Dramatic drop in SEO rankings after recovering from hacking
OK, so if your homepage is completely deindexed, then there has to be a technical issue or a manual penalty. I'd say that a technical issue is much more likely. To look for a manual penalty, go to Google Search Console --> Search Traffic --> Manual Actions. If there is nothing there, then I'm happy to take a quick look if you want to PM me the url or better yet, send me an email at marie at marie haynes dot com.

Hacked website - Dealing with 301 redirects and a large .htaccess file
This is the correct answer. To expand on this slightly, just make sure none of the 404s are internal (ie there are no links on your site pointing to one of these dodgy pages as a result of the hack) and you're all good. Remove the entries from your htaccess file to avoid having to parse them constantly and let any external links to dodgy pages 404. This sort of circumstance is exactly what 404s are made for! The only site at risk of a ranking drop from these 404s is the one pointing to those dodgy pages - who cares about your hackers' rankings?

Google Webmaster tools -Fixing over 20,000+ crawl errors
You can use Screaming Frog to pinpoint where your 404s are coming from. Here's a great write-up with a few different ways to use SF for this: https://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/broken-link-checker/ Another option is Google Analytics. First, navigate to your All Pages report, then set primary dimension to Page Title. Next, go to your site and trigger a 404, take note of the page title, it should be something like 'Page Not Found'. Whatever that page title is on your 404 page, enter that in the inline filtering and it'll narrow the reporting down to just 404 pages. Then drill down into that result and see a full list of URLs that are throwing a 404. Set the secondary dimension to Previous Page Path to see the page that linked to the broken page. Hope that's helpful!

Google Business listing algorithm when listing the top 3 locations in Google Search
It has been my experience that the distance between a business location and the search location depends on the amount of competition for that product/service. If there were 10 competitors in the zip code where someone is searching, you are not likely to see results in the top 3 from outside of that area. But if there aren't many options in or near that zip code, you'll see results from further away. Another factor that seems to influence where results are displayed is the location of people who review the listing. If a listing has many reviews from a given town, it seems that Google is more likely to display that listing to others in that town. And, since you have reviews on both of your listings, but your competitors do not seem to have any, your ranking is being bumped up as a result. Good job on the reviews! Hope this helps, Ira

Google business and SEO for a product not necessarily multiple business locations
If it's a national business appealing to a national audience, then I would consider NOT setting up Google My Business listings. I have seen a national business set up their local business listing (Google My Business) and they ended up losing a ton of traffic overnight. Their mobile traffic, which was coming from various cities in the US, was good. When they set up a Google My Business listing, Google started only sending mobile traffic from 500 miles within the business location. If you're a national business, then you shouldn't necessarily set up a local presence.

Mozscape API - Keyword Rankings?
Hello Ian-- It's been a few years since this post, I'm curious for updates! Does the Mozscape API include search volume yet? Are there plans to? I've been struggling to write a scraper that would do this for me, an API would certainly simplify things.

Yellow Pages advertising and ad sources
Hello! While I haven't had any direct experience with a YP ad I would have to agree with your concerns when faced with such a high impression promise and vague supply source information. I would suggest trying to work with the YP representative to learn more about what sort of analytic data you would receive on the YP side. From what you've mentioned it sounds like you are more interested in only receiving local traffic. If this is the case and you're curious about seeing what YP can offer you might want to try out their local search ads which is much less expensive at around $60/month. Sorry I couldn't offer more information, I hope this is helpful!

Multiple locations for business displaying in search
My pleasure, and I hope it was helpful. Regarding developing separate landing pages, that's a decision you'll need to make, of course, but as you've raised a concern about Google not properly showing both locations, what I'm explaining to you is something that could possibly help with this. It's totally fine that the cities are close to one another. That's common for many businesses. But if you want each office you have to be treated as separate and equal, unique landing pages and unique citation sets will be the common best practice advice you'll see for this scenario.

Website rankings, OSE and Backlinks
Okay so you gave me a long winded answer about how OSE doesn't crawl all the backlinks and I should use other link analysis tools, some of which are paid when I choose to go with Moz because of your reporting system and it's tools you guys provide... So there is a possibility my competitor Excel Driving could have a decent linking profile. I'm still baffled how this site which is a pagerank 0 compared to my pagerank 2 site is still doing better with no onpage optimization and just 1 3 star google review. Can you explain how their Google Business listing is ranking better than mine in the search as well?

Linking from Subfolders
Not sure exactly what you're asking, but there is no problem with pages with pages in subfolders linking to pages in different subfolders or that are in a higher level of the hierarchy. Site architecture can get complicated, but in general: Create a clear hierarchy of pages Link to your top level categories from your navigation Make sure to link to all the pages of your site from somewhere else on the site Always include a link back to the homepage Again, these are just general rules, but should be a good starting point for most sites.

Massive drop off in my google rank. Why?
As Malcolm said, it's most likely the recent Mozscape update that came out Friday evening. That index was about half the size of the previous index, so a lot of your links could not be showing.

Keyword confusion
I don't understand why you insist on cramming SEO and Kingston in the title of every single page you make. It isn't necessary. I would suggest stepping back from SEO mode and going into functional mode. Ask yourself what would really make your site the best site for information on SEO and SEO services in Kingston. Build that site. Forget about Google and keywords. Build a variety of pages related to SEO, but not necessarily about SEO. You can break it up with information useful to readers like how to optimize a landing page, what UX converts buyers, etc. And for Pete's sake, don't put SEO and Kingston in EVERY title or on every page. Get as much information as you can and make each page informative and useful. Don't focus on SEO at all - just build the site for people. When you're done with this and you have a functional and informational site that people like to use, you can then go back and edit it for SEO. It looks like you're obsessed with rankings and keywords. This is going to get in the way of your overall goal - ranking for your keywords. That's the best advice I have for you. Good luck!
