Redirecting old domains for SEO ranking?
The other commenters sum it up pretty well for me. It can work, in the short term, but it's also a lot more risky than it used to be. The tactic has just gotten abused way too much. The problem is that, if it fails, it tends to fail hard, and your whole investment just crashed and burned. If you're looking to get a quick jump in ranking for the very short-term, then I'll be straight with you - it can still work, in some cases. If you're looking to boost an existing business or build something long-term, then I'd stay away from this tactic. You could burn your entire site.

Roger had some tired fingers last night as he was updating everything. It is for 1:30pm PDT. The website is now updated, too. So sorry for the confusion!

Site Redesign: Potential Problems?
Interesting article. Certainly helps to explain short term dips after a change. I'd venture that Google removes some trust ofter a change and then has their quality reviewers look at it to make sure it's still trustworthy. I think we're going to push the template changes back to the off-season since we can't afford even a small hit for the busy one.

MozRank: Still valid after Panda?
It certainly seems to be part of the picture so far. We've had some canonical problems we were chewing through before this and those that had that fixed seem to be on the rebound. Still, traffic isn't back to where it was but the bleeding stopped.

Duplicating Product Titles in the Page-Content
I seriously doubt you would be penalized, but Google (the algorithm) is going to know you are just duplicating product titles and not give it any weight and ignore it. Why muck up the page for your human customers?

Crawl Budget vs Canonical
agreed! we ran into the same problem with content (articles, etc). if you think of it in the same way as blog posts, they each have a unique URL, but with tags (i.e. categories) you are able to get them posted to the appropriate category landing pages. have a somewhat related issue that i posted here
