Silver necklaces...then create content pages opt'ing for other versions of the keyword set.
Will thanks I was trying to give you the "good answer" tag but I guess i can only use three.
Can you name examples of "sadly, often it was the company itself"...just kidding.
Facebook....although everybody is putting a link to their facebook page from their homepage which is is giving juice to FB...unless you really have lots of engaged fans 1000+
Use a service like Wistia and create an xml video site map. Do a search for "recycle paint" my video for shearer painting result is for the website URL.
Good answer Syed..I wonder when Google will actually make good on their intention to devalue exact match domains. We have seen this happen in mid-to weak keyword sets.
Hello Mozcommunity,
I would like opinions regarding potential spammy inbound links from others .
In theory you would want excellent useful content on your site that other web properties would link to in a natural way..link bait.
But what if links were pointing to your site with malicious intent. For example a competitor bombs yours site with spammy/black hat links.
This is clearly a dilemma for search engines since anyone can link to your site...even though you can block incoming with .access I don't believe many smaller in-house seo teams (or do it yourself small business owners) use Google analytics to routinely monitor referring sources.
Himansu is right just block from via .htaccess file
This brings us a bigger issue not often discussed. Since anyone can link or redirect to your site, this creates a dilemma for search engines.
For example lets say I buy a porn site and decide to create links from that porn site to Portlandhaircuts.com, with malicious intention for that site.
If the blog is clearly on-topic with the main domain; it would help the domain authority.
for my house painting website our blog resides in a subfolder and it has really helped our organic rankings in the last 6 months. A blog is a good method to get new content up and running.
IMHO...it is not a penalty that you are ranked lower #7 for Chicago (or any other non locale)..it is that you are more competitive in your own market to be ranked #2...essentially a boost locally.
If you had a hairdresser site ranked #3 for Austin for "hairdresser", b/c of google local, chamber of commerce link etc that same site might not be top 10 in New York city...it could be with more nyc specific relevance indicators (links, mentions).
I may have answered the wrong question....good luck.
For those two particular websites they have so much content that the stuffed footer although not high on design attractiveness makes the site more usable for humans.
If you see a stuffed footer with a site with less than 100 pages; then it is an SEO tactic...an outdated one at that.
Yes Remarkable Content is the key...hard to do and often hard to even pay someone to do if your niche is technical..and SEO is headed in this direction.
I have had the exact opposite...I rank higher in google than Bing/yahoo... infact i created a dummy site with low quality links seattle-housepainting.com and it ranks in Yahoo and is not on the map for google. I am still trying to make heads and tails of the diff.
activitysuper, I do link building research by finding a strong competitor site: I use opensite explorer with these settings
only followed links
only external links
You will find some pretty good links for free (or for a reasonable $ or effort) and you will also learn about what type of content and persona that site projects.
Good luck.
Great articulate reply Brad..what tools do you use for longtail research? Wordtracker/SEO Samurai?
Rodney...thanks for posting that Seer link...good stuff
Yes on the social signals...now included in opensite explorer.
I discovered what Atticus is suggesting by accident with ADwords. I also use Wordtracker a great tool to discover long tail keyword combinations. Some folks use SEO Samaruai. Good Luck.
