Hi Carlos,

I think part of this has to do with the breadcrumb functionality you have built into your site.

So for instance, /Mens_Wetsuits-598/ has a ton of inlinks. Part of this is because your top navigation is linking to /Men_Wetsuits-598/ on every page on your site, then your breadcrumb functionality is linking to /Mens_Wetsuits-598/ on each of your 252 men's wetsuit products.

If you want a further look at internal linking structure, I would recommend Screaming Frog SEO Spider. It will scan your entire site and can show you all internal in-links and out-links for each page on your site.

I hope this gives you some insight as to what is happening. It is not of course a comprehensive explanation, but you can see how something as small as a breadcrumb can easily inflate the number of internal links.

Hi Darin,

If they appear to be working properly in the Rich Snippets tool in Webmaster Tools, it sounds like you have them set up correctly.

Google only displays rich snippets when they feel it is applicable to the particular search being done, "While we don't guarantee that we will always use this information [rich snippets], we will check your site for marked-up content when we crawl it."

I would recommend you read Rich snippets not appearing and make sure that you are following the guidelines listed and if you are, Google may just not find the search you are using relevant.

I am pretty sure the SEOmoz toolbar uses the same metrics as Open Site Explorer, which is only updated a few times per month. In any case, creating a new page means you are starting off with little or no authority PA:1; however, once you include 301 redirects to that page, internal linking structure, and links from external websites, that authority will grow.

As for your other page being at the same Google position as before, that is good; however, that is not always the case. You are correct in stating that a 301 helps transfer the link juice from one page to another, but it is not a 1:1 transfer... which means that in some cases you could lose traction in your current Google position.

All of that being said, it sounds like you have everything set up correctly with your 301 sending link juice and traffic from your old page to your new page. It will take a couple weeks (typically) for SEOmoz to update Open Site Explorer and the SEOmoz toolbar to reflect these changes. Also, it can take some time for Google to rank your new page accordingly, as it must built some trust and authority with Google.

I am guessing that has to do some with your on-page SEO.

Your /prom page has 1 instance of the phrase "prom limo", while san diego prom night limo you are on page 3, because you have "prom night" on your page more than "prom limo".

Hi Cary,

If you Google, "Bachelorette and bachelor parties are among the most memorable events of your wedding. Everyone knows that the last night out with the boys and/or girls can be wild and exciting; don't let your designated driver be left out from all the fun!" - using quotes, your page appears as the only result.

Also, using one page to target both bachelor and bachelorette parties may be difficult. You may need to have a page for both. When I Google San Diego Bachelor Party Limo, I do not see your site on page one; however, when I Google San Diego Bachelorette Party Limo I see your company - I would assume the reasoning behind this is in your title, headings, and text, you use the following order: bachelor and bachelorette party - you are using the keyword "bachelorette party" a lot more than bachelor. Maybe have a page for each, considering the audiences are probably looking for something slightly different.

Also, I would suggest removing your phone number from your title tag. It is using up a lot of space that you could use for additional keywords or just omit it altogether to clean up the title tag. I would definitely list the phone number in your description, but the title is not really helping people - in my opinion.

I would highly suggest using SEOmoz's On-PAge Report Card to evaluate how your individual pages are targeting a specific keyword.

And as Jason and Brad suggest, getting a few extra links to these deeper pages will definitely help you in ranking as well.

According to Yahoo, "...If you need to make a change to your listing in the Directory (this includes changing the URL, title, and/or description of the existing site), you must use the change form, NOT Yahoo! Directory Submit."

You are correct in saying that you would have to divide your link building efforts if you have multiple sites. If you use subdomains, you would get some of the value of linking across all of your sites; however, I don't think that would be good necessarily for your example.

I would suggest that you have landing pages specific to each category of law, then subpages under each landing page that are pertinent to that specific category.

For instance, you could have a Family Law page, which would then have subpages of Divorce, Child Custody, Child Support, Adoption, etc. You could still very well rank well for each of your categories and subcategories.

I would think that your clients would think you were experts in each of your category pages, but I am not too familiar with lawyering

You should attempt to create a listing here: http://listings.local.yahoo.com/overview.php

You may be prompted that you already have a listing; however, I would think you should be able to claim it if you can provide the phone number, address (sometimes they will send you a postcard), or company email address.

And since you are on the "local directory" topic, I would suggest using GetList.org to see where your company is listed and list your company in any of the directories which it is not already listed in.

Yes. You would probably want your homepage to talk about generic plumbing services. Then, depending on the number of locations you have, I would probably link to them on the homepage. Perhaps include a section

Providing pluming services in the following areas:
San Antonio
Dallas
etc.

When a user clicks on one of these links from your homepage, they are brought to a landing page for the city - which would incorporate the city and plumbing in the title, description, content, etc. And then IF you have a physical address for each of these locations, you will want to use GetListed.org and link to each of those locations. Company Name - San Antonio, then link to your companyname.com/san-antonio-plumbers

And like you said, you don't want to be spammy with things. So that is why I would just list the city name and not city+plumbing.

If you wanted to take things a step further, you could do generic national homepage, then a landing page by region or state, then a page for each city you serve. The thing to keep in mind is, that if you are going to take this approach, you really should have physical office locations in each of these areas AND you will need to make sure that you create unique content for each of these landing pages, which can be difficult if the services are the exact same... so you may need to spin things slightly different for each location.

That is the problem... that they are the same site.

That means that Google can index both versions and visitors and other sites can create backlinks to both versions - which is not good, because it splits your backlinks up between two sites instead of one.

You need to set up a 301 redirect from one of the versions to the other, as well as set a preferred version in Google Webmaster Tools.

The hash or "#" is usually just referenced by the browser, not the server, so Google does no care about the use of a "#" at the end of your URL. In fact, you can go to pretty much any page and add "#" at the end and you will get the same page, because it is a browser reference.

Some web designers will also just put "#" as the URL as they are coding, because they do not know the final URL.

If you can pinpoint where this is happening, I would suggest fixing it, even if it is not impacting Google indexing or your SEO... just from a "good house keeping" point of view.

You would use the canonical tag if you wanted to keep both versions in place. If you only want to keep one version, you would 301 redirect, which come to think of it... I don't know if you can do, again because the hash is usually just reference by the browser and not the server.

Here is also a quick quote from John Mu (an engineer at Google), stating, "We generally ignore the "fragments" (as in http://domain.com/path#fragment) when crawling, indexing and ranking since this is generally just something that is handled on the client side."

You have the right idea.

You want to create a landing page that will be targeting San Antonio Plumber or Plumber in San Antonio. This includes title tag, meta description, and content, as well as having internal links using keywords pointing to this new page.

I would also suggest you use GetListed.org to add, where applicable, your business to the specified business directories. This will also help greatly by specifying your physical address in San Antonio (assuming you have one).

As for 404 errors in general, if you receive a 404 error from SEOmoz, that means, "4xx status codes are shown when the client requests a page that cannot be accessed. This is usually the result of a bad or broken link."

Internal 404 errors should be fixed as it is bad for user experience, as well as an inefficient time for crawlers.

Hi Galit,

I just looked over your site and it looks like those /index.html versions of your pages do still exist.

For instance, when you are on

http://www.dogfond.com/behavior-training/dealing-with-dog-aggression

if you go and click on the Dog Fond logo on the bottom left of that page, it will bring you to the /index.html version:

http://www.dogfond.com/behavior-training/dealing-with-dog-aggression/index.html - which is a custom 404.

Hi Lewis,

If you haven't already, you need to verify your subdomain (dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk/) in Google Webmaster Tools. Once verified, you can then request removal of your entire site, which in this case is your subdomain.

You will need to follow Google's Requirements for removing content to help you through the rest of the process.
