To disavow or not?!
Hi Ted, If you have dodgy links seen from GWT which you suspect as part of a blog network, you might as well further investigate it using other tools like OSE, MajesticSEO, Ahrefs or LRT in order to assure you that only 2 dodgy links are pointing to you. GWT in most cases won't tell you the complete picture of your link profile. Of course, 2 dodgy links won't hurt you but it won't hurt you either to use the Disavow Tool when you see incoming spammy links en masse. Being proactive using it is fine IMHO. Why? I would not want to be hit first and lose revenue along the way. By experience, bringing back a site from penalty takes time. Dropped traffic over a period of time is tantamount to revenue loss.

301 rediects - weird characters
So was it escaping the special characters that did the trick, Ted?

Wordpress, Redirects and HTacess file
Hi Takeshi, I only need to get 2 redirects working, so I thought a plug in was a bit overkill. They are already present in the htaccess file from the previous site (I'm running wordpress from a sub-folder but switched everything over as per the wordpress instructions. Got the following which doesn't seem to work (any ideas what is wrong?) RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.co.uk$ [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.example.co.uk$ RewriteRule ^/?$ "http://www.newsite.co.uk" [R=301,L] The above should redirect from example.co.uk OR www.example.co.uk to www.newsite.co.uk and the is that is giving me a few problems is RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^newsite.co.uk$ [OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.newsite.co.uk$ RewriteRule ^oldpage.htm$ "http://www.newsite.co.uk/new-page.htm" [R=301,L] That should redirect from newsite.co.uk/oldpage.htm to newsite.co.uk/new-page.htm All these are already existing redirects done previously through my htaccess file but not too sure if the coding is correct for a wordpress based site but the last one above does not seem to be working at all! Any ideas would be great and a big help! Cheers Ted

Static site to wordpress - avoiding 301 redirects
Yep, my bad. Pages seem to function under their own permalink rules (not sure why, I think most people would prefer the same permalink structure for posts and pages.) Did some quick research and looks like many others have the same issue and the only solution is to try out the available plugins. You can change the .htaccess code to append .htm to the url but WP won't be able to locate the proper post unless you change the settings in the db as well (which is what I assume the plugins do).

Using a lightbox - possible duplicate content issues
I agree with donford. I've never heard of duplicate images being flagged as duplicate content. What is more, almost everyone sets up their galleries in this manner, so you really don't have anything to worry about.

Breadcrumbs structure
Will this not de-prioritise the page that Jon wants to rank though, as it is 3 clicks off the root in the breadcrumb rather than directly off the root? Thanks James

Call to actions buttons
In order to be compliant with HTML standards, all images should include alt text. This helps with users who are visually impaired. Also, it is good SEO practice.

Left or right hand navigation
If it's a Portfolio of your Works - use the Left hand Navigation Menu ! Very Attractive. The Clients will be amazed by the work you did there and published ! If you have a blog or magazine webdesign go with the right hand side ! - as Takeshi said

Title tags for deep pages
You want to put your most important keyword at the front of the tag. Most important to least important and under 70 characters (including spaces). Each Title tag has to be unique. Since you already have a page about the Cheeses of the world The Cheshire Cheese page should begin with the keyword Cheshire Cheese. Also, since you already have a page called Cheeses of the world you could try using a completely different keyword that's similar to the keyphrases Cheeses of the world. Try and catch rankings for similar key phrases. Cheshire Cheese, Find Cheese from around the world. Brand I'd also recommend to not use | (Pipes) As Google see's those as stops. Its better to have a flowy sentence title tag. One last thing.. I LOVE cheese too!

Migrating a site to Wordpress
Cheers Dan, Once it's live I will be double, triple, quadruple checking everything! Paranoid I will miss something or do something wrong! Planning on doing it when I've a lot of time to spare just to be on safe side in case things go wrong! I shall give the plugin a go as well I think. Thanks Ted

Sort of lost my way - Links, SEO
Yes scraper sites are common and again devalued by Google. But, you are judged by the company you keep. So cleaning up an ugly link profile is important.
