Hi Amelia, you're right about that alt tags are for people who use screenreaders. Though search engines like google also use the alt tag  to recognize there is an image file.

The alt tag is an onpage factor that influence ranking  (http://moz.com/learn/seo/on-page-factors)

Although the alt tag may looks like as not important, it's worth using it.

About the spammy thing, using a word twice on a page has nothing to do with keywordstuffing

Hi, Google can't read (yet) image filenames, that's why we use the alt tag, to tell google what's the image is about. So you can use the image file name as alt tag, no problem. If you use the word "lego" twice it's not keyword stuffing.

Hi, I made a keyword research last month for a large retailer i took the following staps: First of all i made 3 keyword lists:
1. top 100 high volume (adwords keyplanner like Moosa said)
2. top 100 best ranking (MOZ and WMT)
3. top 100 last month used (Google analytics and WMT)

For the final keyword list i took the overlaps on the lists. and the keywords with brings traffic and revenue to the site. I have 60 keywords now  and optimizing the landingpages for it.

Hi,  You can make  redirects (301) in your .htaccess file on the server like this:

Redirect 301 /oud/oud.html http://www.jouwsite.nl/nieuw.html

if you still have the old files on the server you can delete them.

Hi, it's a challenge right now  we have more than 5000 productpages. Most of them have unique content, made by a content copywriter.

My duplicates are not productpages, but listerpages, what make sense, though the products are different, the structure of those pages are pretty similar. To add content to those pages i'hope to make a difference.

Hi, to be sure your dev site is not indexed put it behind a login / password. As google can't login to your site, google can't index it.

In WP you did the right thing, when you put your site live make sure you use a seo plugin (Yoast) and use canonical tag, to avoid duplicate content. https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/

What i'm going to do is add different content. We are going to implement a tool where i can easily add fresh content on each page.  I hope this will make the difference otherwise canonical is a the second option.

Hi, it looks like you have a Wordpress website and also the use of H1. For example on page: http://www.iamtheconnoisseur.com/casual-connoisseur-x-trickett-the-weir-collaboration-gift-set/ you have H1 at Casual Connoisseur x TRiCKETT ( you can see it in the source code).

Also start using the meta description in the head, it's not a big SEO thing but at least your snippets in Google will get it's info from it and good snippets are good for clicks.

Get backlinks to your site. Without backlinks no authority on your domain. in OSE i don't see any backlink, it's worth trying to get some..

Hi Sam, What you can do is look for the keyword in Webmastertools click on it and you'lll get some information about data position in serps and ctr.

I have to say that data from Webmastertools is not the most reliable one, but it gives you an indication.

When you look for the keyword in Google Analytics, you can see the avarage position, clicks and performance. This gives you insight how well a keyword works on it's avarage position.

Than you can run a full serp report in MOZ, not sure this gives you the information you're looking for, but it's worth trying, and put next to the options i described.

Hi, yes i'm using a canonical with the trailing slash, so that shouldn't be the problem, though  maybe  my impatience is. I see other retailers in my niche have it already working

i have configured in webmastertools - parameters to disable the parameter: search? does that something to do with it you think?

Splitting a sitemap can be useful for you to keep sight over the indexed url's.  But it's quit normal to run a sitemap with 5000 url's. the maximum is 50.000 url's for 1 sitemap, so it's not necessary.

Hi, Are you using a CMS? It can be caused by that? It creates url's with spaces that's why they look so strange. Have you checked this with your webdeveloper?

Here some info about url encoding:

URLs can only be sent over the Internet using the ASCII character-set. Since URLs often contain characters outside the ASCII set, the URL has to be converted into a valid ASCII format. URL encoding replaces unsafe ASCII characters with a "%" followed by two hexadecimal digits. URLs cannot contain spaces. URL encoding normally replaces a space with a plus (+) sign or with %20.

Hi, Thanx for your reply, i'm not sure i understand you by "please note you are disallowing more than just media"

the thing with this is the xml file is an old file but somewhere in the google archive. i tried do remove it with the wmt, but returns. It's  not on the server anymore. the directory "media" doesn't exist anymore, also from an old website.

Because the file still returns in wmt i thought let's try it with the robots.txt

new robots.txt not tested waiting for deployment

Oh call me stupid, but how do i make a 410?
