I usually don't submit my content however, some of my visitors will do that.  Some of my articles will get a big spike of visitors from reddit (a few thousand) but the real traffic for me is from slashdot where I have gotten a hundred thousand visitors over two or three days.  Stumbleupon is also a good traffic source for me but instead of delivering a big spike of traffic I get a steady flow of a hundred to a thousand visitors a day. It takes a really special article or image or other type of content to get massive traffic from these sites.  Most of my content gets very little attention however a few times per year we see the slashdot effect.

Congratulations on publishing, and the good response so far. Always a nice way to start a Monday! You might still send something to the radio station. They could hardly complain about you wanting to make their lives easier with some written (email) information that they don't have to create, and you could get in your links that way.

I think that it depends upon the size of your organization and the position where you sit. If you are responsible for a lot of people then you better be planning a lot.... but if you are the widget guy then you don't need to plan as much, your job is to make widgets.

Thank you!  This is exactly the kind of information I needed! I was thinking contacting webmasters who published the original article to tell them about mine.  But now, perhaps what I will do is not just contact them but attach a copy of the pdf for them to use.

I would like to add to this discussion that although you may not see Quality Score on the Display side, it doesn't mean that it is not a factor for Display. However Quality Score on the Display Network is different than QS for Search.

Hi I read this many times on various top blogs and community forums that if you add a plus one button on your website and people are clicking or sharing your content by that plus one button, then it helps a lot in rankings. Now is it because plus one is google's platform so google want to give it a high priority over facebook, twitter, or any other social networking platform? Isnt it a partial behavior from google because its a fact that google plus is not as popular or good as FB or twitter.

My concerns about this are...  1) Can search engines see the content?... and 2) what does moderation involve? Here is what I found on the Facebook site about crawlability... (at this URL) The Facebook comments box is rendered in an iframe on your page, and most search engines will not crawl content within an iframe. However, you can access all the comments left on your site via the graph API as described above. Simply grab the comments from the API and render them in the body of your page behind the comments box. We recommend you cache the results, as pulling the comments from the graph API on each page load could slow down the rendering time of the page. For moderation... I am thinking that this will be another problem. Compared to allowing comments via wordpress this has the ability to send the comments out to a lot of people who use facebook.  Huge upside there. But I still will probably not use it because moderating the comments would pull me away from jobs that I feel are more important and that I would rather do.  .... but that is just my perspective. May work much better for other people.

I wouldn't call it unethical unless you made a habit of it with loads of sites, all providing no value. It's never worth focusing on micro-sites, but if there's a couple there, might as well use them

The directories with clear prices on the home site are not as good, because even if does not result in penalties, much of the SE can identify, and take the relevance of external links. Furthermore, this is a directory PR 3, not so high to run any risk, if greater than or equal to 5, you could think about it. Another aspect is it has many links, which divides the relevance of external links, one less reason to pay for it. Hope this has helped.

I can't remember which conference it was at the moment, but a Googler talked about how if you have too many hashtags they see that as spam and it might not make it into the real time search. I know some people just have fun with the hashtags, but we use them in our tweets for things like #SEO #socialmedia #analytics, etc whenver it makes sense.

If you are relevant in multiple categories I see no harm in trying to get links from all of them, it's quick and easy to submit your site. The category structure in Dmoz isn't perfect so it can be difficult to know which is the most relevant category for your site especially with some being so similar.

I looked at the source code and it redirected to another domain.  The whois for that domain had the same invalid email.  However, I searched that domain and found a "contact us" page.  So, hopefully I've tracked him down!

hahahaha. I agree with you. First Google manipulates results to see if Bing is copying. Soon after this update comes with all the care that is creating its own content sites optimized for the robots and we can not think of duplicate content. hehehehe

I am still using it on all of my sites... getting hundreds of actions per day.  Works great - but I have very few canonical problems.
