Note of caution: I wouldn't put these links in the footer, sidebar or anywhere else which will mean the links would be present on every page of the site. A sudden rise in the quantity of sitewide links could set off alarm bells for search engines.

Often a homepage ranks better than internal pages for the reason you suggest, more links (and probably other things). And yes, internal linking can help. Does it make sense to link to one of your internal pages from your home page? You are talking about the blue widgets, so you link to the blue-widget page? If you are worried about tanking all of your ranking, pick just one of the keywords you think is being cannibalized and try working on only that one at first.

Are you running Wordpress? Do you have the Yoast SEO plugin? Key to being ranked well is how good the article is, backlinks and some debate over how much impact social signals are having. -Andy

We actually have 2 nearly identical ecommerce websites, with identical product descriptions, and prior to us doing a cross-domain canonical, we would frequently have both sites ranking in the top 20 for a keyword. The cross domain canonical really helped - massive rankings increase.

Hi Tom, I guess if you used a /blog sub-folder, any links to individual posts will pass juice down to the main /blog landing page. If you go for the /blog-name URL, juice will be spread across the whole domain.

If you've got viagra spam pointing at your site you likely won't be able to remove them.  So should you disavow?  Disavowing a nofollowed link won't accomplish anything as disavowing is simply asking Google not to count the link and a nofollow link is already not being counted.  However, when you have loads of nofollowed links from spam attacks this is one situation where I often do go ahead and disavow these.  The reason for this is that one tactic that spammers can use is to point a bunch of nofollowed links at a site and then one day turn them all to followed.  If you've got them disavowed then you've got that covered. Also, if you have viagra links pointing to your site, make sure you don't have a hack within your site.  Try doing a google search for site:yourdomain.com viagra and see what comes up.
