What niche was this in? Single or long tail keywords? Any geographical qualifiers at all? What country level Google did it happen in? UK Google results are all over the place at the moment. Lots of movement at the end of last week and it appears to be going through a refresh again today.

Have you checked google webmaster tools for any error message or issues?

Do you know when the ranking drop happened? If it was Tuesday - Thursday last week it is likely to have been caught in the latest update.

More information would help in terms of working out the issues.

Can you time the drops in traffic and rankings? There are a number of places you can check the dates of the major Google updates. SEOmoz have a cool page here with the dates in by year although nothing yet for 2013

As Brian mentioned if its done to an algorithmic change then clean up your links (anchor key is key) and then wait for the refresh.

If is an unnatural link warning then you need to clean up your links and then ask Google nicely to remove the penalty.

I noticed some changes on Monday and the Google dance seems to have been going on ever since. Some keywords are changing positions by the hour. Agree with Ask Hopper than it will be a few weeks before it settles but it looks like a link based issue.

Hi Gundogs I feel your pain - so for exam related searches you site has declined. Is that in the UK SERPS?

Does appear to be some major swings in the UK SERPS. Lots of rankings changing almost by the hour. Seem some EMD pop up in the top ten. Any ideas whats causing it? What metrics are key?

Thanks - Seb although we haven't recieved any sort of warning in GWT which is odd and it hasn't effected all the keywords.

Anyone else had any sudden drops in rankings this week? Is there an update going on? One of my primary keywords has dropped from 6th to 49th in the google.co.uk search results. Not in webmaster tools to flag an issue.

I have downloaded the links from webmaster and it does look if some content has been scraped and then linked back to us from a large number of sites that we have never sort links from. I have upload the google disavow link tool.

Only one keyword appears to be effected not all of them?

Any ideas?

Its not just for SEO but as non spammy resource within the niche that doesn't currently have one. Not all directories are bad !

I want to build a niche directory based on a one service area and wondered if anyone has any experience of the best out of the box directory software to use?

I would want to have free listings and paid for listing.

The CMS would need to be SEO friendly

Very very odd. I can't see a reason why they are there at all and the mixture of branded and URL links jars on a website such as that?

Funny we did talk today about building our own today as we are fed up with them breaking and not reporting correctly. Just need to find the resource for it now, Thanks

I have used a number of different tools for getting ranking information and have been using Cuterank but it now seems to be report the wrong results.

Any suggestions for the best third party ranking software. It would allow me to check google, yahoo and bing ranks, compare month on month and produce branded PDFs.

Any ideas?
