead us in the correct direction

Yes, its google.dk that we are targeting.

Links always helps and for sure we are working on that. Its just that this particular page is ranking so far beyond the others are they don't really have more links pointing to them.

Hi all

We are building, managing and marketing a Danish tourism site for VisitSweden. The site targets a Danish market-group with information and travel tips on going to Sweden.

We have one page in particular that has always failed to rank well for some reason.

This page targets the keyword "Malmø".

Another page, with similar layout and content seems to rank alot better.

Any ideas? Smart tips?

My opinion is that having the key words in the URL definitively does not harm your ranking. Dependent on if its a very broad keyword or long tail keyword it might help more or less.

If you have a technical solution making it easy to create URLS with any name then why not.

Just make sure that if you do change the keyword focus of a page, be careful not to change the URL or you will loose your pagerank.

Most CMS now do an automatic 301 when you change the URL but even so it will take time to get the old pagerank back.

Also, like Istvan mentiones, some people actually do remember URLs instead of bookmarking them, so having too long and odd URLs might not be such a good idea.

Hi

Why not either strip away or add trailing slashes on all your URLs? This way you are sure to get around the problem.

If you add something similar to this, it will for example remove trailing slashes on all URLs:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^.yourdomain.com$ [NC]

RewriteRule ^(.+)/$ http://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]

Lets say I produce the raw content, you know any good online service that can take that and apply your point 1 -4 on it?

We are mostly writing our own article but need a helping hand proof reading and putting the final touch on the articles.

If you look at this page http://www.meresverige.dk/rejser/malmoe, it should do a 301 redirect to the new one. Does the redirect look ok to you?

About 2 months ago one of our clients renamed a section of his website.

The worst part is that the URLs of the page also changed.

New page:

http://www.meresverige.dk/rejser/malmo

Old page:

http://www.meresverige.dk/rejser/malmoe

The problem now is that the new page get absolutely no page-rank transfered from the old page. It also get no mozrank at all.

Also if I try to find it in the Open Site Explorer it can not be found.The old page can, but not the new one.

We have updated the sitemap.xml and also done proper 301 redirect for the pages since about 2 months.

Any ideas here? This page was a very important page in terms of traffic so very much thankful for any input.

We have now added the preferred domain in Google.

I was a bit suspecting this but not sure. When I did a site:meresverige.dk i only get results with www.meresverige.dk so I thought Google had figured it out.

I will wait for a week or two more and see how it goes.

As for the redirects of the /malmoe to /malmo without the www i agree this is weird. It does not show in OSE at all. But when I use firebug I can see it redirects as it should. Have you seen this before?

We did proper 301s for all pages, the main page and all pages under this in the structure.

Your suggestion is to add a few links from other root domain to the new page url to speed things up?

For various reasons some of our pages were renamed from:

http://www.meresverige.dk/rejser/malmoe

to:

http://www.meresverige.dk/rejser/malmo

We have made proper 301 redirects and also updated sitemap.xml accordingly. The change was done about 5th of September. The content on the pages remain identical.

This page, and all pages below it in the structure now get very low or no page-rank at all. Much lower than it was before the name change.

Any ideas to how long, if ever, it will take for Google to transfer the page-rank from the old page?

Any suggestions to what we can do to make the process faster?
