We are working on quotes for other companies that don't understand the possible repercussions of upgrading to responsive site, even though their business is already impacted by refusal to use and work with the tools Google supplies to optimize their site. In 2011 Matt Cutts advised that Google does limit on redirect chains - he indicated the Googlebot won't follow more than around 3 or 4. No limit on the total number of single-level 301s. In your specific situation I would redirect both the original and the first replacement to the new replacement so that users and bots can reach the new page in a single redirect hop.

David, If you have Google Adwords running by any chance, Most of our keywords are set to 'phrase match' but then daily i look further into the specific keyword details by ticking all of my keywords within the adgroup and clicking 'Details' and Search Term 'Selected'. If your ad text is relevant then you are looking at the exact search terms that our ads and content is most relevant too, I have tightened up on this by building up my negative keywords list, Also although Google have tightened up on keyword information, Bing certainly have not so we use the keyword data from Bing webmaster tools, their is absolute tons of keyword information from Bing Thomas has a great list of good tools already mentioned, I hope this helps James
