I'm a 'noob' when it comes to adwords and have never really used it before. I'm about to run my first campaign and have a question that I surprisingly cant seem to find the answer for.

If for example my campaign was targeting the keyword 'flowers' and as a result the long tail keywords that went with that keyword would adwords show my advertisement to those searching black flowers or flowers for sale?

A further question is if I limit my area to say my state if it was in the US would the word flowers include flowers statename or statename flowers?.

If google does count and show to the above does it count these when it provides results in the traffic estimator?

If anyone has any good adwords resources I would be extremely appreciative.

Hi All,

Basically I have 3-4 Biggish video autoblogs that I keep tabs on and they pull videos on my niche and are actually decent quality websites they are just autoblogs as they automatically get the youtube videos.

The issue is that I want to advertise my brandnew site on them as I'm selling a service in the same niche. I know that nofollow will not pass rank and should be safe but what is the absolute safest way to put banner advertisements on these sites without being penalised? I'm wanting the advertisements for advertisement purposes not link building.

I'm worried about getting 10k+ links from the same domain x4 and google not only noticing that but linking the fact I own all 5 sites..

Any help would be great.

I seriously doubt I will get a reply to this as I'm guessing no one has experience with it. if you do though then I would appreciate any information either via comment or PM.

Basically, I need to know how I can improve the rankings of job posts within the third party sites. An example would be totaljobs.com, how can I improve the rankings of advertisements that are posted there or is it simply ranked by date and location?.

When I had my eBay business, I did a lot of research on eBay SEO and discovered some important factors for ranking within the eBay website. I'm basically wanting to do the same here on job board websites for job ads posted to them.

Their algorithms won't be as advanced as Google etc so I'm guessing if they do they will be open for higher keyword density levels and that kind of thing..

I've googled it quite a bit and can't find any information at all on it.

Thanks for the replies. I will look at both resources and let you know how it goes. I'm guessing that most optimization and knowledge comes from trial and error?. As far as analytics goes, dotmailer tracks everything from who opens, forwards, reports as spam, doesn't open, how many times opened, links clicked, popular links, email clients used and % / numbers, bounces, unsub requests, social network views and a massive variety of other analytics. It also allows you to view a copy of the email with hotspots showing click through areas and % statistics etc.

In regards to actually learning how to lay the emails out and improve click rates I will read the guides provided.

I'm fairly inexperienced when it comes to email marketing and know that it isn't as simple as firing off an email and hoping for the best. Realistically it involves tracking responses, clicks and overall the conversion of what you are trying to achieve.

My job involves email marketing on a monthly basis and although I'm capable of sending emails I want to be maximize the results and perfect them.

I'm sure that those reading this agree and have looked into perfecting their email marketing campaigns over the years.

Can those with experience point me in the right direction with this?. I'm open to all resources both free and paid including videos, blogs and other various resources.

If you can recommend a book of some sort that would also be appreciated. Personal experience and advice would also be fantastic.

As mentioned, I'm capable of actually sending emails and we use 'dotmailer' as it features analytics. I need to know how I can better my skills and ultimately increase the success of email campaigns.

To be honest, I would be more likely to click a branded domain over the EMD. From what you have said there is numerous EMD domains on the first page meaning it is likely that users will ignore and think of them as spammy. I'm not basing this on any facts so don't quote me on it or anything but I am speaking from my own experience and how I know my friends and family think.

I have about 30 websites in total including a few eCommerce sites that I sell services on (they convert), video autoblogs, niche websites and a variety of other websites.

I'm competent with SEO and have a portfolio for rankings both locally and internationally. I rank locally for multiple keywords, nationally and internationally for low - medium competition niches.

As far as SEO goes, I feel that I am at a stage where I can't learn a great deal more and it is now at a stage where the things I am learning are the kind of things others in SEO learn on a daily basis such as new techniques and questioning existing ones (perfecting them). Don't get me wrong I'm not an SEO expert in comparison to lots of SEOmozers that are SEO professionals are but I am capable of ranking a large majority of websites with all core SEO techniques and can have an in-depth conversation with them.

I also have a few large websites that have 5,000+ pages ranking for lots of keywords in various cities. These bring traffic to my ecommerce websites.

I also have experience with eBay SEO and SEO on a variety of other platforms as well as Social Media and PPC on some platforms.

The college course is extremely simple and covers the basics of social media, as mentioned I'm doing it purely for the paperwork.

I do need to grow my skills though as I lack the commercial experience and I know for a fact that there is a difference between ranking websites in your own time for various niches and ranking them for a corporate company.

I was reading a few SEO articles a while back which actually covered what SEO involves now and as you said it covers a huge variety of things such as general marketing, web development and to a certain extent design.

My view is that the SEO/IM should be capable of managing on their own when it comes to web development. They should be capable of implementing basic features that they need and creating images that are not graphic intensive as well as modifying existing content to suite.

I want to pick a degree that will serve as a backing for my career and the platform for my knowledge. Once I choose a degree I can self teach the other aspects or complete some short courses.

A friend of mine is actually dong a masters degree in computer science and recommended that I do web development as a degree and business as a sub course and then self teach the other things.

Realistically I think that there is only so much you can learn as such when it comes to SEO and Internet Marketing and as previously mentioned no matter how much of an expert you are you continue to learn bits and pieces each day.

Rand is known as a SEO expert but I'm sure he to learns on a daily basis.

Again, thanks for the response I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. I was wary about doing web dev as I don't want to fall into doing web development constantly. I enjoy the variety that Digital Marketing/ Internet Marketing offers as it typically seems to cover bits of everything and does not get boring.

I really had no idea where to place this question as there seemed to be no 'suitable' place. I do though feel that it is a viable question and would appreciate any responses that I receive.

Essentially, I'm currently working full time doing digital marketing covering most general aspects as it is in-house and primarily local venturing to maybe 50-70 miles in the region of the local area. I'm doing SEO, PPC, Social Media etc.

I'm certified in networking (I studied in Australia) and have my UK GCSEs along with a variety of other general certifications e.g. business. The college in the area where I work is offering a NVQ in digital marketing and social media so although I'm self taught I'm currently doing this once a month purely for the paper to recognize that I know what I'm doing.

Anyway, getting to the point. I have the opportunity to pursue a degree long term with my employer. I've always had an interest in actually learning to code in a web development language (I can cope at the moment with PHP and do what I need to do) and I've also had an interest in developing iPhone apps etc.

What degree would you recommend in aiding a career in SEO and Digital/Internet marketing in general?. To me it seems to boil down to either a marketing degree or a web development degree.

Nope. I can't seem to find it but he basically talked about how SEOmoz was originally setup as nonprofit and when they changed they kept the .org and 301d the .com. I've tried searching a variety of keywords related to what I can remember but just can't seem to find it.

Hopefully if Rand sees this he can weigh in on what I'm quoting. He did 100% say it though and why I can't find it is beyond me.

+1 I'm personally extremely anal about WWW to none WWW. I actually asked a question the other day about an issue with /category/randomtext/category name as you could put random text between the category and the category name and it would not properly 301. A few people said that it does 301 but the permalink does not change or redirect. I tried it on a few different sites and they had the same issue but some would 404 or 301 properly.

I ended up removing the sub categories in fear that it could be exploited just like existing at WWW and none WWW can be.

If you Google around or search the SEOmoz site you will find the quote I'm talking about that Rand mentioned about using .org on SEOmoz. The main justification for SEOmoz would be the links that they built up I would imagine.

If you had a legitimate purpose you could try using encoding but I'm not sure how this falls within Googles guidelines you would need to check. From experience with similar issues I've found that anything up to about 60% duplicate will rank.

Agreed. .info does look fairly spammy. Exact match .info looks even more spammy.

I'm far from expert on the subject of .org but my understanding was that you can now use .org for anything and the none profit aspect no longer applies as such.

I don't know if it helps but I recall reading a blog post by Rand a few weeks back and he mentioned the .org of SEOmoz. He stated that .org was originally used due to the fact that SEOmoz was none profit but once they went commercial they kept the .org.

SEOmoz is obviously commercial as products are sold yet .org is used. Based on this fact and the other mass of .org domains being used commercially, it indicates to me that using .org commercially is perfectly fine.

I would personally feel safe using a .org and would recommend it should the .net or .com be taken. In some cases I would actually opt for .org over .net.

Will do. I forgot to mention but I actually found the flaw with the 404 when I was looking at the SEOmoz crawler statistics. It said that my sub categories were duplicate content as the pages it was referring to were assigned to multiple categories.

An example roughly based on my structure that it detected as duplicate content is the posts existing in: /category/seo/no1 and  /category/seo/no2 so as a result it was duplicate content. I deleted the sub categories and assigned them all to just the SEO category and realised that the sub categories were still resolving so to troubleshoot this I decided to add a random prefix to the end e.g. /seo/asdnas and the address still resolved to the root category.

My theory was that if someone generated for example 100 urls and built links that google would see it as 100 duplicate pages due to the fact it was not 404ing or changing url when as you said 301ing.

Thanks for clearing that up for me!. When I was playing with it I was extremely confused as normally 301 actually redirects and shows the new URL.

As a temporary solution I ended up stripping the category base meaning it now 404s or 301s to the correct page if you try any of the things I originally mentioned.

I actually did a fair bit of research on it prior to asking on SEOmoz and could not find anything at all about it. I even asked a couple of web developers I know who use Joomla and Drupal and they could not figure it out either.

You clearly do learn something new every day as I had no idea about this prior to your reply.

My issue is that in wordpress 404 does not seem to be working properly.

An example of this is:

sitename.com/category/catname loads the files in that category but I can also type

sitename.com/category/asdasfaasd/catname and it still goes to the posts in that category and does not 404. I can replace the misc text with anything and it does not 404.

My worry is that this can be used to exploit duplicate content.

I've looked at a couple of other sites and they do the same.

I'm using Yoast as my SEO plugin and  my theme is elogix from themeforest.

I've tried disabling all plugins, cloudflare and changing theme and the same issue exists.

If anyone can help it would be extremely appreciated.
