As I mentioned before I would recommend concentrating on reading the Moz Guide to SEO then systematically checking and improving your site in accordance with the advice. At that point ask any questions you have on here - this is a brilliant community with lots of clever people so you are sure to get some great help.
Reading the guide should remove this confusion and it might well bring up some more specific questions. At the minute I am snowed under and won't be able to jump on a call, but any specific questions or elements you are struggling with bring them to the community and ask. Try to be a specific as possible and give examples if you can this will allow people to help you. You are welcome to drop me a private message, but as I say there are lots of experienced people on here and getting more than one persons advice and experience is what makes this community invaluable. Hi Anthony - I am assuming that the site design change will basically be a change to the template more than the actual content? I think you need to make sure that you plan this carefully, but in my experience the most important thing is to make sure that the titles and other onpage elements stay the same, so that you are less likely to upset your current rankings. When you redesign the site are you going to keep the same URLs as you currently have or will this change? If this is the case you need to make sure you have mapped all the old URLs to their new corresponding ones using 301 redirects. I would also look at your current onsite menu structure and internal links between pages and make sure that you try to keep this the same. If you plan this carefully and make sure that you keep the current content, but add to it then there shouldn't be a negative effect on your rankings. While the redesign is being done you could actually plan on improvements like you have mentioned more content, you could also make sure you have all the latest Google tracking code for Analytics if you use it. You could also look at all the potential ways in which you could have the new design built to be optimised for site preformance meaning every page loads as quick as possible. Also adding new pages into your structure is another positive step to actually improving your online preformance with this redesign.

I moved one site to https and saw no siginificant ranking boost from this change. I have seen people implement this and cause there site to slow down which has had the opposite effect.
In my opinion another big clue is the fact that sites like Moz and Search Engine Land haven't gone to https 
Redirect the URLs to one version, for a start it will make your site more crawler friendly for search engines so they don't waste time crawling each version of the page fully and also as you mention it will eliminate duplicate content.
Why make Google do extra work? - your site architecture needs to be as clear as possible, so that Google can crawl it efficiently and not have to deal with duplicates..

I personally would start by using the Panguin tool which gives an overlay of your Google Analytics - make sure you set your date back enough to cover the time prior to when you got hit in order to see if you have been hurt by any of the updates. I have been using this tool for several years and would definitely recommend it - I have done in several other Moz Q&As previously.
Samuel Scott's response mentions the post by Alan Bleweiss and he mentions this tool in it.

Justian makes some good suggestions - I would also suggest that you consider SEMRush - http://www.semrush.com/ - I personally find this tool invaluable for competitor research. It is very powerful and can really enlighten you in terms of competitor research in both organic and paid keywords.
Not a tool but you could also get a rough idea by having a quick glance on your competitors sites and see if they are using meta keywords 
Also run your competition through Screaming Frog and pay particular attention to Page Titles - I tend to find you can see what keywords are being targeted like this - they usually standout like a sore thumb

I think your problem is you have google all confused - your site still default loads http://www.makemoneyadultcontent.com/ if you enter it in your browser address bar. When you search in Google it now shows the https version - however you haven't redirected http version to https - links pointing at your site will also be still going to http which has all the links and authority pointing at it to rank but Google isn't recognising this and passing authority for ranking to the new https version it now indexes. Have you checked this article out - you need to get some 301 redirects in place to start. I also noticed your styling isn't working properly on https. Not sure what your site is on but if it's WordPress you can fix that with a plugin usually.

I think you need to be careful with reciprocal linking between websites, however a few links that are pointing at other websites that are an authority within your area is a good thing as it makes your link profile more natural. However this doesn't need to be from a recommended links page on your site - I have always been a bit wary of this practice as I think this sort of page can look unnatural in my opinion - especially when you start getting lots of site that have a similar page and are linking back to you!
In regards to putting a link at some appropriate place on your website - so rather than having a recommended page I might already have some page on my site where it would be appropriate have a link to this site. I have done something like this on several sites that I have worked on and I don't think it has had any impact on the value of the original link. If you start exchanging lots of links with other sites then you could have a problem.
I have content which is dated and several years old but still ranking for relatively competitive terms on the first page top 3 results and have seen increases in the last few months for ranking. I would however be wary of putting a date on content, as you rightly mention, as most people including you and I will do a search for information and if the date is clear in the SERPs and it hasn't been published recently then you don't click on it. In terms of this I would not be as concerned about the SEO but more the user engagement / CTR.

There are lots of things that work for link building Leon - one of the best starting points, I think, is to aim at creating great content and then make sure people see it by building relationships with authorities and social influencers so that you can make them aware of your content - in turn they will help increase the exposure of your content. This method will lead to links and increased ranking.
What you have got to think is great content + exposure = links
whether this content is a blog post, press release or some sort of viral campaign (video or image). People link to great content and want to tell their friends about it - human psychology

I thought that there was a good chance that you had been hit by Panda at some point as your site content was so thin and the little content you have could be even considered over-optimised purely there to rank for a term in the search engines. Every time Google brings out an update there are changes to how it looks at sites and even though you haven't been doing anything to yours it could have triggered a penalty as it matched the relevant criteria of the that specific algorithm update.

In terms of your site and how to fix it I would stick with what I suggested originally and make sure you start building a great information resource for visitors - then more will come! Focus on really beefing up that copy on each of your pages. Also consider employing some form of review system and encourage visitors to review the different places hotels, restaurants, etc. Also make sure that you have submitted your XML sitemap URL to Google Webmaster Tools - plugins such as Yoast SEO will automatically update your sitemap when new content is added.
Remember Googles aim is to serve the most relevant content for a search term whilst also providing the best user experience.

Click on the number of duplicate pages displayed against each page that has duplicate content (under the other urls column) - this shows the urls so if it says www.domain.com has 3 other urls click on the number 3 in that column of the report and it will display them.
Campaign > Crawl Diagnostics > Errors > Duplicate Page Content > Other URLs Column - click the number
Good quality content is always important no matter what you are targeting when it comes to SEO.
Remember -
great content + exposure = links
More links leads to an increase in search engine ranking, but remember when link building always go for quality over quantity (don't lose site of this and go for any spammy low quality link). Links essentially show search engines that people place value on that website or webpage as an information source for browsers, this applies to and is important for any type of business when it comes to search engine ranking. The more decent quality links you have the more weight your site has in the eyes of the search engines!
Max has put forward some good suggestions in relation to a blog and what value can be gained from it for your friend's site.
Remember decent content helps to add value to a website enriching the experience for visitors so I would get working on some if I were you.

Hi Leon - I would say that is where building relationships with social influences/authorities comes in - ways of doing this are by getting involved in discussions and interacting on sites such as twitter. Building this type of relationship takes time and effort but will pay off in the long run. You could also consider setting up a blog of your own and asking established bloggers in your niche to contribute - this may involve incentives for them to participate, but remember when they do they already have a following and are likely to highlight their work to them. In turn this will increase your website exposure which will lead to links.
Remember lots of people are asking to be guest bloggers but you need to think how can I stand out from the crowd to help you get picked. This is where you have to think outside the box and try other routes to get the attention of the person running the quality blog. Also make sure you look on here at the different posts on outreach emails and how others have successfully gone about gaining links, attention for their work, etc.
As Donald says you can rewrite content for each location and give it a location specific flavor.
One thing I would also recommend when working on something like this is spend the time trying to get some user generated content such a reviews and testimonials. This will give it a more unique local feel.
If each location has similar products but not exactly the same could you slightly vary product focus and weight of content accordingly.
I don't know you setup or budget but you could even look to get different writers for different locations. You may even look to get different business owners/franchise managers to have input on the content for their site. In some situations you may even have some keen to write some content that you can proof/edit.

Have you considered looking at what your competition are doing in terms of products in relation to SEO and digital marketing. Many of them will have this all packaged on their websites so you can take a look and get an idea what they are doing and make your own versions...
I am sure you know who you are competing against in your market but if not just Google some location specific terms and have a look at their services, packages, etc.

You have a duplicate content issue that is because of your pages being available on the www. version and none www. version of the page - to correct this I would look at placing a 301 redirect from the none www. to the www. version and this will fix the issue.
