So, I actually didn't get to the right page. The Forbes Quote of the day is what I thought you were sharing. I will read this over and let you know what I think. Sorry, that was a total blonde moment.

RE: Homepage ranks worse than subpages
The only thing I would recommend here is to add a little more content to the home page. The design is superb and the keyword use is natural. I think with how competitive the word is you might need to use it a little more. Maybe 12 times instead of 8. It appears to be pretty competitive.
Did you run the page through the on page grader? And did you check your links in open site explorer? Run an advanced SERP in the Keyword Analysis tool to compare your metrics with the SERPs on page 1.

RE: Subfolder ranks worse than the rest of the site
The bad links have been disavowed but have any good links been built? Refresh some of those links with good, high quality, relative links. Share some of the pages on social media and add a couple of videos if you can, from Youtube. All of those things should help you.

RE: Is social networking really worth all the effort?
Sure, no problem! Make sure you create a page, not a group. They are different. When you are logged into your personal FB, go to any page and there will be a green button in the top right hand corner of your timeline that says "create a page". You want to do that, not create a group. You will have to be logged into a personal account to create a business page.

RE: Is social networking really worth all the effort?
If you ever have any questions feel free to pm here. I don't mind helping out! I truly love social marketing. I like the data, and to be able to see the results too. I think for awhile this was really one of the most effective ways to build domain authority.
Glad I could help, good luck to you!

RE: Is social networking really worth all the effort?
I like FB better because I am long winded and the 140 character limit on Twitter annoys me. lol
My largest demographic on Facebook is women 30-45, stay at home moms (I can tell because my insights say that they most common hour people visit the page is between 11 and 3, which is nap time in most houses) with large interests in recent events, funny posts and cute pictures. I try to throw some stuff in about generators because I want to have some relevancy, so I put the promotions up. In case the power goes out one day, Mrs tells Mr they should buy a generator from the company who posts the pictures of cute babies. (yeah right lol) It is more about the exposure and getting our name out there.
I use a ratio to determine my posts: 30% fun, 40% Clickable links to other sites, 30% related articles. Videos have the highest CTR, Pictures get the most engagement and anything that drives a click increases engagement.

RE: Embed video. YouTube or Vimeo ? Whats best for the pagespeed ?
I use YouTube. It is great, as PixelbyPixel said, it is another engine giving you exposure. Not to mention it has a DA of 100 which is a very credible linking source. And it is owned by Google, so my guess is, the engine prefers it as well.

RE: How can I avoid duplicate content when building a review widget?
I think you should use a review aggregator like YotPo. These will deliver reviews to your contractor's sites without duplicating the content because the content won't be in the source code. Any plug in you can design will prevent duplicate content. You will basically display the content without it being in the code. The only HTML the robot will see is the coding for the review system.

RE: Is this PPC claim true?
Since these are branded terms, I would recommend that you do a simple search on Google to see if your competitors are already paying for your branded term. Not all of them do, especially if your branded term is irrelevant to your products.
More likely than not, if you are ranking 1 organically and not paying for your branded term in PPC you will still get upwards of 90% of the clicks. Most people searching by brand already know what they are looking for and where they want to buy it. They will look for your SERP. If you want to test the theory, turn off the paid campaign for a week and see if the traffic on branded terms increases organically or if you see a huge decline in traffic. AdWords is easy to Beta. Maybe it isn't cutting spend altogether, but dropping your bid to position three. Having two listings next to each other is the holy grail of SERP positioning.

RE: Consolidating two separate domains and redirecting towards a new replatformed domain
I would create a new webmaster property instead of trying to change the address of two sites. Are you setting the new site up as HTTPS? What are you doing with the old domains? I would make sure you keep the registration active on them so that no one else can buy them.
Aside from refreshing content and HTML data, creating a new Webmaster property, monitoring performance and verifying that the dynamic 301s are working I can't think of anything else really.

RE: Consolidating two separate domains and redirecting towards a new replatformed domain
I have never done this with Magento. I like BigCommerce for this kind of thing.
That being said, I always look at how my content performs after the migration. I'm usually writing new content when I consolidate because I want a completely new site. I don't think you will see better keyword performance without writing some original content.
I look for an increase in bounce rate and a decrease in pages per visit. If the structure in the new site is going to be drastically different you might lose some of your current market. Audiences like some structural consistency.
I watch for messages in GWT for an increase in 404 errors or a suspicious increase in links to the site. If the migration is not done properly you can inadvertently create thousands of backlinks.

RE: 2 accounts or one
Your blog would be just a page on your site. I think with WordPress you don't have to necessarily install the blog on a subdomain, which is what you did originally. I would follow the instructions in the backend of your site on how to run the WordPress blog as a page on your domain instead of as a subdomain. Or, just create a blog page without using WordPress.

RE: 2 accounts or one
I have never heard of an addon domain, so I am assuming they are the same.

RE: Do these items affect Google ranking or Quality Score?
The HTML data you are referring to is extremely important. This is first level SEO. Your HTML is the first part of on page optimization. That is where you highlight the keyword your page is about. If there are duplicate meta tags and descriptions you will have a really hard time ranking for any key terms in your content.

RE: 2 accounts or one
If you already have the subdomain created, redirect it to the main domain/blog

RE: Rankings drop - we've added user reviews, are they causing over optimisation on page?
"may not' be indexed is the key term there. More likely than not, it is being indexed.
-
RE: Rankings drop - we've added user reviews, are they causing over optimisation on page?
That isn't true in this case because the reviews themselves are clearly seen in the source code. It can be fully crawled by robots, therefore it is being indexed.

RE: Rankings drop - we've added user reviews, are they causing over optimisation on page?
Keep in mind that there was holiday week in there too. The trend usually includes a decrease in search traffic the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other major holidays. If you get a large amount of traffic from the US the change in your rankings could just be due to the decrease in traffic and Google shaking the rankings up a little bit because of the change. Your CTR might have been lower because of the position change, but if your SERPs were still getting clicks at position 20, then you should see your results pop back up. Those clicks tell Google that your SERP is relevant to the searcher and could cause them to go back up.
I say add the day, city and state of where the reviews came from. That is very important.
Since this is related to content and not to any nefarious link building, I would look at the Panda updates and not Penguin. If you really think it could be Penguin then check your GWT account for any jumps in links or messages from the spam team.
It isn't uncommon after you make a change to see your results go backwards. I think that if after this week and possibly next week you don't see any progress, you should remove the reviews, wait a couple of weeks and see what happens. If your rankings go back up, then the problem is the reviews. If not, there is something else going on.
