Go to Permalink Settings under SEO.

And Set:

Redirect attachment URL's to parent post URL. Attachments to posts are stored in the database as posts, this means they're accessible under their own URL's if you do not redirect them, enabling this will redirect them to the post they were attached to.

I agree with Nathan on the canonical tag. You could also work with your developer back end system and look into configuration issues and see if there's a way for the application to always have a consistent product level URL. It's the same product. It's being exposed in multiple categories or multiple levels of categories. Regardless, it's the same product. There's no reason for them to be unique product URLs. See if you can work with them to get rid of the root cause.

If not, canonical is definitely the way to go. Unfortunately, there's isn't another way like robots.txt exclusions etc that should be considered.

How big is your website ? How many pages are you talking ?

If you get a considerable search traffic, and are ranking well in the search engines, I would strongly advise to ensure each one of your pages redirects to your new .cfm counterpart. There's a lot of advantage in doing that and a absolutely no reason why you shouldn't do it. You know that, and that's why you have been researching and finally posted this question.

You need to work with your programmers and make sure each page is being 301 redirected. I would suggest keeping the redirects almost indefinitely for now. It's definitely not 1, 2 or 3 months. Although, in a couple years, you could remove the links, but then if it does not hurt, it's best to keep them.

As per OSE, you have a total of 6 Linking Root Domains for your 1st site and 7 Linking Root Domains for your 2nd site. It's clear that you need more domain authority. I would continue to build some great content and great links to your site so that your overall domain authority increase for your domain/website to be competitive.

Sebastian, as long as the page you have a link in Google's cache, I would not worry about it. Further you said they appear in GWT, that's perfect. You need the SE's to be able to find the link and their cache of that page should have the link. As long as that's the case, don't worry about which tools found it and which didn't. There's an infinite amount of content on the web that is growing by the second. It's technically impossible for any bot or spider to make sure they index the entire web at a 100%. I would suggest not to get frustrated but to continue to build your website content and links so that you continue to improve.

Check to see if your customers like the videos. Check in Youtube Analytics to see the stats and if people are indeed using your videos, watching them full length etc. If they are, it might make sense to include them somewhere on the page, as a video thumbnail and open a modal window with the video or something like that. You might then also want to look into doing a Video XML sitemap.

404's in Google Webmaster Console show for 90 days (Even though I have seen then appear for longer). In my opinion, if for the user, it's a good experience for them to be redirected to a better page or a sitemap or homepage or an upper level category page, do that. But if it does not make sense for the user, don't do it.

Just don't have active 404 links within your website. If there are external links pointing to old pages, redirect those to maximize the user experience and SEO value of those links and traffic coming from those. Other then that, I would not worry about it.

If you go to the URL where your directory listing is on dir.yahoo.com, and check the Google cache for that page, is that page cached ? When was it cached ? And do you see your URL on the cached version of that page ? If yes, you are getting the credit for it. You may or may not see it on OSE, because OSE only crawls a portion of the web.

Does that link show up in your Google Webmaster Console Links ? If yes, in either the cache or GWC or both, you are good and no need to worry.

I agree with John. Use that .htaccess code. Apart from that, I'd also recommend that you setup your preferred way in Google Webmaster Console under Configuration > Preferred domain.

The canonical solution you have implemented is perfect. If you have decent authority and get deep crawls every couple days, you should be fine and pages from your IP should start to disappear shortly.

Let's Say I come in searching for reviews for ABC Web Hosting. Why would I leave a review ? What's my reason to post a review on a random website ? Is there an incentive of doing that ? I would suggest you brainstorm as if you are the user. What attracts you the most ? Maybe building a community ? Giving them a value. Something.

I agree. These kinds of sites with similar link profiles mushroom towards the top of the SERPS all the time. But then as Google catches up with algorithm updates and applying them to their indexes, those kinds of sites disappear for ever.

Use Screaming Frog or another crawler and do a complete On-page Audit for your site to make sure. I hope this helps.

Great question Dan. @Jesse, you are on the right track. I think the question was misunderstood.

The question is, if seomoz.org links to Amazon.com/nakulgoyal and that page does not exist, is there link juice flow ? Think about it. It's like thinking about a citation. If seomoz.org mentions amazon.com/nakulgoyal, but does not actually have the hyperlink, is there citation flow.

So my question to the folks is, is there citation flow ? In my opinion, the answer is yes. There's some DA that will get passed along. Eventually, the site owner might identify the 404, "which they should" and setup a 301 redirect from Amazon.com/nakulgoyal to whatever pages makes most sense for the user, in which case there will be a proper link juice flow.

So to clarify what I said:

• Scenario 1:
  SiteA.com links to SiteB.com/urldoesnotexist - There is some (maybe close to negligible) domain authority flow. from siteA.com to siteB.com (Sort of like a link citation). There may not be a proper link juice flow, because the link is broken.

• Scenario 2:
  SiteA.com links to SiteB.com/urldoesnotexist and this URL is 301 redirected SiteB.com/urlexists - In this case, there is both a authority flow and a link juice flow from SiteA.com to SiteB.com/urlexists

**That's my opinion. Think about it, the 301 redirect from /urldoesnotexist to /urlexists might get added 1 year from now and might be mistakenly removed at some point temporarily. There's going to be an affect in both cases. So in my opinion, the crux is, watch your 404's and redirect them when you and when it makes sense for the user. That way you have a good user experience and you can have the link juice flow where it should. **

All kinds of link tactics work. Atleast to some extent, for sometime. The question is, what you are seeing is it something they are doing ? Or is it something a competition did for negative SEO. Regardless, let's presume they did it at some point. What if they disvowed those links. We may never know.

So all kinds of links, whether comment spam, hidden links, etc etc, work to some extent, but at some point, they get filtered by the algorithm and they get caught or penalized or the value of those links discounted.

I think that makes sense. Serve up the relevant information better then your competition and then test to see how it performs. Have other people, customers look at it and get their feedback. I totally like the idea of an intro followed by a chart and then providing detail information links where needed.
